Don't watch the movie but read Timeline; that movie actually explains time travel in a way that makes sense (to me anyway) even more than the movie Primer. Crichton was a genius so it doesn't surprise me that he looked down the rabbit hole long ago.

That guy - 2015-06-23

He looked down in, and he liked what he saw, and he went.

Old_Zircon - 2015-06-23

His experience in the Harvard English department sounds about right.

StanleyPain - 2015-06-23

Crichton was pretty much a right wing loon and, surprisingly for being from a scientific background, a massive climate change denier. Still, he wrote some pretty good books that are fun to read.

By far, though, his most wing-nuttiest book was State of Fear which reads like some kind of Glenn Beck/Bill O'Reilly collaboration about a bunch of environmental activities who, naturally being tree-hugging liberal, magically develop a device capable of causing weather disasters they can blame on global warming.

infinite zest - 2015-06-23

i think there was an American Dad episode that was just like that too. Thing is, if things like global warming, human rights equality and everything else like that are taken care of in our lifetimes, that's going to leave a lot of people jobless, just like if they made a crash proof operating system so that ITs weren't needed anymore. What do they do then? Create their own trouble! Oh no!

That guy - 2015-06-23

Sure, sure. I don't think journalism got any less bullshit just because Crichton was mostly bananas.

SteamPoweredKleenex - 2015-06-23

Not to mention after JP, every one of his books was written like it was an inch away from being a screenplay. Take Prey for example. Yeah, he did some research and had Ian Malcolm-like bits at every chapter beginning, but too much of it was formulaic.

baleen - 2015-06-23

In the early 90's it was perfectly acceptable to be as skeptical of climate change as he was, because lots of respectable scientists were.

The problem is, a lot of chauvinist brick shitters have a really hard time admitting that they've been wrong, which is where you have the Republican party these days.

dairyqueenlatifah - 2015-06-23

I had no idea he was dead until now.

takewithfood - 2015-06-23

So he isn't dead anymore?

dairyqueenlatifah - 2015-06-23

*Ahem*:

I had no idea he, Michael Crichton, had passed away back in 2008, until just now when I looked him up after seeing this video. I was under the impression that he, Mr. Crichton, was still alive and well today. I was mistaken.

That guy - 2015-06-23

Ambiguous phrasing! GET HIM!!

oddeye - 2015-06-23

I understood what queenlatifah said.

Kid Fenris - 2015-06-23

Crichton was a mediocre airport-fiction hack who never created a memorable character or did an interesting idea justice. He is best remembered as the guy who tried to make one of his critics a child molester in one of his books.

The best part of this is him getting pouty over people calling him racist for Rising Sun, wherein he rattled off every Japanophobic factoid of the late 1980s and expected no one to question it.

Hooker - 2015-06-23

He's best remembered as the most popular writer of the 90s and the author of both The Andromeda Strain and Jurassic Park. He's was a hacky pulp fiction author but maybe let's come back down to Earth here.

oddeye - 2015-06-23

Jurassic World was his best book I think.

Kid Fenris - 2015-06-23

Every book he wrote was better as a movie. Even Congo.

Especially Congo.

kingarthur - 2015-06-24

As bad as Congo was as a movie, it had glorious Ernie Hudson and hammy Tim Curry to enjoy in it.

I don't know what redeeming factor the book would have had.

Rosebeekee - 2015-06-24

A gorilla that didn't need a Nintendo Power glove to talk.

fluffy - 2015-06-24

Someday I want to see the movie adaptation of Terminal Man, because I've heard that it actually breaks that rule.

Also Sphere was a pretty shitty movie but looking back it was also a pretty shitty book so that's a toss-up.

But really I thought Andromeda Strain was a better book than movie, mostly because there were a lot of things that made perfect sense in the book which couldn't really be explained in the movie without poorly-written expository dialog.

PegLegPete - 2015-06-24

This is a five star video because for the early 90's, coming from a writer no less, it's a great lecture and Q&A. He might have written some horrible crap but he's probably at his best here,
