Well I have to say, when I was learning geography there were only four oceans; the Southern Ocean didn't exist when I was a kid (it was just the southernmost portions of the Atlantic, Pacific, and Indian Oceans). I would have gotten the buzzer too.

infinite zest - 2015-12-01

Wow me too. I was like "what the fuck is Southern Ocean?" Looks like it was created in 2000, which was the year I graduated from high school and pretty much the last time I'd think about Geography, but it's weird that in 15 years I wouldn't have heard about something that historically significant somewhere. Thanks WSHH!

jfcaron_ca - 2015-12-01

The most "official" definition of the oceans (from the International Hydrographic Organization) does not include a 5th Southern Ocean, but many other organizations do use the term. Answering only Pac/Alt/Ind/Arc should be a perfectly valid answer.

So basically the buzzer lacks nuance, as buzzers often do.

Redford - 2015-12-01

I personally can't remember the names of all the oceans off the top of my head because that stopped getting drilled into my head after high school.

Basically, I have near-photographic memory for things that manage to get inserted into my long-term memory, but my short term memory is TERRIBLE. I struggle to remember phone numbers on a daily basis.

I am fairly certain this does not mean I am stupid.

Bort - 2015-12-01

I'm perfectly fine with the notion that a person doesn't remember everything that was taught in school; most of it really doesn't come up in everyday use, so a vast amount of it is going to get flushed in favor of more relevant information.

(I don't buy the argument that "... therefore they shouldn't be wasting our time with all that information". School doesn't know what you're going to need later, so all they can do is try to put as much information in your head as possible so you'll at least have some framework. Would you even know what Delaware is if you hadn't heard about it in school? I'm not sure I would; it simply never comes up in my life. But I'm nevertheless glad they taught me.)

Part of this video is, they can't even gauge how far off they are. The Black Sea isn't an ocean and there's sort of a hint in the name.

@Redford
Yes, being able to spout random pointless trivia has no benefit and demonstrates nothing but a lack of ignorance of pointless trivia.
Thats the kind of stuff you can look up in an instant if necessary.
I get paid for my intelligence and I dont remember details. One cant possibly remember them all, better to just remember the jist of things, the most salient points and principles which will also allow you to look up the details if needed.

I wouldnt have been able to answer this question, though I am aware there are some large bodies of water present on the earths surface.
The decision of which ocean is which and their names seems quite arbitrary also, so one could only identify them correctly through rote learning and not some underlying logic. Which ocean is which definitely falls into the dont bother remembering category for me.

bawbag - 2015-12-01

@Redford

Same.

CIWB - 2015-12-01

But surely you know what the two major oceans are named, right? The space on a map between North America and Europe is called ________? C'mon.

infinite zest - 2015-12-01

FishTown USA!

Yeah I have that problem with names. I meet a stranger at the coffee shop and we become quick friends and shoot the shit for a little while, and then I see them again and they're like "hey IZ (or whatever my real name is)" and I can't remember theirs' even though I recognize the face. I can't even remember the names of 75% of people I've slept with. But I always remember more complex things like what people order, where they work, things like that.

bawbag - 2015-12-01

@CIWB

'The North Sea Expansion pak'

EvilHomer - 2015-12-01

I remember the names of the oceans, but the Southern is bullshit, and I don't feel any better at (or about) life for knowing the other four by heart.

betabox - 2015-12-01

Perhaps being able to converse with people in the real world about actual things that happen *without getting out your fucking "smart" phone* is a good reason to clutter your head with a few facts. Little things like oceans, continents, and states of matter.

I know it's hard and stuff, but it might make you a less worthless person.

EvilHomer - 2015-12-01

How often does the subject of the Four (or Five) Oceans come up in your conversations, Mr Betabox?

baleen - 2015-12-02

I am a whale.

The Mothership - 2016-07-05

Oh god betabox you're sooooo old and I sooooo agree with every word you said.

Really.

chumbucket - 2015-12-01

WSHH upgrading from phone cameras held upright.

Meerkat - 2015-12-01

Atlantic, Pacific, Balsamic and Indian. Four. There are only four oceans.

Meerkat - 2015-12-01

Oh shit I forgot Bulimic.

That guy - 2015-12-01

I'm surprised that Baltic came up multiple times actually, whether it is or isn't an ocean. That's hard for anybody to find on a map; I would've expected answers like "American Ocean" or "Russian Sea" before Baltic

EvilHomer - 2015-12-01

Hundreds, possibly thousands, of hours spent playing EU and CK have drilled every section of the Baltic into my head.

EvilHomer - 2015-12-01

In fact, I am probably more familiar with the Baltic than any other sea, save perhaps the Mediterranean. I definitely like it more than the Mediterranean, too - the Baltic's not my favorite sea, but it's in my Top Ten.

Sanest Man Alive - 2015-12-01

Jesus H. Christ raped and left for thrice-dead, enough of the ocean pedantry.

Let's get back to the real topic of debate (such as it is): Is or is not Florida deserving of nuclear annihilation?

Keep your responses limited to one minute each

and GO!

ashtar. - 2015-12-01

Climate change will take care of it for us.

ashtar. - 2015-12-01

Although maybe we should do a preemptive strike to avoid Floridian refugees swarming our borders. Or, hell, give it to Mexico on the condition they put up a big fence.

yogarfield - 2015-12-02

Like lancing a troublesome sore on the unsightly wang of a nation, Ugently, Florida needs to go now.

infinite zest - 2015-12-02

I actually liked Ft. Lauderdale when I was down there; my ex won tickets to the Super Bowl, so some of that might have to do with the fact that, at 80 degrees fahrenheit, it was a good 120 degrees warmer than where we were coming from. I'm sure it gets nuts during Spring Break, but since this was the off-season it was just a bunch of interesting little shops, wildlife reserves, and old people driving Lamborghinis up and down the street. I'm sure the Spring Breakers come in and ruin the vibe, but It'd be like saying New Orleans should be nuked because of Mardis Gras. Plus the only touristy thing we did was visit the Hard Rock Bingo and Casino, since I'd never been to one, and we saw Anna Nicole Smith. She'd overdose in that very casino and die two days later.

Plus the people down there seem pretty laid back vs. the forced "politeness" I sometimes feel with people in the PNW; we were getting on the airplane back and I did the normal TSA stuff, forgot I had my lighter so I gave it to the TSA agent, as every other airport at the time was confiscating them. She was just like "well how're you gonna light your cigarette baby?" So I dunno, I've never been anywhere else down there so I can't speak for the state, but besides Portland, Eugene and Ashland the rest of Oregon would be a shitty place to live in too.

infinite zest - 2015-12-02

(oops one minute rule.. I think I typed that in about 2 minutes though. Thanks Mavis Beacon Teaches Typing!)

Gypsy_Dildo_Factory - 2016-07-01

Someone down the hall from me is from FL and the only time I talked to her she brought up how terrible their schools are (works as a mentor for HS students)

I learned them all and recite them but never heard of Northern and Southern Ocean. I learned Arctic and Antarctic Ocean, corroborate that with multiple various sources, and it goes into my dossier of events which add to the suspicion of an inter-dimensional event at some point in 1997.
WHere I am from, the Golden Globe Awards do not exist, and the convention for an angular measurement in 2D Cartesian space coordinate systems runs positive clockwise from 0 degrees at the 12:00 position, as opposed to positive counter-clockwise and 0/360 at the 3:00 position, as it is here.

Gypsy_Dildo_Factory - 2016-07-01

I spoke too fast. What's up with the coordinates and other things I'm dead sure of IDK
