Haven't watched this yet, but the thing about La La Land is it's just not that good unless you liked Moulin Rouge, Chicago, Hamilton, basically if you're a musical/broadway geek who doesn't really care if the songs are all that great. Or if you want a probably-hummer in the Wal Mart parking lot on the way back to the car.

"you'll probably get a blowjob" is all the motivation I need to go see a movie.

Mr. Purple Cat Esq. - 2017-01-23

Just go see that film that implants subliminal blowjob messages into all its viewers 'Hacksaw Ridge'

The Bye Bye Man looks like one of those really shitty direct-to-video no-budget horror flicks that was somehow given a theatrical-release makeover before being unleashed upon moviegoers.

See, "Fuck You, It's January."

Caminante Nocturno - 2017-01-23

The Bye Bye Man is one of the stupidest movie titles I've ever heard.

Binro the Heretic - 2017-01-23

I'm thinking the movie was deep into production before the studio realized Slenderman isn't technically public domain.

You mean because it started on SA (according to Wikipedia that is)? I could be wrong (I don't really follow any of this shit) but I thought Slender Man was something that existed in one form or another, maybe not under that moniker, since the '90s.. maybe it was just a zeitgeisty thing though since I recall both Marilyn Manson's 'Beautiful People' and Reznor/Bowie's 'Heart's Filthy Lesson' videos respectively featured very tall faceless men who projected only silhouettes..

What's weird is, again according to Wikipedia, it has made its way into TV shows and such, like Grimm and Supernatural, and even MLP:FiM. What's also weird is that I'd probably actually GO to a Slenderman movie, just because.. I dunno.. internet stuff.. maybe some names or websites I recognize as neutral these days make an appearance.. but I could give 2 fucks and an Otter Pop about Bye Bye Man, if only about 20.1 million dollars' worth of moviegoers shared my opinion..

Caminante Nocturno - 2017-01-23

I don't know if it would be possible to do a good Slenderman movie. I think, maybe, it would have been possible 30-odd years ago, but I don't know about today.

There's plenty that sort of went with the internets as the catalyst (I think Lain was the first example but more recently some dreadful ones like Unfriended, Smiley) just like Cloverfield/Blair Witch with "Found Footage", Ringu with VHS and even Freddy DreamWarriors with vidya games before it. And HBO's premiering that Slenderman Documentary as I speak.

I dunno, of all the dumb internet stuff I can say "I knew that/them when.." it's by far the most lucrative, except, well for whatever became of those OldManMurray guys and I think one of the original 4CHAN LOLCATs.

On the plus side, despite the ten-minute opening scene which could have been cut I did enjoy La La Land. I mean, the world doesn't really need another story about an aspiring actress trying to make it in Hollywood unless it has something different to say. And Ryan Gosling and Emma Stone are attractive and charming but neither can really sing or dance all that well. I'm not saying they're terrible but compared to stars of musicals past, well they're nto bad but they're "OK".

The musical is one of those sub-genres that film buffs love but studios don't make much of - so when one comes along there is a tendency to praise the ones that do get made or not the praise is fully warranted.

La La Land is more likeable than most of these because it's inspired by the breezy movie musicals of the 1940s and 1950s rather than feature length music videos of "jukebox" musicals and the grotesquely overblown spectacles typical of modern Broadway. And there is some true poignancy to the third act.

This seems like a more informed and level-headed review than I just got from 40mins of HitB, but I'm also okay with that.
