These are nuts and I love them.

I recognized Batman and the Donkey Kong page, what was going on with the rest of it?

holy god these are great

Old_Zircon - 2016-02-04

I want these to be animated, and I want to do the sound design and music for it.

So, if I get the argument correctly...

MPCE : B leads to A. Return A.
LMO : A leads to A. Return A.
SHV : Not A leads to B leads to Not B. B leads to X. Return Not B. Return R.

Ashtar, help.

Scrotum H. Vainglorious - 2016-02-04

Fuck me, I'm sorry I said that orcs.

sometimes when i get down about my shitty life i flail around on an obscure video portal site, personally attacking someones artistic output, someone who had the balls to actually create something and share it rather than stick their finger up their ass and try to stick it in other peoples mouths.

im going to kick back now, hit the button on my couch that kicks up the little leg rest that i love so much, slam a little drugs, smoke a little weed, crack open an IPA and check out this new horace and pete louis ck thing on my 70 inch. and when my head hits the tempurpedic and yours hits those rolled up hoodies filled with dead sweat, just allow yourself to ruminate on the difference between lashing out on a forum and actual quality of life. i will pay pal you a thousand dollars to fuck off

Have an IPA for me too! Best I can do is Old German with a little grapefruit juice in pint glass (surprisingly tasty but still)..

But what's wrong with self-submitting? That's, like, more than half of Youtube! Plus this is a pretty tight community of friends (that love to argue, wouldn't have it any other way) and not the faceless void of facebook or YT. I haven't met any of you (except for Chet if he's still checking in) but it's a small enough world that I went to a place that I've mentioned several times on here and there was a poester who was looking for me because we talked about getting beers on here, that's how small the world is. I say if you have something awesome to bring to the table, then bring it! I'll watch.

1) Content belongs here if it's poeworthy, whether it's poester-generated content or not. I personally don't find coggy-d's drawings interesting, but they're poeworthy for sure.

If people start posting unpoetv stuff, I'll one-star case by case.

This isn't poenews or something.

I take partial responsibility, posting that Bernie Sanders speech the other day made people think this was Poe News.

Also there's the long standing, unspoken taboo against posting your own stuff even though people do it sometimes and mostly I don't think anyone cares anymore. But I know personally I hardly ever post my own stuff because of that history.

infinite zest - 2016-02-04

Holy. Fucking. Shit. I ALWAYS thought it was a Beatles song!!!! Damn my stupid millennial knowledge of classic rock.

Bort - 2016-02-04

It's "MacArthur Park" and it was most famously covered by Richard Harris. It's a song about a guy who foolishly turned his back on his chance for love, tries to go on and live a fulfilling live, but still wistfully remembers what he gave up. The cake that someone left out in the rain is supposed to be a wedding cake, so symbolic of pissing away one's chance at love.

Not sure what to make of "the birds, like tender babies in her hands, ..." but I prefer to think of it as "the birds like tender babies", full stop. Or, perhaps, "The Byrds like tender babies".

Old_Zircon - 2016-02-04

I always forget it was written for The Association and the Richard Harris version only happened because they rejected it.

I'm most familiar with the terrible, 90s Mad Magazine parody "Jurassic Park."

I wish I still had my old, shitty early 90s mad magazines so I could figure out what I was thinking of, they definitely had a shitty MacArthur Park parody printed in one of their special issues, I distinctly remember reading it in 6th or 7th grade before I'd heard the song.

These magick sigils of yours seem to be having quite an effect on some of the locals.

Say, pursuant to some of what's above, why don't you illustrate a choice bit of this thread? Meme drew up a nice schematic for the circuit, you could wire it and light it up.

Bort - 2016-02-04

OW - I just finished building my blinky light thing today. Two potentiometers, one to control the brightness at which it turns on, the other to control the blink rate. If you made some kind of basic 555 timer based thing an understand it you're already ahead of me, though. I've built some syntheizer kits and some tube amps and some fuzz pedals but I'm just good at putting stuff together, I don't know shit about how most of it works.

Oscar Wildcat - 2016-02-04

In point of fact, pots are well known in these parts. Might I suggest the Gorilla Glue #4?

