I'm rootin' for Anomolisa even though I haven't seen it yet. The only one I've seen out of these is Inside Out, which is really good too but it's kind of just Herman's Head with a Pixar Twist.

I really hope Inside Out doesn't win. It's one of my least favorite Pixar films. The only one of those I've seen thus far is When Marnie Was There. Great film, and as far as we know may be the last Studio Ghibli film ever.

Aw shit my sarcasm came back to bite me in the ass! I just watched World of Tomorrow on Netflix and Ridiculous 6 came up on autoplay. Fuck.

It's one of the most beautiful things I've ever seen. The museum I used to go to has (I believe) the oldest Von Hagens installation at least in North America which is a room full of plastinicized fetuses. I don't remember it much as a kid because I wanted to see the dinosaurs but I went back as an adult and I was about ready to pass out looking at it while kids were just playing around me. Same thing happened when his Bodyworlds exhibit came through. In a way it made me stop fearing the dark unknown, seeing kids at play around fetuses that were never born and other such things, like bodies doing Tony Hawk Skateboarder moves with the kids saying "who's that?" I dunno, I'm kinda speechless but that's my review.

I just want to rant, cause some folks might think "one of my least favorite Pixar films" might mean "pretty good", but no, it sucked. Inside Out was a painfully boring experience. It's probably the movie I regret seeing the most last year. Why is Pixar so immune to criticism? Their shittiest movies get heaped with praise. It's like critics and fans just instantly give them a thumbs up no matter what. Inside Out sucked, Finding Nemo sucked, of course the Cars films suck, Monster U sucked. Feel free to add to the list.

But I hated Ratatouille. I don't know why, it just bored the shit out of me. Not even Patton Oswalt could make that the slightest bit interesting to me.

I haven't seen the Cars (although I know the world of Cars all too well), but tend to catch the rest here and there, and honestly the only one I really really loved was Wall-E. And that include Up! Sorry Up, making me cry for 15 minutes doesn't substitute for a CGI Baron Von Munchausen the rest of the time; it's like a break-up in reverse. But as Levar once said, don't take my word for it. I also liked Finding Nemo though because I lived with an Abyssinian cat named Nemo who was a failed show-cat, so we'd always say "we found you" so that's a positive association. Later he was found dead in Tennessee because someone was going around putting antifreze in peoples' bowls that they left for their outside cats. I couldn't make it to the funeral but the owner came to my wedding. Anyway that's what I think about when I think about Finding Nemo. As for Inside Out, I probably wouldn't have paid for it: I get paid shit myself but one of the cool things is a free pass to movies, so I've seen Inside Out at least 4 times and Star Wars 5 now.. the list goes on. I sort of learn not to care, but Inside Out was pretty cute.

Whoops read your rant before I saw your post! Marnie's a Ghibli? Oh shit! Now I'm torn and sad that only one of these can win. I wish I had the same feelings for best animated film as I do for best real film, but go Mad Max and kick some Oscar ass! But Carol was the movie of the year, animated or otherwise IMO. So flying fucks all around!

Up was really overrated. It's popular among 30 somethings because the first 15 minutes was sad, but nobody talks about the rest of the film because it was completely forgettable. I saw it in the theatre, and during the iconic opening, I heard several kids asking their parents what was going on. It didn't even make sense to the core audience of the film.

Yeah, in the Disney movies I grew up with, characters never died, not even the bad ones. They just fell down a long ways and probably splashed into the river, swam to shore and decided to make some changes in their lives, I dunno. My grandpa died when I was about 3, and my other grandpa when I was 9, and I still hadn't really grasped the concept that this would happen to those I loved who I saw on a daily basis.

That being said, if you want that experience done in a much better way than even Up could do, watch World of Tomorrow like ROUS mentioned. Not gonna spoil anything (it's only 16 minutes) but I was like "Yep! This is how you do it if you're a kid." I still liked Wonderful Day and his old shorts that are all over poetv more I guess, but give this guy an oscar!

Are people still harping on that 90's nostalgia "Herman's Head did it first" nonsense? As if a mediocre three-season Fox sitcom would be the first fictional work to ever use the concept of personified emotions. Hell, Disney used the idea as the basis for a cartoon called Reason and Emotion way back in the 40's.

But I'm afraid I can't join this "look, Internet, I'm too good to enjoy Pixar now" circlejerk, because I thought Inside Out was fantastic, fascinatingly well thought out, and surprisingly gutsy in the way its story embraces sadness as essential to a full life. The fact that the "happy" character, while only meaning well, is the closest the movie has to a villain, is a brilliant bit of writing.

But okay, if we're going to bitch about Pixar, Monsters Inc is painfully overrated and Up, while not a bad movie, is stuffed with filler sequences that drag it down considerably.

I love Pixar films. Just not the ones I listed. I couldn't enjoy Inside Out mainly cause the main characters were annoying. Almost as annoying as the damn Ellen fish.

Ok you did not just diss Ellen fish. You can diss Jeff Foxworthy as a car. You can diss Ed Asner as Ed Asner and the boring old man villain no one cares about. You can especially diss Herman's Head.

But Ellen fish is rad. You can find her soon! Ellen was genuinely funny in that role, to the point where I would really describe it as one of the best comedic voice performances since Robin Williams in Aladdin.

re: When Marnie Was There I thought this was a complete surprise even for a Ghibli film. It was slower than most of their films, and I was genuinely surprised in a good way. I thought the themes of anxiety, loss and depression were handled really well and woven into a story that eventually turned into one of healing.

It's a shame it didn't do well at the box office. It reminded me of Up On Poppy Hill in tone and pacing. Both of them have fantastical elements on a much lesser scale than their other films, and focus much more on character. But apparently Miyazaki didn't direct it. The last thing he did was The Wind Rises.

I am really looking forward to Anomolisa.

Have you seen Whisper of the Heart? It's my favorite Ghibli film, and it runs a bit slower like those.

I'm also surprised that they didn't nominate a QT Film simply because it was a QT film. I saw it. I liked it too! But that takes balls for the biggest jerkoff contest in hollywood to not nominate it.

This looks like really innovative animation using a much lower budget than its American counterparts. That is not easy to do. Especially when trying to layer a film with a child character with darker themes.
