I thought "beta" people were those who willingly become subordinates to "alphas" in order to enjoy the benefits of being around the "in" crowd. Sort of like how remoras attach themselves to sharks so they can feed off the scraps of the prey and hook up with other remoras.
This guy seems to be talking about outcasts & loners.
