I don't know, it sure is a mystery. Probably the same things that went through the minds of smart, thoughtful, caring people who voted for Clinton, Gore, Kerry, and Obama - whatever those things may have been!

Mr Wildcat - that's most likely because Trump gets the most media exposure, and is evidently the candidate favoured by his fellow oligarchs. You don't really think your Republican friends have a say in who heads their party, do you?

Trump's net worth is 4.5 billion, I'm sure all the other republican fat cats would love to have a president with that much proverbial dick to swang.

As Zizek says, rather than wagging our fingers at the the working-class whites who are attracted to right-wing populism, we would be better off figuring out what drove them them away from western liberalism. Remember, many of them would have been Wobbly-style socialists a century ago, but they were dumped overboard by the Democrats decades ago and the Republican establishment never bothered to throw them a line. Trump is probably the first candidate since Perot to address their very real class concerns without covering it in a thick layer of social criticism that inevitably ends up labeling them sour-grapes 'bitter clingers' at best or the worst oppressors the world has ever known at worst.

@Homer : The party establishment ( and by extension the oligarchy ) don't care much for Don, judging by the panic coming from that quarter. Old money people don't like him one bit. Why don't you ask your blue blooded hounds about it. We're fishing for supporters here.

@Void : All true, but it's the odd specifics of Donald Trump and some kind of populist revolt in the party. The guy is a rich Manhattan developer. This is a populist? You ever been to the isle of M? It's a job just to get those fuckers to cross the river. Forget about flyover country. Yet, here we are.

Void: What "very real class concerns" has he addressed? His main complaints are on "enemies of freedom", which he clearly identifies with minorities. His "integrity" is claimed because he won't be bought by other billionaires, but that's moot when he's already a corrupt billionaire. And considering how easy it is for him to license his name, I call bullshit on him having any integrity on that front.

Keep in mind that I think Trump is a con man, but he's the only candidate who's talking about the damage that free trade did to our manufacturing capability. Perot talked about the 'sucking sound' as it was happening and Trump is talking about the void that was left behind after the damage was done. Since factory work used to be the pathway to economic freedom for working-class whites, his hollow promise to do his best to bring manufacturing back to America resonates heavily with them. He also talks about deporting illegal aliens, who are their main economic rivals.

It could be argued that Sanders gives lip service to economic inequality, but he does it in a very limp-wristed way, and it's tainted by the disdain that middle-class liberals have for working-class whites. Sanders' schtick is to blame everything on the 'Too-Big-to-Fails' while saying that taking more money from rich people and redistributing it will fix everything. Unlike Trump, he never touches on the failure of free trade/globalism to ensure prosperity for the working class. His talk of free college (as if America needs even more unemployed and underemployed college graduates) is meant to appeal to the mostly middle-class base of the Democrat party.

He's an actor. He's fucking with people; same as he's been doing for decades, it's what he does.

Whether he's "serious" or not depends on what angle you want to look at it from. The point of this cool dance number is to generate controversy and get people - people like you and I, as of right this very moment - talking about him, thinking about him, burning his image into their minds and the minds of all their friends. I don't doubt for a minute that D-Dawg is totally serious about that!
