I've been following this in the news, absolutely horrific stuff.

If you want the incarceration situation in Australia fleshed out a little, I would recommend these podcasts.

WTF Australia. Almost everybody I've met from Australia has been incredibly cool, and yet I keep hearing stories of incredible barbarities from that land.

Australia is mystifying.

Like America, AUS is plagued by a loud, awful minority of redneck shitheads who bring an awful lot of racism and general shittiness to the country.

There is plenty of abhorrent treatment of societies most vulnerable to go around, I'm afraid. This story of the Australians governments treatment of political prisoner "s99" from earlier this year actually got me off my backside and pounding the streets for the greens this election.

So what *is* the deal with Australia? Does racism and/or brutality kinda permeate your entire culture? Or is your culture highly polarized, and the good, kind people are the ones who travel (and meet for'ners like me), while the brutal rednecks are the ones who stay at home and do things like set up internment camps for refugees?

Sorry I mean "processing camps for refugees".

No wait... I had it right the first time.

Anaxagoras: A little from column A, a little from column B. The Northern Territory is a bit of a...special case, as well.

The tail end of comet racism is long, both for the victims and the perpetrators.

The right for all indigenous Australians to vote and be counted as human in the census was granted via referendum in 1967.

The legal end of the White Australia policy was in 1973.

Gay fucking in Australia was no longer a criminal act in 1997.

In 2010–2012, the estimated life expectancy at birth for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander males was 69.1 years, and 73.7 years for females. This was 10.6 and 9.5 years lower than the life expectancy of non-Indigenous males and females respectively.

The mortality rate for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander children aged 0–4 years is 1.9 times the non-Indigenous rate.

In Western Australia's Fitzroy Valley community, 12% of babies are born with fetal alcohol syndrome.

We are heading in the right direction, but for those than slip through the cracks or fall into the clutches of governmental care that is a cold comfort.
