This is a better-made film than people are likely to give it credit for, but look at what it does well. It establishes the principal characters early on -- Buzz as an impulsive violent jerk always after the next score, Michelle as honest but just naive enough to be other people's pawn, Critter as a guy who builds his life around avoiding responsibility -- and the story progresses naturally from there as all three follow their inclinations in greasy 60s Los Angeles. A lot of major motion pictures these days couldn't pull that off.

Five stars despite the lack of a teleportation scene.

Absolutely spot on.

This movie is vastly overqualified Oscar Bait by modern standards.

A man afraid of death who accepts being lonely and powerless because of it dealing with people who are way more afraid of loneliness and powerlessness than death is beyond everyone's capacity now as filmmakers or writers. Maybe if you CG'd Tom Hanks into it three times *shudder* and had Ron Howard direct it, it might reach 18% of this movie's effortless human condition.

The hominid species that made this movie is long extinct, replaced by personality gimmicks and baby mush quality world building. Movies only offer complete delusion and derangement of reality as escape now, there is nothing that runs perilously close to one's own life anywhere on a screen.

Oh yeah, and in this movie the writers know more than the characters, so you can watch them behave in ways they themselves fail to always understand.

Abstraction! *head explodes, too much art, need Iron Man and Quentin Tarantino to chew it for me with the scenes*

Yeah I couldn't figure out the dune buggy scene either.

Forgive me, I had trouble parsing that once sentence of yours, so I thought I'd punctuate and annotate it to make it clearer for the next person (who is probably brighter than me but maybe not):

A man afraid of death (Critter), who accepts being lonely and powerless, because of it dealing with people who are way more afraid of loneliness and powerlessness than death (Michelle and Buzz respectively), is beyond everyone's capacity now as filmmakers or writers.

It's a really good sentence.

This year is a real orgy of the dead schlock directors. :(
