SPOILER ALERT:

Things don't go well for Sal.

Caminante Nocturno - 2016-02-07

He never stops smiling after this scene, though.

posertom - 2016-02-07

I watched this movie yesterday. Weird. And so good. Without a doubt, the best Batman soundtrack.

garcet71283 - 2016-02-07

This movie was good primarily because for the first (and last time) Batman actually had character in it.

lotsmoreorcs - 2016-02-07

without a doubt the best batman movie

Well, some of DC's recent direct-to-video offerings are pretty damn good too. "Batman: Year One", "Under the Red Hood", and "Son of Batman" spring to mind.

There hasn't been a better Joker than Mark Hamill's, though. All respect to Heath Ledger and his very singular take, there's no comparing him to anyone else, but Mark Hamill sets the standard.

infinite zest - 2016-02-08

I think I liked Ledger's a little more, but that's got nothing to do with his untimely death: I liked TAS a lot but I first got into Batman comics with Dark Knight Returns, which pretty much got exchanged the comic relief elaborate scheme Joker (almost like a Bluto to Popeye) for a true psychopath, and that's how I always imagined him sounding and acting like.

Caminante Nocturno - 2016-02-07

After Batman kills Captain Clown, the Joker marries his wife.

Xenocide - 2016-02-07

DEAR HARLEY:

AM DUMPING YOU FOR A ROBOT. UNLIKE YOU, SHE LETS ME REMOVE PIECES OF HER CHEEK AND PUT THEM IN MY POCKET WHENEVER I WANT. ALSO SHE'S A MAID. GEORGE JETSON HAD A ROBOT MAID, AND YOU KNOW WHAT SHE CALLED HIM? "MR. J." CAN'T BELIEVE YOU'D PLAGIARIZE LIKE THAT. THIS CLOWN MARRIAGE IS OVER.

INCAPABLE OF FEELING LOVE,

THE JOKER

PS: By now you might have noticed the white powder I coated this envelope with. Toodles!

Rodents of Unusual Size - 2016-02-07

I was able to read that entirely with his voice. Five stars for you!

Xenocide - 2016-02-07

What's great about Hamill's Joker (and this scene in particular) is that he's genuinely funny without ever losing his sinister, unhinged vibe. Modern portrayals tend to go too far in the scary direction, to the point that you end up with a generic psycho killer who just happens to be wearing clown makeup.

This Joker is all the more frightening because you actually can laugh at him, and that feels weird because you know that there's a monster lurking right under the gags.

Bort - 2016-02-07

Yes. You simply can't read what he's going to do next; you have no idea when you might say or do the wrong thing, and a seemingly innocuous play on words is him announcing your death.

Mark Hamill may not have written the material being delivered, but he certainly knows how to change up the tone and make the Joker tough to read.

Two Jar Slave - 2016-02-08

I have no trouble agreeing that Hamill played the best Joker on the small screen, and I preferred him to Nicholson too--Ledger's a tough call. But I would like to submit Brent Spiner as the worst Joker, worse even than Bender the robot, for his appearance in the otherwise good Young Justice show.

EvilHomer - 2016-02-08

Actually, I think you guys will find that the best Joker is Jared Leto. As a rock god and subversive actor from such films as Lord of War and Fight Club, Leto can understand The Joker's motivations better than anyone else. Also, he's got tattoos, which make him look hardcore and even a little... iNsAne!?

Plus Will Smith has confidence in him, so you know he's gonna be good.

Bort - 2016-02-08

Two Jar Slave: the worst Joker is Joker from "The Batman", the show where they insisted that Batman is always "The Batman" but the Joker is always just "Joker".

It wasn't that it was terrible exactly, but it was trying way too hard.

I can find little to appreciate about "The Batman".

Seven Arts/H8 Red - 2016-02-08

I recently listened to the Batman: The Animated Series commentary on "Heart of Ice", where Bruce Timm talks about Mark Hamill originally coming in as Ferris Boyle. Hamill was eager to do one of the main villains, but The Joker had been cast at that point.

It's not said in the commentary, but the original casting choice for The Joker was Tim Curry. I wonder why the DC Original Animated Movies don't at least give him a run as The Joker. I can't see Curry being worse than Spiner or Kevin Michael Richardson.

Two Jar Slave - 2016-02-09

Allegedly, Tim Curry's Joker was too frightening for a cartoon at the time. There's a short demo video on YouTube of his take, and it's pretty dark compared to Hamill.

Caminante Nocturno - 2016-02-09

What I wouldn't give to hear Tim Curry yell "You killed Captain Clown!"

cognitivedissonance - 2016-02-07

I think part of the brilliance of the original Batman TAS was that the voice acting was so spot on, well cast. Biff Tannen as Joe Chill was fantastic.

bluebeetle - 2016-02-12

It wasn't Joe Chill he was Tony Zucco the guy who ordered the sabotage that killed Robin's parents.
