Impossible to pretend to take this seriously the minute you see John de Lancie

infinite zest - 2016-02-04

I remember this! Didn't a lot of people freak out thinking it was real?

Rodents of Unusual Size - 2016-02-04

Never heard of this, but honestly this is a much better way for the world to go for John de Lancie rather than becoming a voice on My Little Pony.

Wikipedia had to refresh my memory, but this came out on Halloween weekend, back when you could still go trick or treating by yourself. All I remember was coming home and watching the rest with my parents, but I guess there was some mass panic with parents frantically looking for their sons and daughters (in costume of course) because the end was nigh.

Rodents of Unusual Size - 2016-02-04

Kids don't trick or treat alone anymore? I usually live in shitty apartments or neighborhoods where kids don't trick or treat so that really bums me out.

Kids can trick or treat alone, but in general it's not really the norm, even in my old (now-gentrified) neighborhood. For the last couple of years I've gone as a care provider and there's always a chaperone for the kids. But when I lived in Wisconsin it was always with adult supervision, apparently, since there were the Dahmers and Geins of the world to watch out for.. :/

Seriously, no place above ground would be safe.

Also, breaking into regular programming was done much better by "Special Bulletin"

Yeah, it's a pretty good tactic. Like I said above I saw maybe the last half of this, but if I was watching from the beginning it might have freaked me out if I had no idea what movie I was about to watch, especially since I was 11 and had end-of-the-world paranoia like crazy back then.

Anybody remember how this was marketed, if it was marketed at all? One of the reasons why people freaked out was because during commercial breaks they'd switch to other networks to see if they were covering it, or call their friends, or ABC, NBC et al and ask why they weren't covering it, so they missed all the disclaimers that popped up during every commercial break telling people that it was all a work of fiction. So, basically the same as what happened with War of the Worlds (who did make the disclaimer before it began), just on a smaller scale.

..but to finish my thought, if it was advertised in advance as an apocalyptic newscast, that would've destroyed the illusion, but if it was just advertised as the little movie at the beginning, then nobody would've wanted to tune in because it's pretty stupid.

I fixed the link for special bulletin last year after I saw it. Great film.

Caminante Nocturno - 2016-02-05

When this first aired, my sister called me up and told me to watch it and that it was actually happening. When I realized it wasn't and I called her back to angrily tell her that, she laughed at me.

kamlem - 2016-02-05

Your sister rocks!

I remember watching this - boy, way to be dicks, aliens.
