I thought this exchange took place with Lisa.

That's not how I remember it.

A lot of people hated this episode, but I loved it; as an irredeemable dork myself, I felt that this one joke alone was enough to turn the episode into a classic.

There were still a lot of good episodes and jokes in S11: there were still places in the world they hadn't been, and new activities or shenanigans. I really did think that the Behind The Laughter episode was a pretty obvious signal that S12 would be the last though, with the joke about "The Simpsons Go To Delaware." Alas..

I missed that line somehow the first time around.

I had to look up 'Rashomon' to get that it's a good joke.

EvilHomer - 2015-08-26

SolRo - 'Rashomon' is a film by the famous Japanese director, Akira Kurosawa. The film's central theme is memory and perception; 'Rashomon' is about a murder trial, the events of which are recounted by four different narrators, each of whom remembers the murder in very different, sometimes contradictory, ways.

When Marge tells Homer "you liked Rashomon", and Homer replies "that's not how I remember it", the two of them are playing out their own condensed version of 'Rashomon'. That is why the joke is funny!

It is a pretty subtle joke, however, and the viewing audience probably wouldn't get it unless they'd watched 'Rashomon' before. That does limit the joke's efficacy, sadly enough.

It's a good movie, BTW. You should watch it if you ever get the time.

Or perhaps it was a bad movie, and my own entirely subjective perception of it is getting in the way?

Solro - Rashomon is a movie about a baby that is found by some people chatting away during a rainstorm, and the priest is content to let the baby die but it's the lowly farmer who decides to take it home and raise it with his other kids. Eventually it grows up to be Superman.

I missed it the first time around but upon repeated viewings I think this episode reveals things I didn't catch at first.
