I love how the same actor played Kevin, Mr. Demartino, Mr. O'Neill (the wuss) and Upchuck.

Sanest Man Alive - 2015-08-29

Professional, guild-sanctioned voice acting: it's nepotastic!

fluffy - 2015-08-30

More like budgetary constraints, AMIRITE

Sanest Man Alive - 2015-08-30

I kid, really; I figured Kevin and Mr. D were the same guy, and O'Niel and Upchuck were the same guy, but didn't realize they were ALL coming out of one mouth. That's pretty good range.

Bort - 2015-08-30

Helen Morgendorffer, Jane Lane, and Quinn Morgendorffer were all voiced by Wendy Hoopes. I'm impressed.

I miss "Daria" but the show had to run its course, same as high school does. A lot of folks don't like how the show got in its final season (Daria was less of a hostile outsider / she wrestled with the same issues everyone else did), but that would mean Daria not growing as a person, which would kind of make her even more broken than everyone else.

I can tell Joey, Jamie, and Jeffie apart. Yeah bitches, I'm THAT good.

Sanest Man Alive - 2015-08-30

That was the neat thing about Daria, though; she could be sarcastic as hell, and it's easy to to walk away just thinking she's some edgy, 2cool4u outsider bitch (heck, there was even an episode, "Misery Chick" that addressed that), but she was actually on decent terms with most of her class, even the dumb football player and his airhead cheerleader gf, which are the most common stereotypes to be set up as obnoxious bullies of the downtrodden. That was kind of a breath of fresh air when I was a teen, having been previously inundated with 80's "dork beats the jock and wins the girl" movies.

Bort - 2016-08-29

The 80s were the worst. The 90s at least came with a message I can deal with: you may not come out on top and you may not get the super-hot girl and maybe her handsome boyfriend isn't a monster after all ... but you don't need all that to do all right.

I grew up in the 80s in a suburb so Republican the McCains and Romneys are guaranteed to hold rallies there.

yogarfield - 2015-08-30

So wait, was this show funny?

BHWW - 2015-08-30

It was, but a bunch of the people who seriously saw themselves as too smart for the room, why must I be surrounded by sheeple, etc. glommed on to the show - especially the sort of people who never grew out of that high school edgy outsider mindset.

That and as I recall from skimming the newgroup and forums years ago, there was a certain subset of Daria fans who were "older" gentlemen who were a little *too* enthusiastic about being able to discuss issues with all of the nice young independent-minded women who were fans of the show and I'm not suggesting these particular fellows were all creepers but...

My favorite example of Daria fan kookiness was coming across on a some TV-related forum a fellow's handwringing, hyperbole-laden, borderline weepy rant about the inevitable backlash against Daria that was bound to come in the wake of Harris and Klebold's rampage because Daria was an outsider who work dark clothes and would unfairly be a major target of blame, which seemed to be far more upsetting to him than the events at Columbine.

That this massive backlash he had predicted did not occur did not seem to dissuade him from making this argument again and again.

yogarfield - 2015-08-31

Wow. Cheers, thanks for the rundown.

Rodents of Unusual Size - 2015-08-31

does anyone remember that epic fanfic someone posted on poe red about how Daria became a special needs advocate and led a parade for autistic people through the town?

BHWW - 2015-09-01

I think you mean this one, RoUS, by one Peter Guerin, who it seemed had some, er, issues.

https://www.fanfiction.net/s/994/1/Triumph-of-the-Retart

Triumph of the 'Retart', he insists on writing it 'Retart'. The fanfic is notable for, besides having Rage Against the Machine show up, Guerin's obsession with the minutiae of a school election everyone takes seriously, and members of the Fashion Club behaving like a bunch of snarling bigots who will resort to arranging violent attacks on people in order to prevent a Special Ed student from running for school president. And that guy from Beavis and Butthead, Todd, showing up as a hired thug willing to do whatever it takes to eliminate this kid, who also falls for Daria and she him and they have a sex scene.

It's just awful, but fascinatingly awful, with all of the author's issues and obsessions on blatant display.

BHWW - 2015-09-01

Plus, this is how that parade starts, the Special Ed students are meeting with other people because their fearless leader who was going to fight for their rights, was randomly killed off by a nut with a bomb, and there's a black minister who was a friend of the family and it's just...

"That day, Daria and Jane did stop by Alicia's class. Andrew, who also had that period free, was also there. Both Alicia and Nathan were in front of the class.

"I know we have suffered such a terrible loss in the death of David," Alicia said, "but we must not let this dream of his die. Jodie Landon, who now is acting president once again, is calling for another election. We must find someone to run for the office and finish what David started."

Suddenly, Sandi burst in.

"Sandi," Daria said, "what the Hell are you doing here?"

"I'm free on bail, remember?," Sandi said. "I just want to tell all you retarts that I'm going to run for Student Government President again. And this time, I'm warning all of you, if even one of you decide to run against me, you will live to regret it!" She made a cutting motion with her finger across her throat, and left.

The students were afraid for their lives. Some began to weep."

"Nathan knew he needed to bolster their spirits. He spoke in his loud, clear baritone voice:

"Fear not, everyone! He who rules from above will not suffer any harm on you! He knows the end from the beginning! He sits in judgment in his throne! If God is for us, who can be against us! Fear not those who can only kill the body but not the spirit! David has taken you to the Promised Land, but like Moses, did not cross over. Now we must find a Joshua to take us over the Jordan!"

