What does anyone see in these?

Giant kung fu robots.

And a humanity that cannot to save its ass fathom a form of government not straight out of the paleolithic vs. the neolithic. The robots are necessary to make it believable.

I love it for the shamelessness of its serious-cheese.

It's basically the Japanese Star Wars, with more of an emphasis on the "war" part and all that implies. The different Gundam shows are basically big dramatic space operas with a interplanetary war as the prime mover of the story. A lot of characters die and there's usually enough complexity that neither side can really claim to be the good guys. Very often the conflict reflects the geopolitical situation at the time of production.

However all these shows are inferior to the one where they refused to take anything seriously and the "war" is a karate robot tournament between ridiculous national stereotypes, where one of the entrants is a horse piloting a robot shaped like a horse.

He's not a furry or anything, he's just a horse who they trained up real good.

This is worth a look if you want to see where this whole Gundam thing started; technically it began with the TV series, but that's even more tedious.

For a Gundam series that holds up well and gets the point across succinctly, try Gundam 0080.

Or just go for the above-mentioned G Gundam and watch a dragon-robot fight the pride and joy of Neo-Denmark: Mermaid Gundam.

I'll give this a 5 since I'm an old weaboo and want to show support for these sorts of things but I struggle with how slow and plodding this is. It's a challenge since the movies are summaries of what went on in the normal t.v. show in its first run but that doesn't make it any easier to sit through. I do like the parts when the robots blow each others faces off and cut each other apart with faux giant lightsabers.
