OZ - it is basically an op amp that powers a 555 chip that oscillates an LED. The op amp is there to decide whether the ambient light (detected by a photoresistor) is below the threshold set by a potentiometer.

My initial plan was to use transistors instead of an op amp but I couldn't figure out a design where a lot of power wouldn't be wasted on the transistor. An op amp doesn't have that problem because its two inputs don't have to supply any current, just a voltage. The voltage dividers that provide the inputs are each a minimum of 500k, so negligible power consumption.

I wouldn't mind an electronics bench and a good solder station, but Festung Bort has at least two cats too stupid to keep their noses out of hot electronics, so I use a desk with a sliding keyboard tray that lets me quickly hide the hot things from the cats. Side note, silicon baking sheets are tolerably good soldering mats.

I didn't mean that they're fancy, smartypants. They're cheap, they're durable, they're waterproof, they're nonconductive, they're easy to melt holes into, and the entire top pops off for easy access. A 9V battery plus a circuit board and a few extra doodads (like 1/4" jacks or potentiometers) fit nicely.

Not even the intelligent design behind the banana surpasses these things.

If only I had another lifetime, I'd love to build stuff like that all day ( the waterphone, that is ). I was sort of expecting some actual forging, but all that was done in the clip was some light welding. Frankly, you could do something like this yourself without too much trouble. It looks like he's using 1/4" rounds of w1 steel for the resonators. The sounding body could be something else besides that fancy bell, that looked the most tedious part of the construction.

Bort: I've used LMB titefit boxes in the past, but they are very expensive. More often these days, the circuits use big components ( like this 1200V 600amp continuous IGBT ) so I tend to mount these things on wooden bases with sheet aluminum cut for the face plate. Also, I've gotten pretty good at repurposing salvaged cases from other things, specifically those old desktop computer power supplies. Either they work, and you've got a great power supply for a project, or they don't, in which case you've got a great case already fitted with fan and power plug.

What about a katana? Could you forge a katana, Mr Wildcat?

The resonators are actually a copper alloy I believe, if I were going to do it I'd start with some cymbal brass (maybe a small gong and a 14" crash) and hammer it out. But I don't have any kind of tools or facility for it, what little work space I have is geared toward electronics and making guitars. I think the original patent document specifies bronze.

Oh, and the bell is critical because it's the water moving inside of it that gives it the characteristic sound. Waterphone making has actually become pretty refined since the 70s, and there's definitely a "correct" sound for them (watch almost any horror movie made between 1980 and 1990 and you'll hear it - it's all over the soundtrack for The Hunger), and I've heard some really poor sounding ones on Youtube (usually made by welding stamped steel bowls and things like that). That guy makes it look simpler than it is, it's kind of like hand hammering a cymbal and tuning a violin top at the same time.

But yeah, I'd love to try making one myself, I just don't have the space or time. Maybe I can find someone at the local metalworkers' collective space who needs a lap steel, that seems like about an even trade.

Actually, this is the perfect place to ask a really basic electronics question that I've actually had some trouble finding an answer to for some reason:

I've gt an amp about 3/4 complete but the power transformer I have on hand is for international use, to there are a few different taps on the primary for different input voltages, and the schematic only shows one. I assumed at first that I would just cap the unused primary leads but when I was checking around on line I saw a wiring diagram for a kit version of the same amp and they had the unused primaries grounded to the chassis at one of the PT mounting bolts, so now I'm not sure. That doesn't make any sense to me (wouldn't that just mean some of the input current would travel to ground through the chassis?) but like I said earlier my theoretical understanding of electronics is almost zero, I can't find anything about this scenario on line other than that diagram, and I don't know any local builders or techs who can help - the one guy I know who took an amp building class knows even less than me (he actually paid me to wire up a counter for his pickup winder because he couldn't follow the diagram that came with it - two leads power leads and one magnetic switch that shorted to ground to increment the turn count), and his only suggestion was "buy a different transformer."

Yeah, that's the craft part, making that big bell. As you say, he makes it look easy but I can appreciate it's a bear by hand.

Bronze is bell metal and of course would be wonderful but have you priced it recently? Holy shit. W1 is cheap cheap cheap and you can tune it to whatever hardness you want.

If you've got the bux for bronze, why don't you start with a cast bronze bell. something you can put threaded holes in. Then thread the 1/4" bronze rounds, screw them into the bell and there's your animal. No welding or heat treating required.

Don't short the tranny ends together, but perhaps tie one end to ground if they are floating and you have 60hz hum. Check the connections with an ohmmeter so you know what you think you know about the wiring.

I don't have the money for bronze, but I think hammered is probably the way to go for something like this. There are plenty of nice sounding cast bronze metallophones but this thing looks closer to a cymbal and cast/stamped cymbals are uniformly terrible. I don't know enough about metallurgy to know why (I top out at "copper gets harder and more brittle after you hammer it" and "don't brew your coffee in a non-anodized aluminum pot").

I already checked continuity on all of the leads because the color labeling was a bit wonky (the primary and secondary leads all come out the same side so the only way to tell a couple of them apart without measuring was length) and it's definitely a bunch of taps with a single lead for the cold side of the AC plug. But if I had, for example, the 120v primary tap wired to the hot AC lead, the other end of the coil to the cold AC lead, and the 240 primary tap to ground, wouldn't I be getting current flowing from the 120v tap to the grounded 240v tap as well as from the 120 to the cold lead?

I'm going to check around more to be on the safe side, since almost everything I've done before was DC and this is the first AC project I've done without documentation, so I don't want to electrocute myself by making a stupid, basic mistake, but I really appreciate the advice, it's very helpful.

I mention testing because it struck me that it is often the case that 120/240 type transformers are done by using the primary windings in series or in parallel depending on voltage. Look at the bottom of this page for some detailed diagrams/advice.

My best advice without looking at the xformer is to test it outside the amp circuit. With all the windings open, apply power to just two primary wires ( a tap and the common terminal ) and look at the open circuit secondary voltage with your meter. Is it what you think it should be? If not, fool with the windings as the link above shows. If you use a variac for providing the primary side test voltage you can do all kinds of evil experimenting on just say 10V input and not have to worry about something stupid burning out your DUT.

Interesting. It has primaries for 100v, 105v, 120v, 240v and one other I forget right now. There was continuity between all of them and the cold lead (as well as each other) when I checked so I assumed they weren't designed to be wired in series for different voltages, which would be supported by the schematic (which was drawn for this transformer, they just omitted the unused leads - I started with a cheap Chinese kit from eBay since it was a good way to get a chassis, turretboard and other hardware, I just swapped out the capacitors and tubes for something actually decent and will put in a better output transformer later on when I've finished it and confirmed that it works; ended up paying half what I'd have paid for a similar kit from a more reputable source), but that's as far as I got, all I needed to do was figure out which were primary and which were secondary for a couple that had the same color. I'll definitely check that everything's in order before I hook it up. I've seen that page before, actually, but it's way more information than I need for this, and doesn't actually cover what I'm trying to figure out.

Season 4 isn't the worst part of Breaking Bad (the end of the season 2 finale is the worst part in my book, too much deus ex machina, too many coincidences, and even some crappy CGI) but it's not the best, either. If you liked it, I bet you're going to really like the rest of the series.
