funny enough, the Mi-28 actually has ejector seats. They function, apparently, by blowing off the side of the cockpit and shooting the pilots out horizontally.

The other Russian attack helicopter, the Ka-50, also has ejection seats, but those work by first blowing off the main rotor blades with explosives, and then ejecting vertically, like a traditional ejection seat.

No current American or European helicopters have ejection seats. That may tell you something about the concept.

Oh cool! I always thought that a horizontal ejection seat would do the trick, although there'd be less time to activate the parachute, and being so close to the ground strapped in a seat could be worse than getting in a really nasty car crash.

Helicopters are cool and all but I'm surprised we haven't found anything that's a little more applicable. I for one would like to see flying saucer technology utilized, or even like a big drone that can fit a few humans inside of it.

Oops.. Blue Vein Steel really likes helicopters. I don't think they should go away or anything, but other modes of air hover should be looked into.

Kinda off topic but an old friend of mine was an extra in Mission Impossible 3 and Tom Cruise came up to her and just says "I love helicopters" and walked away. I can't remember if there were any helicopters in that movie, but there definitely weren't on the set of what they were shooting that day.

i have to admit this is a pretty sweet crash though, the pilot did an amazing job of not killing everyone when he lost control of the tail rotor

Actually, I think the reaction would be substantially the same, the only difference being that the userbase would swap places - the current assholes turning into weekend warriors, and the current weekend warriors turning into assholes.

To Chocolate Jesus' point, the pilot did survive and do the best he could. It looks like the tail rotor just stopped functioning, causing the uncontrolled spin.

But the point he just made with those videos is that tragedy by no means makes for taboo on here.

Especially not when they are soldiers operating killing machines who happen to die whilst doing so.

Oh, for sure not trying to censor anything, just adding my opinion with the rating. At the end of the day, I did watch this a few times, so I'm. Not judging anyone. I just don't like real death for laughs.

To IZ above, helos are just cool I think, kind of marvels of modern engineering. And nearly every other idea for achieving stable vertical flight has been tried, and the basic helo design remains the most used. As complicated as it all looks, it's also proven to be the most effective method for VTOL flight. I don't think it will be in the future, but as far as commercial scale implementation using the production methods available, the whirlybird is king

These Mi-28s also has titanium tub that surrounds the 2 cockpits, which is supposed to be able to withstand 20mm rounds, along with glass able to withstand .50 caliber rounds. They also have ejection seats (which where probably non-functioning, due to the non-critical nature of this flight the fact that they probably don't actually work anyway). Attack helicopters like that are specifically designed to keep the crew alive during events like this. And to be fair to the Russians, the Mi-28 is considered to be a very good attack helicopter. If not as technically advanced as the newest US Apaches, it is at least as survivable, if not much more so.