I just received some thermocouples: gonna fire up the blast furnace 1200C or more tomorrow. Hotter than biscuits.

Oscar Wildcat - 2016-02-04

I'll guess Bort's circuit is some kind of primitive relaxation oscillator with a transistor, caps and timing resistors.

Old_Zircon - 2016-02-04

You two already have me beat.

If you think you're going to be doing electronics stuff as a regular hobby I can't stress enough how much it's worth buying a nice, professional quality soldering station. Doesn't have to be some crazy digital thing but dropping 0 or so on a really solid, production grade Weller is absolutely worth it. I got one of these

http://tinyurl.com/znw98wr

maybe 12 years ago and use it all the time, one of the best purchases I've ever made. You'll be finding excuses to solder stuff just because it's so satisfying with a good iron. I've even been doing surface mount ICs a little lately and haven't burned one yet.

Old_Zircon - 2016-02-04

Oscar, since you have a blast furnace I assume you are some kind of metalworker. If yes, would you be interested in working out some kind of trade? I'd love to have somebody forge me a waterphone, and I could make some sort of wooden stringed instrument in return, maybe a lap steel with a hand wound custom pickup?

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hDaKd90Yq3o

Bort - 2016-02-04

OZ - it is basically an op amp that powers a 555 chip that oscillates an LED. The op amp is there to decide whether the ambient light (detected by a photoresistor) is below the threshold set by a potentiometer.

My initial plan was to use transistors instead of an op amp but I couldn't figure out a design where a lot of power wouldn't be wasted on the transistor. An op amp doesn't have that problem because its two inputs don't have to supply any current, just a voltage. The voltage dividers that provide the inputs are each a minimum of 500k, so negligible power consumption.

I wouldn't mind an electronics bench and a good solder station, but Festung Bort has at least two cats too stupid to keep their noses out of hot electronics, so I use a desk with a sliding keyboard tray that lets me quickly hide the hot things from the cats. Side note, silicon baking sheets are tolerably good soldering mats.

And in case you're ever looking for tiny project boxes (or just parts boxes), these fuckers are worth their weight in gold:

https://www.dollartree.com/Plastic-Snack-Containers-with-Lock- Top-Lids-3-ct-Packs/p352768/index.pro

Old_Zircon - 2016-02-05

Those dollar tree boxes look waay nicer than the Ikea ones I've been using, thanks!

Bort - 2016-02-05

I didn't mean that they're fancy, smartypants. They're cheap, they're durable, they're waterproof, they're nonconductive, they're easy to melt holes into, and the entire top pops off for easy access. A 9V battery plus a circuit board and a few extra doodads (like 1/4" jacks or potentiometers) fit nicely.

Not even the intelligent design behind the banana surpasses these things.

Oscar Wildcat - 2016-02-05

If only I had another lifetime, I'd love to build stuff like that all day ( the waterphone, that is ). I was sort of expecting some actual forging, but all that was done in the clip was some light welding. Frankly, you could do something like this yourself without too much trouble. It looks like he's using 1/4" rounds of w1 steel for the resonators. The sounding body could be something else besides that fancy bell, that looked the most tedious part of the construction.

Bort: I've used LMB titefit boxes in the past, but they are very expensive. More often these days, the circuits use big components ( like this 1200V 600amp continuous IGBT ) so I tend to mount these things on wooden bases with sheet aluminum cut for the face plate. Also, I've gotten pretty good at repurposing salvaged cases from other things, specifically those old desktop computer power supplies. Either they work, and you've got a great power supply for a project, or they don't, in which case you've got a great case already fitted with fan and power plug.

EvilHomer - 2016-02-05

What about a katana? Could you forge a katana, Mr Wildcat?

Old_Zircon - 2016-02-05

The resonators are actually a copper alloy I believe, if I were going to do it I'd start with some cymbal brass (maybe a small gong and a 14" crash) and hammer it out. But I don't have any kind of tools or facility for it, what little work space I have is geared toward electronics and making guitars. I think the original patent document specifies bronze.

