I never had the big problem with this song that most everyone I know does. The video's pretty bad but I'd take it over the decade and a half of fake B.B. King solos Clapton had been doing up t that point. It's the kind of track that stands out as slightly better than its peers when it comes on in the dentist's waiting room, which makes it quality Adult Contemporary in my book.

I'm pretty neutral on Clapton, though, I like a few of his 60s and early 70s things and could take or leave the rest. I know plenty of people who would legitimately be reluctant to socialize with people who like Clapton, though. Same with Pearl Jam (who I'm also pretty neutral on).

I'm of the same mind as you RE: his body of work, but I also still get some dark chuckles out of the fact that he wrote a hit song about how awesome cocaine was, and years later his kid OD'ed on it and died. It's not as if he actually killed his son, but it's still the first child death I found myself laughing at.
