If there was some localized cell phone and wifi jamming device, just something that would spew out noise across the relevant frequencies maybe, I would be willing to put up with the dick cancer I'd eventually get from hiding it in my pants all the time.

SolRo - 2015-10-13

There is.

It's against the law to use one.

The Mothership - 2015-10-13

Ok, fine, they're illegal, but where do I fucking BUY one SolRo?

SolRo - 2015-10-13

look them up...they're illegal to use in a public space, not illegal to sell.

chumbucket - 2015-10-14

Every time a phone gets within range it gets stuck showing the smiling face of Bob Marley.

Gypsy_Dildo_Factory - 2015-10-14

Ashtar, Solro, are either of you on the POE FaceBook group?

I've been following the development of them since 1998. Too much to say about it here. even in summary. I'm also out of date, what's available now could be more sophisticated.... the problem with what you see (or I saw) even for something costing 0, its power output is too low to matter outside of weak signal areas. at all. Not even 1-foot away with 2 I tested. I unfortunately nearly got fired trying to bring them into work to see what they were even doing. I was about to but I won't talk about my own design but it's a far cry from the noise generator-amplifier circuit in everything I looked at. And INNEXPENSIVE AND HIGH POWER, sacrificing power efficiency and some unknown loss ouside the freq bands targeted. . ... In 1998 The 1st jammer was top-flight by an Israeli company for the defense market with that kind of price although they completely understood the difference when I was talking to them a bit about a business idea to sell them in the US for civillian security or whatever, movie theaters, and be able to keep one for myself. The legal issues are simply too draconian. I'd like to know what's up but don't have time and certainly won't by any unless there's something completely different that's got cred. I got my money back for the I bought (2001)

Gypsy_Dildo_Factory - 2015-10-14

^^^^ I reread that and realized it sounds like I'm making a sales pitch for my own merchandise. NO WAY. I have no merchandise. I have a cause, and found a way to put one in the hands of anyone who desires to understand a different kind of electronics. Long ago we adopted the battle-cry "BANZAI!! YOU GIZMO-GEEKS!!". And the movement become know as TechnoFascism. On this planet, someone needs to work the brakes on this disastrous superproduction that consumes resources including the intellectual. The spacestation will be 10000 times as big when a sweeping worldwide movement unseats all government and our convience devices will be non-profit and sensibly designed. Where once stood our nation's capitol, an enormous statue of Anubis with his jackal-like head, guarding his Hall of Two Truths

Oscar Wildcat - 2015-10-14

Well I think I speak for everyone when I say we could all get with that! So what's your circuit, Dil? I'd do it with spark gaps and a host of tuned elements to cover the band in question. And you?

memedumpster - 2015-10-14

I'm working on a secret NSA approved (thanks for the SDK, NSA dudes, you rock the secret fascist police cabana!) backdoor enabled cellphone killer that turns all phones into tracphones. When you go to use them for any reason, it drops the 4g signal to 1x and then refuses to connect to the Internet or make phone calls. The working title for it is "Verizon Wireless."

SolRo - 2015-10-14

I'm not on the Facebook thing, the other Poe-kids are mean to me!

Gypsy_Dildo_Factory - 2015-10-14

Nailed it on the spark gap! The circuit takes one of several COTS mass produced nearly disposable and very small HV sources, exxing out having to have that even made yourself (tiny modification). At about 1.2kV and some irregularity between every unit there is just some finesse in designing a well-tempered tunable spark gap that may be tweaked stealthily when on duty in front of the EYE. adjustments on the scale of thousandths of inches or "mils" as we like to call them. Following the rulebook keeping wires short and straight to the tantalum capacitors of the twin capacitor tank.
There's a twist now, nothing new exactly, but at these wavelengths the antennae** make up the inductor,*** there is no coil needed! Electrons "ring" back and forth between two opposing, copper antennae with sharpened ends. Or a better form, which there must be. Disposable film cameras with flashes you know are still widely made, you know, for quaint idiot wedding-parties it seems. They have different lenses, a rectangular parabolic reflector dish. They are as much a goldmine as a dry storage reactor "waste" keg. They roll along pushed by bulldozers, the fools made them round you see...

Gypsy_Dildo_Factory - 2015-10-14

Wifi is such a faulty tower. There are magnetrons ready and waiting to hit the 5.whatever GHz frequency band, with a smaller device! Here the FCC is working with us, it goes back to like 1952. Rather, Wifi went with the bands licensed for industrial and residential oven use. It shows what cowards we are that we're not coordinating attacks on the apple store, although I believe they are wise to keep merchandise away from the sales floor unlike best by. There is bitter intrigue around a 2012 patent where the Feds own the idea of daisy-chaining magnetrons with some fancy waveguide plumbing and an obvious addition of a solenoid coil to anyold magnetron so they can phase-lock. Why would the Air Force care about playing with microwave ovens?

Oscar Wildcat - 2015-10-15

Yes, that's the idea, but it's better to consider the antenna as a transmission line. It's what makes these circuit difficult in practice, there is only so much charge you can store on the antenna. Your tank cap could not be helping much in that regard, but it will keep the gap hot so that's a (somewhat)good thing.

