This is hardly the eleventh most evil thing he's said.

That guy - 2016-02-26

Doing shit like this, or saying you'll do shit like this is just a propaganda gambit when it comes to enemies like ISIS (vs managing relations with the broader muslim world). It works or fails to work, end of story. It may be stupid but it ain't evil.

DerangedGoblin - 2016-02-26

Hate Trump all you like, but he has a really good point, and there are a lot of examples of this working in recent history.

In 2001, a religious group in the Middle East managed to hijack a handful of planes in the US and killed a fair few people. They made video tapes and sent them to the US that said "take this as a warning", and for 25 years there wasn't a problem.

In 2002, (unrelated to the 2001 incident), the US decided, uncharacteristically, to take a hard stance on terrorists and opened a prison in Cuba. They wouldn't kill the terrorists, but they would put them through hell and torture them. A similar facility was opened in Abu Ghraib. And for 25 years there wasn't a problem.

In 2003, the US government invaded Iraq (it was unrelated to the previous example), and made an example of its dictator and all of his political party. And for 25 years there wasn't a problem.

Well, "wasn't a problem" so long as you understand who the problem is meant to be for.

Were the floodgates recently opened for new registrations?

Is this...performance art?

EvilHomer - 2016-02-26

I don't know about performance art. I think it's sarcasm, and the premeditated use of irony in order to draw attention to certain problems DerangedGoblin has with what Mr Trump is saying. I say this because there have not yet been 25 years since the incidents Mr Goblin describes, and because Mr Goblin repeatedly states that the examples he gives were "unrelated". This indictes, to me, that Mr Goblin has an eye for the absurd.

Which I guess could be considered "performance art", given the right perspective.

I... what? Poetv is getting REALLY meta lately

EvilHomer - 2016-02-26

Funnily enough, Mr Trump DOES have a point. Mr Trump is referring to the Philippine-American War; the story he relates is apocryphal, but the broader context in which it occured (i.e. the violent suppression of Islamic dissidents by the American military) was perfectly true. The US did crack down on Muslim terrorists, and it did lead to a period of relative stability (compared to the anti-colonial anarchy of the late Spanish occupation).

However, what Mr Trump fails to mention is that not long after Pershing left, the Filipino Moros went back to their old tricks, and the region has had a "Muslim terrorist problem" ever since! In fact, even today, the Southern Phillipines is considered a battlefront for OEF - with Marine Corps personnel and CIA operatives regularly going boots on the ground against local Muslim separatists, with nearly zero mainstream awareness back home (thanks Obama). But, again - not really "a problem", so long as you understand who the problem is for.

EvilHomer - 2016-02-26

ALSO, I gotta say that it's refreshing to hear an American politician talk about the Philippine-American War, in public, in front of voters. Trump is a highbrow guy, and this is probably the realest thing any candidate will say this season.

Trump/Chomsky 2016?

Foreign policy by Buffy the Vampire Slayer.

Dr Robot - 2016-02-26

Good. Fuck Islam. Muhammad was a false prophet.

EvilHomer - 2016-02-26

Assuming he even existed, and assuming that the Arabs of his time were actually Muslims to begin with.

jangbones - 2016-02-26

Poetv comments somehow becoming more hilarious with time
