I just wish they'd stylized this a little bit.

My main issue with Harmony Korine isn't that his movies are bad, because they aren't. Most of them are pretty great in one way or another. It's just that it seems like nobody loves Harmony Korine movies more than Harmony Korine loves Harmony Korine movies, and it comes across in Harmony Korine's movies.

infinite zest - 2015-08-30

This was actually my favorite Korine movie. It's the only one that felt like an actual plot-driven movie and not like a staged documentary where something eventually happens. I mean, there's plenty of scenes in Gummo and Julian Donkey Boy that I'll never forget, but for the life of me I can't think of how they ended without looking it up.

If I recall, Spring Breakers did badly because it was advertised as sort of an MTV2 "Good Girls Gone Bad" type of movie, with a big emphasis on the wub wub music and the tits and the ass, and most people were just confused because they didn't know Harmony Korine from Michael Bay.

Old_Zircon - 2015-08-30

I think I like Gummo more, and Julian Donkey Boy would be better if they trimmed out 15 or 20 minutes, but this was right up there. I put off watching it for quite a while but it ended up being just what I'd hoped.

I was told by a friend that this movie was important, that I must see it because it spoke to a cultural moment, an important cultural moment, or an empty moment, or something, and that I would understand modern American better for it, and be better for it, and that it was a good movie and an ironic and a smart movie, and a colourful movie, and a stylish movie, and that the acting was bad but ha-ha, and the music was bad but ha-ha, and the story was no story but ha-ha, and James Franco plays a white rapper and isn't that just exactly what James Franco would do?

I got to exactly this scene and turned it off. This movie sucks. I haven't seen anything else by Harmony Korine. Maybe if you already like Harmony Korine movies you'll give this one a brand pass, but I've been sent back in time from the future to tell you this movie isn't worthy of any of you.

could you tell the numbers for Fridays' Superball while you;re at it?

Two Jar Slave - 2015-08-30

My mission was very specific.

If you haven't seen Korine's other movies (or have and didn't like them) then definitely save your time and watch or do something else, or watch Gummo, Kids and Julian Donkey Boy first. Without those as context it wouldn't make much sense really. As for Franco's character, I've unfortunately known many real life people who make Franco's character look like a watered down caricature of a real drug dealer. As for this song, c'mon. They're like 15 year old Disney Channel girls. Would the scene have been better if he played Bob Dylan instead?

Two Jar Slave - 2015-08-30

>>Would the scene have been better if he played Bob Dylan instead?

It would not have been. And thank you for giving me the opportunity to say: fuck Bob Dylan for most of the same reasons as Spring Breakers.

infinite zest - 2015-08-31

Eh.. you and your friend aren't alone. When I saw it in theatres I was surprised that it was only playing at the big mall theatres, unlike the rest of Korine's output which was more "exclusive engagement" type stuff at the little arthouse cinema. So it was met with a whole bunch of tweens, and possibly fans of Korine. The former crowd was just confused and most left early, and the fans started laughing when this scene came on. And that's fine. It's not supposed to be a serious or emotional scene, but you can make it one, or just laugh. Is it any different than trying to watch Natural Born Killers again and feeling trapped in Trent Reznor's industrial 90s?

But if you're already on this website, it's kind of de trop because you see things like this all the time on here. So I dunno. Was it worth 7.50? Probably not. Is Korine the most 90s thing in indie film next to Kevin Smith? Probably yes. Should you torrent this movie? Probably yes. Should you delete other stuff that you like if your hard drive is full to download it? Probably not.

Old_Zircon - 2015-08-31

Don't listen to IZ re: Kids. Kids was terrible.

Old_Zircon - 2015-08-31

Also I think the use of Britney Spears as a recurring motif is completely central to Korine's criticism of the way materialistic aspirationalism in American pop culture twists the human desire for emotional connection into the compulsion to consume for the sake of consumption that has been propping up Western capitalism for the past 50-60 years (at least).

Whether or not it works is debatable but I don't think you could take it out.

EvilHomer - 2015-08-31

Do 15 year old girls listen to Britney Spears anymore? It's been, like, fifteen years since the peak of her career. She's now as ancient as Madonna had been when Britney was coming up.

Assuming your theory is correct, IZ, then this scene would have worked better if James Franco were playing Taylor Swift or Ariana Grande.

straight from the pony's mouth,

"I like her music! I think it’s like perfect pop music. That song "Everytime" — I was always taken by that song. It has this real kind of beauty and airlessness and this haunting kind of morose lullaby effect and underneath it there’s some type of hardcore aggression and menace that was really connected to the film in the way that the film deals with the culture of surfaces, this candy-coated neon haze reality. Underneath it, there’s this subtext and feeling of this kind of darkness. It was a connection I felt."[66]

I live pretty close to a college and it's that time of year when school's starting, and I hear the orientation parties and such, and it's still old J Lo and Britney Spears from when I was a freshman 18 years ago, which means they were not even born yet for the popular hits of the day when I was 14 or so.. it's weird because when I was a kid there wasn't much in the way of nostalgia: the "cool kids" might have liked rock from the 70s, but in general people were listening to pop music in the present. Maybe it's the Internet and easy access to music that caused this shift.

infinite zest - 2015-08-31

As for Kids, I mostly liked the soundtrack, mostly because I was into Lou Barlow and Daniel Johnston and stuff, but also because I could relate because the kids were pretty much my age and we were doing a lot of the same things (without the tragic parts.) I saw it again in my late 20s and it aged like any 90s movie. Hard to say if Spring Breakers would've had the same impact on me if I was 15 when I saw it, but I think of it as the unofficial sequel to Kids.

Old_Zircon - 2015-08-31

The problem with Kids is Harmony Korine didn't direct and I think a good 90% of what makes his movies work is that he has such a good eye, especially the way he uses depth of field and light. His movies look so good that it's easy to forgive some of his excesses as a writer/director.

infinite zest - 2015-08-31

Yeah.. I dunno if you saw Clark's follow up, Bully, but that's what happens without at least an interesting cast of characters. But also I was 13 so I sort of watched it for the teen boobs too.. can't lie about that..
