Yep

DOOM review they did recently; provided as a counterpoint:

Please note, I haven't played either of these games, and thus, have no horse in this race. Feel free to discuss, however!

Doom is so fucking overrated it's mindblowing. It's a pretty good shooter and definitely the kind of insta-action FPS that's been lacking in games lately, but the whole "it's the second coming of Jesus Christ" review barrage is ridiculous.
For all it's nods to classic pure-action shooters, the awful, shoe-horned in RPG mechanic is lazy as fuck, the level design in some places is just as awful and obtuse as some of the levels in the original Doom (but this is OK because..uh..nostalgia I guess. Gee and here I thought dumb shit like keycard puzzles being bred out of shooter was a progressive thing), and it takes so many opportunities to nod the original and/or pat itself on its back, they might has well have made a circle jerk mini-game out of it.

The Rise of the Triad remake was every bit as much of a direct nod to the FPS games of old and was mechanically a much better game (very little was changed from the original) and it was basically completely ignored.

Gotta agree with Stanley. Doom was fine, but I honestly can't believe the praise it's getting. I had some fun with it, but eventually found it crazy monotonous. Glory kills became super annoying. I had no real desire to even finish it.

Uncharted 4 is a very pretty game. But as a playable game, I don't even think it's the best in the series. They're a pale imitation of the newer Tomb Raider games anyway.

StanleyPain - 2016-06-21

Oh god, I actually forgot about the glory kills.
You know...good game design 101: If you have a resource in your game that is near-useless (or totally useless) because some other game mechanic renders it so, then either get rid of the resource or the mechanic. In the case of Doom, why the fuck is there still ammo for weapons when the ammo is infinite so long as there are enemies to glory kill?

cognitivedissonance - 2016-06-20

One time I made the mistake of spending a weekend with my dad and he spent the whole weekend forcing me to play Uncharted 2 with him in an unpleasantly chummy manner.

badideasinaction - 2016-06-20

Yeah, that was our group's reaction to the game as a whole. Cutscenes where there should be action and actions where there should be cutscenes.

memedumpster - 2016-06-20

The cutscenes make McBain look like a coherent narrative.

boner - 2016-06-20

These guys know boring games. They sat and completed all of Police Quest 1 and 2 on their channel.

Gmork - 2016-06-20

Soooo they basically made it Prince of Persia.

Nominal - 2016-06-20

Seems like for at least the past 5 years, any game lauded for its narrative has been dull to dogshit. Braid, Gone Home, Uncharted, The Last of Us, Her Story.

Sanest Man Alive - 2016-06-20

As Rich commented in another recent review (The Order 1886? Or was it Quantum Break? Fuckin' 3PSes all start to mush together), you can get away with having dull-ass gameplay if you also have a strong narrative to make up for it. Said games did not have one.

Anyone else play Shadowrun: Dragonfall? It was a great RPG with a plot that was up there with Planescape Torment. I actually ended up liking it better than the Fallouts back in the day.

Nominal - 2016-06-21

Oh yeah, and fuck Bioshock Infinite. Fuck that game sooooo hard.

Mainstream game sites may give GotY to derivative Call of Duty clones, but I'd rather play that than the ART circle jerks that indie sites giz over.

Sanest Man Alive - 2016-06-22

Dragonfall was awesome. Liked the story, loved the supporting crew. And the combat wasn't even as terrible as Planescape Torment!

dairyqueenlatifah - 2016-06-20

Are we really posting LP bullshit here now?

Gmork - 2016-06-21

It's tangentially related to RLM, you rated it wrong.

EvilHomer - 2016-06-21

It's a gaming review channel run by RLM/ Plinkett the Stroke Guy's friends. They do quite a lot of LPs, but their LPs are usually really fun, and this particular video isn't actually an LP - it's a condescended highlight reel/ mini-review of Uncharted 4, with some insightful commentary on modern game design.

If you don't like this video you don't like this video, but please don't write it off before you give it a chance. You might enjoy it!

StanleyPain - 2016-06-21

LPs are fine when the people playing are at least midly funny and just being themselves instead of all the fakey-character bullshit like PewDieFuck and RoosterTeeth and all that screamy hipster garbage.

Quad9Damage - 2016-06-21

I love Rich's increasingly tortured face.

Can you actually die in this game?

spikestoyiu - 2016-06-21

Yes, from shitty jumps

FABIO - 2016-06-21

Yes, from boredom.

Aress - 2016-06-22

Check out their reaction to the Death Stranding trailer in their E3 video.
