Cool! I don't think this show's up my alley but I like the effort put into this song!

Also, why's everybody hating on "Africa" all the time? You wouldn't have your Bon Iver or the Other Guys Who Sound Like Bon Iver without it!

Binro the Heretic - 2015-10-19

"Africa" is the plain porridge of 1980s music. It's like you know you listened to music, but it doesn't give you the sensation of having listened to music.

There were a lot of other songs of a similar ilk around at the same time. "Eye in the Sky" by The Alan Parsons Project, "Magic" by Air Supply and "Sailing" by Christopher Cross come to mind. I think it was just luck of the draw that "Africa" came to be considered the epitome of early 1980s easy-listening adult contemporary.

Anyway, as with most music that people have a distaste for, it wasn't the music itself, but the fans. "Africa" and its bland misbegotten siblings were popular with proto-yuppies.

misterbuns: Cool! Do you mean they record everything next door or just the music? Did you get to see Will Forte when he did the rap from the second episode?

Gmork - 2015-10-20

Did you see Rob Lowe?! Where are the recording this?

infinite zest - 2015-10-20

Maybe it's just me. When I was a kid I was really into .MOD files that I got off BBSes, and two of my favorite files were Africa and Countdown. Neither file said who the artist was so I thought they were originals. I was also living in grunge city though so I didn't have much exposure to "classic" rock stations. It was fun to finally find out who they were, like sometime in college, after I'd taught myself to play them both on the piano.

infinite zest - 2015-10-20

(meant as reply to Binro).. yeah I'm curious too!

misterbuns - 2015-10-22

i was cutting a thing at Titmouse, the studio behind this.

misterbuns - 2015-10-22

records just means the recording session of VO

BHWW - 2015-10-19

I've been watching this and it's far better than I expected, the storylines go off in all sorts of bizarre little tangents that are far more satisfying and humorous than it simply being yet another case of a series (in any medium) that is centered around a doofus protagonist is incompetent and easily distracted. I mean, even considering Rob Lowe's character is an incompetent doofus who is easily distracted.

SolRo - 2015-10-20

first episode is a bit rough, but it improves

sasazuka - 2015-10-20

Yeah, that's what I've been thinking, every other episode so far was a big improvement, comedy-wise, over the pilot, which I found a little funnier on a re-watch (when I was more in tune with the tone of the comedy; same thing happened to me with BOB'S BURGERS) but the pilot was more "look at the style of this show! Patrick Nagel meets Jem and the Holograms! Also there's comedy too!" with the substance taking a back seat to the style.

It's like, I know MOONBEAM CITY is the off-brand version of ARCHER, but the off-brand can still be decent too. Like with the off-brand versions of Seven-Up, for example. Not as good but not the huge taste quality drop-off from real to off-brand as there is with the off-brand versions of Coca-Cola and Pepsi.

Gmork - 2015-10-20

I stuck with it, not disappointed. The less funny moments are not all clustered together and there are a lot of genuine moments that were either ad-libbed or created as a result of fucking around during a read.

I like things like that.

Just a minor serendipity: I went to this site to submit this video before I even knew we were doing Toto "Africa"-related videos week. It's really just a coincidence that I submitted this now.
