But really, this is the opposite of what I love about the credits to Moon Zero 2.

Polanski and consent are two interesting words to use together.

Who produced this intro? It has a very Jay Ward feel to it.

Old_Zircon - 2015-07-27

The art looks really familiar, but it's also a style that was pretty common on novelty greeting cards and TV commercials back then so it could be almost anyone.

Still, it could easily be him, although I would hope that he would have done a better job. This makes the opening credits of Mannequin look good.

Old_Zircon - 2015-07-27

They also cut over 20 minutes out when they added this. I've never actually seen the theatrical cut, though, the old video store had the restored version back when I was 13 and loved this movie.

Well yeah, really the "Jay Ward" is just "cheap Mexican animator" style. They were really just recording radio shows and then outsourced everything about the animation itself, to get it done as quickly and cheaply as possible. Supposedly they never even saw the final animation before it aired.

fluffy - 2015-07-27

the "Jay Ward" style, I mean.

Old_Zircon - 2015-07-27

I didn't actually know that!

When I saw this movie in the 70s, it was on the CBS Late Movie, which ran at the same time slot that Letterman occupied until recently. You never knew quite what they were going to run. It was the first place I ever saw "Monty Python and the Holy Grail", and also Kubrick's "Lolita" with James Mason and Peter Sellers, Hitchcock's "The 39 Steps", and that unforgettable Golan-Globus masterfece, "The Apple"

What I saw was the same credits beginning with the MGM Lion sprouting fangs, and that sequence, sans the silly cartoon, and that sequence seems to have its own following.

And here's an article about a third version, with a cartoon vampire replacing the MGM Lion. Maybe someone from the studio didn't like to see their Logo turned into an ugly monster, and having the lion sprout fangs was seen as a compromise.

Freleng-DePatie did these by the dozen, particularly for MGM.

Ah! That makes sense.

StanleyPain - 2015-07-27

This isn't on the film now, though, right? Cuz I've seen it a few times (I actually really like this movie, more than anything else Polanski has ever made) and I only remember a little bit of animation for the credits, but that's about it.

Old_Zircon - 2015-07-27

Yeah, I only learned about this tonight but my understanding is this was only present on the American theatrical release prints, and isn't even an extra on the DVD and blu-ray editions because Polanski hated it so much.

I also like this movie more than any other Polanski film except possibly for Rosemary's Baby, but even that I'm not sure about. I bet he would have turned out a very different (and probably less rapey) artist and person if the Tate/LaBianca murders hadn't happened.

Old_Zircon - 2015-07-27

It's kind of the opposite of 2001, where for the longest time the overture and intermission were taken out of it after the original theatrical run.

Maggot Brain - 2015-07-27

Did Sharon Tate ever make a movie where she wasn't killed?

memedumpster - 2015-07-27

Not even a home movie.