Old_Zircon - 2016-02-05

Oh, and the bell is critical because it's the water moving inside of it that gives it the characteristic sound. Waterphone making has actually become pretty refined since the 70s, and there's definitely a "correct" sound for them (watch almost any horror movie made between 1980 and 1990 and you'll hear it - it's all over the soundtrack for The Hunger), and I've heard some really poor sounding ones on Youtube (usually made by welding stamped steel bowls and things like that). That guy makes it look simpler than it is, it's kind of like hand hammering a cymbal and tuning a violin top at the same time.

But yeah, I'd love to try making one myself, I just don't have the space or time. Maybe I can find someone at the local metalworkers' collective space who needs a lap steel, that seems like about an even trade.

Old_Zircon - 2016-02-05

Actually, this is the perfect place to ask a really basic electronics question that I've actually had some trouble finding an answer to for some reason:

I've gt an amp about 3/4 complete but the power transformer I have on hand is for international use, to there are a few different taps on the primary for different input voltages, and the schematic only shows one. I assumed at first that I would just cap the unused primary leads but when I was checking around on line I saw a wiring diagram for a kit version of the same amp and they had the unused primaries grounded to the chassis at one of the PT mounting bolts, so now I'm not sure. That doesn't make any sense to me (wouldn't that just mean some of the input current would travel to ground through the chassis?) but like I said earlier my theoretical understanding of electronics is almost zero, I can't find anything about this scenario on line other than that diagram, and I don't know any local builders or techs who can help - the one guy I know who took an amp building class knows even less than me (he actually paid me to wire up a counter for his pickup winder because he couldn't follow the diagram that came with it - two leads power leads and one magnetic switch that shorted to ground to increment the turn count), and his only suggestion was "buy a different transformer."

Oscar Wildcat - 2016-02-05

Yeah, that's the craft part, making that big bell. As you say, he makes it look easy but I can appreciate it's a bear by hand.

Bronze is bell metal and of course would be wonderful but have you priced it recently? Holy shit. W1 is cheap cheap cheap and you can tune it to whatever hardness you want.

If you've got the bux for bronze, why don't you start with a cast bronze bell. something you can put threaded holes in. Then thread the 1/4" bronze rounds, screw them into the bell and there's your animal. No welding or heat treating required.

Don't short the tranny ends together, but perhaps tie one end to ground if they are floating and you have 60hz hum. Check the connections with an ohmmeter so you know what you think you know about the wiring.

Old_Zircon - 2016-02-06

I don't have the money for bronze, but I think hammered is probably the way to go for something like this. There are plenty of nice sounding cast bronze metallophones but this thing looks closer to a cymbal and cast/stamped cymbals are uniformly terrible. I don't know enough about metallurgy to know why (I top out at "copper gets harder and more brittle after you hammer it" and "don't brew your coffee in a non-anodized aluminum pot").

I already checked continuity on all of the leads because the color labeling was a bit wonky (the primary and secondary leads all come out the same side so the only way to tell a couple of them apart without measuring was length) and it's definitely a bunch of taps with a single lead for the cold side of the AC plug. But if I had, for example, the 120v primary tap wired to the hot AC lead, the other end of the coil to the cold AC lead, and the 240 primary tap to ground, wouldn't I be getting current flowing from the 120v tap to the grounded 240v tap as well as from the 120 to the cold lead?

I'm going to check around more to be on the safe side, since almost everything I've done before was DC and this is the first AC project I've done without documentation, so I don't want to electrocute myself by making a stupid, basic mistake, but I really appreciate the advice, it's very helpful.

Oscar Wildcat - 2016-02-06

I mention testing because it struck me that it is often the case that 120/240 type transformers are done by using the primary windings in series or in parallel depending on voltage. Look at the bottom of this page for some detailed diagrams/advice.

http://federalpacific.com/training/transformer-basics/chapter- 2.htm

My best advice without looking at the xformer is to test it outside the amp circuit. With all the windings open, apply power to just two primary wires ( a tap and the common terminal ) and look at the open circuit secondary voltage with your meter. Is it what you think it should be? If not, fool with the windings as the link above shows. If you use a variac for providing the primary side test voltage you can do all kinds of evil experimenting on just say 10V input and not have to worry about something stupid burning out your DUT.