He then looked at Andrew and said, "Andrew, you will run for Student Government President and finish what David started. We have only the bonds of slavery to lose and everything to gain!"

"I now want to sing a song of hope to you. As some of you know, I belong to the local chapter of the NAACP. Our organization's official song is called 'Lift Ev'ry Voice and Sing.'. It reflects our group's goals for equality of the races. I think it should be a song for our fight for freedom as well."

Nathan cleared his throat and then began to sing:

"Lift ev'ry voice and sing,/Till earth and heaven ring,/Ring with the harmonies of liberty. . ."

Suddenly, the students began to join in; even Daria and Jane joined in:

"Let our rejoicing rise high as the list'ning skies,/Let it resound load as the rolling sea."

The students got out of their seats and headed out of the door, still singing:

"Sing a song full of the faith that the dark past has taught us;/Sing a song full of the hope that the present has brought us;/Facing the rising sun of our new day begun,/Let us march until victory is won."

The procession was headed down the Ghetto, and soon the other Special Education classes there emptied and went down the hall. The second verse was begun:

"Stony the road we trod,/Bitter the chast'ning rod,/Fell in the days when hope unborn had died. . ."

Sandi saw what was going on. "You can't leave the Ghetto during class!," she said.

"And what are you going to do about it?," Daria said, "tell on all of us?"

Sandi ran toward Ms. Li's office. The singing continued:

"Yet with a steady beat,/Have not our weary feet/Come to the place for which our forefathers sighed?"

Suddenly, more students joined them, along with some teachers. The second verse continued:

"We have come over a way that with tears has been watered;/We have come, treading our path thru' the blood of the slaughtered,/Out from the gloomy past, till now we stand at last/Where the white gleam of our bright star is cast."

Ms. Li came out and stood there, saying, "And where do you think you're going?"

"To get a petition form for Andrew," Daria said.

"All of you go back to your classes at once, of face suspension!," Ms. Li said.

"You can't suspend all of us!," Jane said in defiance.

"As for you teachers, you will report back as well, or face possible proceedings!," Ms. Li added.

"You can't touch us, Ms. Li," Nathan said, "we've got tenure!"

Ms. Li got mad. Nathan led the group in singing the last verse:

"God of our weary years,/God of our silent tears,/Thou who has brought us thus far on our way. . ."

"You will not get away with this!," Ms. Li warned, "Federal Government or no Federal Government!"

"Just watch us!," Daria shot back. The singing continued:

"Thou who hast by Thy might,/Led us into the light,/Keep us forever in the path we pray."

Sandi was shocked to see Quinn among them.

"Quinn, you traitor!," she said, "give this up now and we might just let you back in!"

"No thanks," Quinn replied, "I don't want to be associated with bigots!"

Quinn rejoined the others as they finished the song:

"Lest our feet stray from the places, our God, where we met Thee,/Lest our hearts, drunk with the wine of the world, we forget Thee;/Shadowed beneath Thy hand,/May we forever stand,/True to our God, true to our native land."

The group then went into the general office to pick up the application."

That was amazing

yogarfield - 2015-08-30

holy shit yes

BiggerJ - 2015-08-30

1:03 - Holy Jesus FUCK.

infinite zest - 2015-08-30

My ex was obsessed with Daria so I went along with it, and her love of the band Cake, all that shit that came along with it.. in a lot of ways I could relate since I was transferred around and was pretty much friends with my LSD guy and nobody else at high school, making friends at skate park and shit while my older brother went to some Ivy League, etc. but I never liked this show. I always thought a Stewart (or even Todd) B&B spinoff would've been better. But then again I hated Ghost World too.

Also I didn't like the animation. It was kind of the start of that shitty Flash style animation like Johnny Test And All The Rest.

gravelstudios - 2015-08-30

My mom was a huge Daria fan. She has the DVD boxed set. I have fond memories of it being on the TV all the time in the background for a while, but I tried to watch it by myself and it just wasn't the same.

Old_Zircon - 2015-08-30

Ghost World the comic is great, I just reread it a month ago and it's still good. Movie was OK but nothing special.

Old_Zircon - 2015-08-30

Daria I never got in to. I'd already burned out on Beavis and Butthead (other than the video commentary, which was always solid, it kind o fell apart in season 5) and the art style was and is terrible but I should give it a chance. The trouble with Beavis and Butthead by that point, though, was that it started to drift more and more in to being a show where the audience was supposed to kind of empathize with them.

Old_Zircon - 2015-08-30

I guess my oncern then and now is that Daria was taking that and running with it, when in my opinion its treatment of the character should have been more satirical, like the peak of B&B around seasons 2-3 when it was really a show about two unpleasant, stupid kids doing unpleasant stupid things. I kind of feel like Daria should have been poking fun at the characters ore than it seemed to be doing in the bits of I I've seen over the years.

fluffy - 2015-08-30

Daria was hand-drawn.

Shoebox Joe - 2015-08-31

Watching this really made me hate DeMartino's character design. Everything else is fine, but damn does that thing scream "Here's the hook, you fucking sad, angry delinquent fucks."
