I was going to submit this but forgot.
I love this guy.

jfcaron_ca - 2016-02-16

I really like Lee's themes and delivery style. I might get annoyed sitting through an entire show though...it seems he does a lot of long pauses or repetitions as part of his gig.

SolRo - 2016-02-16

This comedy is a little too challenging for Hazelnut and his ilk.

Hazelnut - 2016-02-16

Five stars for SolRo still sniffling. Someone get the guy a kleenex.

Me, I like Stewart Lee -- including this bit -- and I like Carlin, and I like Chappelle. I like Mike Judge and Stephen Colbert. I like Amy Schumer but must admit I'm bored with Sarah Silverman. I _love_ Flight of the Conchords. My criteria for comedy is if it makes me chuckle, not if it agrees with an ideology.

Not sure who my 'ilk' actually is: I guess those who plan to vote for Hillary but not to enjoy it.

SolRo - 2016-02-16

Your ilk being you and the whiney princesses complaining about "SJWs" suppressing different and "challenging" concepts in comedy, then voting down comedy that doesn't support your narrow views.

Hazelnut - 2016-02-16

You shouldn't say "princess" as an insult, SolRo, especially paired with "whiny". It stigmatizes femininity and those who identify as feminine. You might as well hint that I'm "gay" while you're at it, like you have in the last few threads.

Your bigotry doesn't belong here.

Bort - 2016-02-16

"Me, I like Stewart Lee -- including this bit"

You voted it down in the hopper, dude.

Hazelnut - 2016-02-16

Well, yeah, it didn't strike me as especially evil and I find the whole 'let's post comedians at each other to argue a point' thing a bit lame. My opinion changed once I understood this to be SolRo Sniffles Week, hence the stars.

Old_Zircon - 2016-02-16

Laura Silverman > Sarah Silverman

Waugh - 2016-02-16

every week is solro sniffles week

Anaxagoras - 2016-02-16

To be fair to Carlin, his PC comedy bit was only exploring one facet of the issue... and he's more-or-less right, as far as he goes. In all the interviews I saw of him, he always seemed smart & thoughtful, so maybe he understood the broader picture, and only felt like commenting on one portion of PC culture.

Anyhoo... yay Stewart Lee! Despite the fact that he's been around forever, I haven't been able to find much of his stuff.. but pretty much everything I *have* found is awesome.

bawbag - 2016-02-17

Fair points.

If you search for Lee & Herring, and/or TMWRNJ (This morning with Richard not Judy), those were the first of his stuff I really got into back then.

It seems to split people 50/50 on the funny/not funny though.

lotsmoreorcs - 2016-02-16

hyPOEcracy tag?

bongoprophet - 2016-02-16

so what is your thing again? I thought lotsmoreorcs was someone who died and who we held a tribute to?

now you seem to be conducting a Waugh-like yet slightly less vitriolic hate campaign against crusty old farts, is that about it?

SolRo - 2016-02-16

He's pro-crusty old farts.

he's tired of those damn kids not being racist on his lawn

Hazelnut - 2016-02-16

You know SolRo, discrimination against the elderly is still a thing, and is still prejudice. You need to educate yourself.

oddeye - 2016-02-16

All old people are racist and own lawns. Also they play golf and complain about Democrats and thier medicare co-pays. You shouldn't hire them because they are slow and fall asleep a lot.

Old_Zircon - 2016-02-16

If I remember right, New Orcs is run by a few different people.

Tough American Bouncer - 2016-02-16

Comedy wise this is not a solid bit. Argument wise it is dishonest. Carlin wins this round.

That guy - 2016-02-16

Explain?

I disagree on both fronts. The bit at the end is dragged out, otherwise it's funny and makes its points well. Furthermore, it doesn't have to be at odds with attacks on the bullshit side of PC. See what Anaxagoras said about Carlin talking about only facet side of it.

That guy - 2016-02-16

*only one facet of it

American Standard - 2016-02-16

True enough, but not a particularly great delivery. Not much worth watching after 6:10.

But, yeah. "Political correctness gone mad" shakes out to "I can't believe my derogatory hate speech has consequences" more often than it doesn't.

Hazelnut - 2016-02-16

Tell that to Stephen Fry.

Old_Zircon - 2016-02-16

Tell that to Alice Dreger.

GravidWithHate - 2016-02-16

If you accept his definition of political correctness, he's entirely right. Unfortunately, his definition of political correctness is incomplete. What may have started as formalized politeness has mutated into this weird "Intersectional Privilege" mode of thinking common on the left where when dealing with any issue you first examine the perceived privilege of the participants and decide that whoever has the least privilege must be morally in the right. Where it's not possible to pretend the actions of the less privileged parties are right (Cologne, Rotherham, Charlie Hebdo, the Paris Massacre, the Duke Lacrosse case, the Rolling Stone rape allegations), you either intimate that the victims deserved it because privilege, or call anyone who talks about it racist/misogynist/whatever-ist. That's what I have a problem with. I completely agree with Lee on the value of inclusive language and trying to make things as formally inclusive as possible. But that's not what's being discussed when we talk about political correctness.

Old_Zircon - 2016-02-16

Here it is again.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Political_correctness

Yeah, Wkipedia etc. etc. but this is one of their good ones.

Void 71 - 2016-02-16

Imagine if truly 'privileged' limousine liberals like Stewart Lee used their influence to criticize Islam in a morally correct way instead of wagging their fingers at those who don't.

Nominal - 2016-02-16

Which is odd because the large majority of this stuff comes from middle upper class white college kids.

Nominal - 2016-02-16

uh, upper middle class

That guy - 2016-02-16

Sure. He's only talking about part of the picture, as is Carlin, and they're both being disingenuous about the whole picture.

If you allow them each their distorted POV, they're good bits. As pure philosophy they both suck.

SolRo - 2016-02-16

The difference between the extreme edge of PC and the not so subtly racist/bigot middle of the anti-PC movements is that one is secluded to forum drama and some over publicized sheltered college exhibits while the other is blared over AM radio, has a dedicated TV station for it, and basically a whole political party as its members.

That's what the little anti-PC Warriors on PoE don't seem to grasp or intentionally ignore.

When Bernie or Hilary start giving trigger warnings for every speech and demand safe spaces to debate, maybe then you can compare it to the conservatives blaming 'PC culture' for them getting backlash over derogatory comments and bigoted agendas.

SolRo - 2016-02-16

Or to put it a clearer way;

You're on the same side as Void right now. Think about that.

GravidWithHate - 2016-02-16

SolRo: Everything is not a tug of war between good and evil. I am not under any obligation to pick sides; recognize the validity of the sides you picked; or change either of the previous two statements because someone fails to understand that you can arrive at the same conclusion from different sets of premises.
