this was the first R-Rated movie I ever snuck into as a kid.

My last birthday cake was a cookie from a restaurant with a candle in it; because my Mom was too sick to make a cake.
EvilHomer - 2015-06-17 My last birthday cake was a sugarfree carrot cake, because I was at work, and there's a lot of diabetics down there. I did not eat any of it.

Old_Zircon - 2015-06-17 The last time I willingly celebrated my birthday was in middle school.

EvilHomer - 2015-06-17
I don't get it. Was this funny back in the 70s?
EvilHomer - 2015-06-17 I just don't understand where the humor is. His father sort of made a funny face at 1:04, but I think maybe he's blind, or possibly slow, and I felt kind of sad for him.
That guy - 2015-06-17 Have you seen the whole movie?
That scene isn't laugh-out-loud funny, but it has a schticky charm to it.
Old_Zircon - 2015-06-17 This may be Evilhomer's most diabolical troll yet.
EvilHomer - 2015-06-17 I'm not trolling, just confused. I've never seen this movie before, so maybe the other parts of it are funny? Maybe this scene is funny in context? I have no idea.
All I know is, this scenes strikes me, not as funny, but as kind of sad; I feel bad for Leslie Nielsen's character. He was super funny in Three Amigos and Naked Gun, so far all I know, this is some kind of drama role.
That guy - 2015-06-17 sigh
I'll remember this.
EvilHomer - 2015-06-17 Even the guy who uploaded this movie to Youtube only gave it a 1/10. Maybe it's an early experiment in anti-comedy?
Old_Zircon - 2015-06-17 Calling Steve Martin "Leslie Nielsen" totally broke the kayfabe.
EvilHomer - 2015-06-17 OK, the Leslie Nielsen comment was a joke, I'll admit that. But I'm seriously at a loss as to why this might be funny. It's like that time I watched The Ice Rink, an excruciating French comedy starring Bruce Campbell. I wasn't amused, I wasn't offended - I was just mildly perplexed.
Is the joke that he is adopted and in emotional pain?
EvilHomer - 2015-06-17 Cena - if my taste in ponies is so bad, then why did Hasbro see fit to cater directly to me? Derpy, Roid Rage, Dr Whooves, Cloudchaser, Vinyl, Spa and Big Lebowski Ponies, even Boysenberry!
I admit, it was a little disappointing that they didn't include Diamond Tiara, but that episode was meant to showcase secondary characters, not the star of the show.
yogarfield - 2015-06-17 I see you trollin, but it's basically the American flavor of "Being There".
Old_Zircon - 2015-06-17 I don't know that that's a very good compariosn.
Also, Being There was American, too.
yogarfield - 2015-06-17 Hapless simpleton rises to prosperity in spite of / becauce of his utter stupidity. Yeah, both American, but you know what I mean. By that I mean I was high, whatever.

Albuquerque Halsey - 2015-06-17 >Hapless simpleton rises to prosperity in spite of / becauce of his utter stupidity.
but enough about EvilHomer
Quad9Damage - 2015-06-18 When we were kids, we thought this scene was funny because he thinks he's supposed to turn black like the rest of them.
As an adult, I think this scene is funny because of the tuna fish salad on white bread with mayonnaise, Tab and two Twinkies. To get the humor you have to understand the science behind Navin R Johnson. That requires watching the whole movie.
EvilHomer - 2015-06-18 >> When we were kids, we thought this scene was funny because he thinks he's supposed to turn black like the rest of them.
Well here again, that's not so much funny as it is sad. He wants to fit in, but is keenly aware of how different he is. He's cut off from his family.
A few days ago, someone submitted the film "This is England", which deals with the same theme as this clip - the importance of family. Without family, you wind up becoming angry and estranged; you lose your England. That skinhead movie is very powerful, and while there are certainly some very funny bits (like when the little boy is running away from the shopkeeper, calling him a "fucking Paki"), I do not think anyone would argue it is a "comedy" film.
Navin is Combo. He appears to be a good man deeply flawed, holding on to a lot of rage and grief. He needs to be loved, not laughed at.
EvilHomer - 2015-06-18 >> >Hapless simpleton rises to prosperity in spite of / becauce of his utter stupidity.
It's actually interesting you mention this, because I was browsing the CWC forums last night, and found a perfect counterpoint to this clip:
https://kiwifar.ms/threads/2015-june-15-lizardkin.10196/
I laughed my ass off when I read that Facebook post; seriously, I was laughing uncontrollably, I think I woke my neighbour up. That, I found funny, instantly and instinctively. If your theory is true, yogarfield (and it may well be), then Steve Martin's character is essentially ChrisChan. Yes, I suppose I can understand that, that is potentially "humorous" from a mechanical point of view. Yet ChrisChan is funny, Steve Martin is not.
How could this be the case? What makes young miss Christine such a natural comedian, that Mr Martin here lacks? Is it authenticity, context, or perhaps aggression (as Dave Barry once argued http://tinyurl.com/laughlabarticle )?
Old_Zircon - 2015-06-18 "EvilHomer

Ok, that was pretty funny in a groaning kind of way.
Old_Zircon - 2015-06-18 "yogarfield

Similar premise (the standard "rags to riches" narrative) but vastly different intent and treatment of that narrative. Both are some of the best movies though.
Old_Zircon - 2015-06-18 Also, Evilhomer, Chrischan is sad not funny, Steve Martin used to be funny, and Dave Barry is the antithesis of funny.
EvilHomer - 2015-06-18 ChrisChan is tragicomic; a complex figure at once sad and funny, reprehensible and inspiring, creepy and endearing - he is our post-post-modern Pierrot (Pierrette?). Steve Martin I barely remember but for The Three Amigos and that Grand Theft Banjo skit he was famous for; if he was ever funny, I probably missed it. And Dave Barry I am indifferent towards, his talents as a writer being largely invalidated by his contributions to those annoying-ass pirate memes. I mention him solely for his analysis of the British Science Association's LaughLab project, which was spot-on.
yogarfield - 2015-06-18 I SAID I WAS HIGH
definitely different treatment of "stupid rags to stupid rich", but I enjoy Being There more, even if the whole thing is a setup to a giant punchline at the end.
Old_Zircon - 2015-06-17
Easily in my top 10 favorite movies of all time.

Binro the Heretic - 2015-06-18
There was a story from a woman on "This American Life" last week. When she was a little girl, her dad did bits from "The Jerk" because he loved the movie.
Every year when the new phone books came out, he would run around and shout excitedly about their name being in print. When he would fix her bag lunch for school, he would sing her the "Thermos Song".
She never knew any of that stuff came from the movie until she watched the movie with her friends and it freaked her out.
