Probably their best episode.

Spaceman Africa - 2015-12-06

This would have been a really good episode had Max Landis not been there.

EvilHomer - 2015-12-06

Jumped the shark AND sold out.

I don't know anything about Max Landis, just that he stole my haircut and RLM has made fun of him before, but his Wikipedia article mentions that he went to a"therapeutic boarding school in New England". Does anyone know which one it was? I'm wondering if it was Marvelwood. My dad had his first real teaching gig there, and Max certainly seems like the kind of batshit trustafarian weirdo who'd wind up there.

EvilHomer - 2015-12-06

(for those of you who aren't hep to the lingo, "therapeutic boarding school" is the polite euphemism for reform schools geared specifically towards teenagers too rich to be sent to group homes, juvie, or JobCorps. These places are structured somewhat like "normal" elite New England prep schools (Andover, Deerfield, Loomis etc), except the work is far easier and all the kids matriculated there are either criminals and/or insane. It's a great source of shame for the 1% to send their children to reform school, hence why they don't often advertise their services.

Marvelwood is probably the most prestigious of those places here in New England, best known because the former headmaster went insane and murdered a bunch of kids.)

I don't really get the hate for Max Landis

StanleyPain - 2015-12-06

Mostly that he's an arrogant douche that shrivels into a little pile of dust bunnies and hides when anyone calls him out on his shit.

At least when RLM had Len Kabasinski on he defended his own work in a humorous way instead of "OH GEE GUYZ CANT WE BE FRIENDS WHEN I SAID THE AUDIENCE WERE IDIOTS I DIDN'T MEAN THAT LITERALLY PLEASE LOVE ME AND BRILLIANT UNDERRATED WRITING!"

somedongus - 2015-12-06

Hey, how can you hate on a dude who's besties with Macauley Culkin's reanimated corpse?

Bort - 2015-12-06

I find Max Landis irritating just as I do any other smug guy with dumb opinions who loves to hear himself talk. If he toned down the smugness I could merely disagree with him.

Spaceman Africa - 2015-12-06

He spent most of this video yelling and saying riffs that made the other audibly groan. You could notice Jay's visible contempt for him.

Bort - 2015-12-06

Oh good, I'm glad I didn't watch this.

HarrietTubmanPI - 2015-12-06

I saw the one on one interview with Max Landis that RLM posted a few weeks ago. Max does look smug and seems to act like he knows it all in this video. But in the interview, you can see that he knows more about movies than you guys give him credit for. In the interview, nearly everything he said was true - and explains a lot about what's wrong with Hollywood today. Watch the interview, then come back here.

Spit Spingola - 2015-12-06

Eh...I liked his Death of Superman video on youtube. It's not too different from the stuff RLM does. Them getting together to watch three terrible movies in a row is a decent end result of them calling him out for being whiny on twitter.

infinite zest - 2015-12-07

Yeah Harriet Tubman's right. And I saw Chronicle kind of randomly and it's actually really good for what it is. And I didn't see American Ultra (just like the rest of the world, zing) but the trailers did make it look pretty original in a sea of graphic novel adaptations and shit.

And as far as the "son of a director" silver spoon bullshit, that's pretty much everybody in hollywood these days. I was reading an interview with Jeff Bridges the other day where he was talking about getting autocast in his dad's movies pretty much because Beau wanted parts for his kids. It's just how it works. Plus I think it's cool that he's fine with RLM shitting all over him.

Bort - 2015-12-07

"Eh...I liked his Death of Superman video on youtube."

Okay, you called me out: my particular axe to grind started with his opinions on Superman (so yeah, my sense of priorities is JUST FINE). He says in that DoS video that nobody gives a shit about Superman and even if you think you do you really don't ... hey fuck you Landis, maybe I actually do like the character when he's done well. Then in another video he says that he DOES care about Superman, and what makes Superman special is that he's indestructible and therefore he is "absolved of" (by which I think he means "exempt from") fear and greed ... no you idiot, the point of Superman is that he's entirely capable of human weakness, but you give him all the power in the world and still he wants nothing more than to make sure others are happy.

Last time someone had this much trouble understanding Superman, he was telling Kevin Smith to include a scene where Superman fights a giant spider.

infinite zest - 2015-12-07

Also the end, at least starting at 45:00 in is great. Someone mentioned a while back that Mike appears visibly bored with these things now, and maybe these hollywood connections could mean that some of their screenplay ideas could become actual things and not just beer-talk. I'd see that.

BillLumbergh - 2015-12-07

i just love how butthurt Bort is about some guy misunderstanding superman

Bort - 2015-12-07

Glad I could earn your stars!

Sexy Duck Cop - 2016-07-08

Max Landis seems like a nice guy having fun with a group of people he respected before he met on account of their funny, insightful, and thoughtful online videos, but also wanted to befriend in person. It was probably pretty awkward given that all of RLM has probably known each other since childhood and he was the new guy, but they all seemed to get along pretty well and that makes me happy.

tl;dr FUCK YOU MAX LANDIS

Marlon Brawndo - 2019-05-04

I've never heard of Neil Breen before today and I think it's an amazing find. He truly is the rare Ed Wood like director whose mixture of talentlessness and narcissism make for amazingly bad but amazingly watchable movies.