Old_Zircon - 2016-02-06

Interesting. It has primaries for 100v, 105v, 120v, 240v and one other I forget right now. There was continuity between all of them and the cold lead (as well as each other) when I checked so I assumed they weren't designed to be wired in series for different voltages, which would be supported by the schematic (which was drawn for this transformer, they just omitted the unused leads - I started with a cheap Chinese kit from eBay since it was a good way to get a chassis, turretboard and other hardware, I just swapped out the capacitors and tubes for something actually decent and will put in a better output transformer later on when I've finished it and confirmed that it works; ended up paying half what I'd have paid for a similar kit from a more reputable source), but that's as far as I got, all I needed to do was figure out which were primary and which were secondary for a couple that had the same color. I'll definitely check that everything's in order before I hook it up. I've seen that page before, actually, but it's way more information than I need for this, and doesn't actually cover what I'm trying to figure out.

Thanks for the help though, it has definitely got me going in the right direction.

Jet Bin Fever - 2016-02-04

I like your art and your blog a lot Cog, but I still say you should get a cheap scanner instead of taking blurry cellphone pics.

Anaxagoras - 2016-02-05

Well then.

I've learned a lot about several posters... but I'm not sure what or about whom.

I'm a strong proponent of the Heisenberg Uncertainty Principle approach to learning.

Old_Zircon - 2016-02-05

How come, even at the height of Breaking Bad's popularity, I never heard anyone mention the whole underlying (and almost definitely deliberate, I can't imagine it not being) metajoke that he called himself Heisenberg because the whole show is based on the uncertainty principle, in that the harder Walter tries to understand or control any one of the different plot elements or characters (including himself), the less he is able to understand or control any of the others?

I mean, I kind of worded that awkwardly but I'm sure you can see what I'm getting at, it's the narrative device that the entire series was written around, especially the first two seasons.

There's no way people didn't pick up on that but I've never once heard anyone mention it in real life or online.

Heh.. my best friend brought that up to me when I was resigned to the fact that BB would be completely spoiled to me no matter what I did, attending a Breaking Bad Series Finale screening at the bar, the Season Finale being the first episode I'd seen. Didn't stop us from both getting matching Pollos Hermanos t-shirts though, and I wish there was a way to show u a picture of his Heisenberg Halloween costume but he's such a fucking dead ringer for White/Heisenberg that's fucking eerie, even though he's only my age, and his hair's twice as long as mine is. He did a job that few makeup artists could pull off.

But he's the only one who ever mentioned that. Compare that to the X-Files, complete with Mulder's ringtone of the X-Files theme. Barf. Where's Gilligan when you need him? Like I said, I think I know enough and am caught up enough to enjoy Better Call Saul's fanservice, so I'm probably going to wait for that to finish and then start BB from the beginning some day to see if it works forwards and backwards.

Season 4 isn't the worst part of Breaking Bad (the end of the season 2 finale is the worst part in my book, too much deus ex machina, too many coincidences, and even some crappy CGI) but it's not the best, either. If you liked it, I bet you're going to really like the rest of the series.

Glad I'm not the only one who thought of that Heisenberg thing, though. It seemed really obvious but completely ignored.

From what I've seen (I kinda started again with the the introduction of Saul and then kinda forgot about it again) I'm just amazed that Hank (and everybody else) could never figure it out. Cranston's good at being a bad actor when he's Walter lying through his teeth, but seriously!?!!

I think I like Better Call Saul more. I imagine real cooks and dealers watch Breaking Bad the same way as Escobar watched Scarface, but my dad's a lawyer so I trust his opinion and he's like "yeah this is spot on." Like, he's known thousands of Sauls/Jimmys in his life. Plus it's such a slow burn. Looking forward to the second season.

I agree that Better Call Saul is superior over all.

Also ever since it came out a local injury lawyer has had ads up at bus stops around ton with the slogan "In pain? Better call Wayne!" in a too-close-to-be-coincidence font.
