I wonder if the trend of utterly garbage DLC will continue with games indefinitely - or if at some point the bubble will pop. Even 10 dollars was far too much for bioshock infinite's season pass. What a joke.

Chocolate Jesus - 2015-08-09

Dunno, just keep buying those season passes.

The reason there will never be a DLC/micro buy bubble is because games are targeted at kids and teens for the most part, and while there a drop off when most people age out of being gullible, more kids are constantly born to replace them.

Your only option is to boycott triple A games and join the alpha nerds on private EverQuest and WoW servers like Project 1999, Kronos, Nostalrius, and (eventually) Corecraft. Let the casual scum play their 0 retail games on Xbox Live and PSN and embrace your inner neckbeard like I did. You'll never look back.

The only games I will pay for are autistic grand strategy games, like Europa Universalis, Crusader Kings, and Hearts of Iron. Also Kerbals and Cities Skylines. AAA titles are either pirated or ignored; the handful of times there are AAA titles I actually respect enough to pay for, like Bioware RPGs, I will buy the base game sans DLC, then ignore my legit copy in favour of the latest fully-DLC'd pirate release. It's a good setup, and I feel it balances both civic responsibility and individual self-interest quite nicely.

Speaking of "autistic" I recently had to go to bat with one of my clients who spent WAY too much money on a certain game and its DLCs (not saying which game or company) and they turned out refunding it. I feel like it was a small victory for me.

And being a kid/teen isn't the same as being an adult with an intellectual disability, but these game companies seem to prey on both. Either money grows on trees or you're so into what you're playing that you lose track and there goes your social security check.

or: go outside

Sorry to say it EH, but Paradox isn't as fringe as you might hope. They're on their way to becoming the de facto strategy hucksters of the PC realm, as Total War was before that series became an excuse to market new videocards. I mean, they'll have to burn down Sid Meier's throne room to get there, but I suspect Stellaris' answer to Beyond Earth might be the tipping-point.

If I played more video games these guys would be my RLM, which pretty much replaced AV Club for my go-to place to figure out of I should spend money on the movies or not. But unlike a movie, I estimate that I'll be playing New Vegas and Borderlands 2 off and on for at least another couple of years, vs a game that I can just sit down and beat in an hour.

I think that's why I liked Ground Zeroes so much. It's a fun game no matter what, but it was also the length of a feature film or average-size novel, in terms of gameplay time. And I like that. I feel like every game is trying to convince your friend to read fucking 2666 and Infinite Jest at the same time when they've got other commitments.

I hope that TPP's missions follow Peace Walker's bite sized formula. It's getting harder to sit down and Iron Man marathon out six to seven hours at a time.

infinite zest - 2015-08-10

Yeah.. and I remember the day I got the original MGS. I stayed up all night and beat the whole game. And yeah.. I guess I did sort of have that "that's it?" feel when I beat Ground Zeroes, but it was mostly because I was expecting more of the overwrought stories from previous ones.

I mean, I paid 7.99 for it so I can't complain like the people who might have paid 60, but it's kind of like complaining that Don DeLillo's Body Artist and Underworld are the same price, one being like 100 pages and the other around 900. Because I checked and they are.

So it's hard for me to say.. I don't necessarily wish games to revert back to shorter playtime or anything, but it's hard when there's so many games all adopting the longplay formula. Do I just get 'em all and wait out the apocalypse in my mom's basement?

memedumpster - 2015-08-09

I don't play video games, but Rich with a beard is my new Saturday night thing.

infinite zest - 2015-08-10

If you can handle that laugh..

StanleyPain - 2015-08-10

I watched this when it first came out so forgive me if they mention this in the video (I forget), but it's important to note that Rocksteady absolutely swore to god that Arkham Knight would be an entirely new character in the DC universe and that they were given permission to basically create a character for the game's story. The utterly boring-as-shit reveal that it is Jason Todd is probably the most disappointing bait-and-switch garbage since JJ Abrams tried to claim that Star Trek 2 wasn't about Khan.
I had a lot of respect for what they did with Arkham Asylum and City, but that was just straight up bullshit.