Gypsy_Dildo_Factory - 2015-10-16

Yes, certainly. I managed to get at a way to easily make a good spark gap that works in the field, however a better antenna was where I stopped because while I have vague ideas about what might be tried, I didn't "get" dielectric antennas or really advanced antennas enough, so was going to wait until I maybe found something where someone directly or inadvertently did it themselves or did anything illuminating to me on the issue. Definitely more power is being broadcast than the small commercially available jammers and an EE master's thesis project thing that was published (which also just used a conventional sort of noise generator-amplifier semiconductor-based circuit)

Gypsy_Dildo_Factory - 2015-10-16

(and my phone wouldn't work but this was all a bunch of shi*t spread around on a table not so far as a little box with retracting antennas.)

Gypsy_Dildo_Factory - 2015-10-16

A shortwave radio set I have makes beeping noises at completely the wrong frequency when I send text messages. Thinking about this stuff as part voodoo is easier

infinite zest - 2015-10-13

5 for cute and making a good point, but this is how technology has always worked. Did anyone bitch when the Pentium came out and nothing worked well with a 486 anymore? Not really. They got a fucking Pentium. Any generation of iPhone you can use to get your porn on your lunchbreak and it still makes phonecalls so quit whining that there's something a little better than what you just spent your paycheck on a year ago. That just makes you sound like the people who got a 57 Chevy who already had a 56.

Binro the Heretic - 2015-10-14

My main beef with the iPhone and Apple products in general is the arbitrary changing of minor things to make previous generations of accessories incompatible.

They know they don't make a lot of money on the phone itself. The real money is in the stuff like docking/charging stations. If I pay good money for an officially licensed Apple stereo to plug my iPhone into so I can charge it and listen to the music I have stored on it, I shouldn't have to buy a totally new stereo every time they decide to make the charging slot a slightly different shape.

And what do I do with the old stereo? Nobody is going to want it because their new iPhone isn't going to fit it, either. It's just generating useless electronic waste and inconvenience in the name of profit.

infinite zest - 2015-10-14

That's a good point. I've always just used a Y connector that's hooked up to my stereo, and charge it on tmy laptop, so as long as I don't lose that thing I can listen to both or plug in a Discman from the 90s for the same audio out, but yeah it's super irritating if you use those things. I spent a good portion of the last 2 weeks trying to track down a certain sports-themed casing for a Galaxy for someone, primarily for the casing itself. Finally found one, and lo and behold it's for the same model number phone with "Alpha" in the front. Argh..

As far as the charging itself goes, that's not too hard if you have an older iPhone and lose your charger ompletely or something. At least where I am, 7-11s and other convenients stores sell the chargers with the wider slots still.

TeenerTot - 2015-10-14

What IZ said.
It's not a clever video for its point, but really cleverly done and those robots are so CUTE!!!

That guy - 2015-10-14

goddamn it zest, when you're dumb you're really stupid

There's a spectrum of tech making other tech obsolete.
When iphones go down because of Apple 'upgrades', that's totally fucking different from a 486 starting to suck, that's toward the deliberately pitch-black side of that spectrum.

Anyway, this short film is fantastic.
I'm really surprised to find even the main upload of it having so few views:
youtube.com/watch?v=InEnWwzCxcw
I was expecting 10x more at least

memedumpster - 2015-10-14

SOMEONE (no names) obviously never owned an HP 486.

Those things so were not created equal, not even close.

Gypsy_Dildo_Factory - 2015-10-14

People are clearly not complacent about this shit. Everything used to run on standardized, removable battery cells. For "Regular", Alkaline, NiCad, NimH. Lead acids sort of barely have a D-cell. Lithium ion has an incompatible cell voltage I suppose but they make shit now with the battery fused in with its own integrated little tricks to make it so when say your whatever thing can no longer hold a charge, you can't just surgically replace it with some generic cell. So the whole thing is trash except when plugged in hopefully. I'm not saying you can't fool the "no new battery" electronics, I actually don't know how much variety there is (that someone can become a master at revitalizing any laptop or phone, tablet when the battery fails or dies after x number of cycles) but it's evil anyway and disgustingly wasteful. It's not new like said here I know too, can think of examples of the identical kind of thing from 15 years ago at least s.a. the lamps in video projectors when they die. OEM replacement is 0 or something but it's just a lamp bulb in the end. Even to trick the projector with a different bulb is a chore and a half and you don't save enough for it to be worth it for most people. Recall going back to some really early LCD projectors, you just plopped them on top of an old-school transparency overhead projector. What a world, ey? What was I trying to make a point about... yeah nevermind. This shit is way out of had to the point that something interesting could happen whenever "the last straw" is

ashtar. - 2015-10-14

I like the cut of your jib.

Gmork - 2015-10-15

Pretending that only iPhones are responsible for this behavior and not all smartphones everywhere. People are even snobbier about their galaxy whatevers these days than any apple user.

That guy - 2015-10-15

Apple is top dog. The application to other companies can be readily imagined. Dumb objection to a great short.
