Written by John Scott 3. So, they're finally just having robots write scripts now?

Had a great discussion at work last week about the role of screenwriting software in the homogenization of narrative structure in TV and movies since the mid 90s.

Basically all of your story arcs, character relationships, etc. etc. are managed by software and it really shows in a LOT of the resulting pictures.

Screenplays aren't being written algorithmically yet but it's closer than most people realize.

Really? It's horrifyingly not surprising, but you'd think a robot would take a bit more of an occhams razor approach and skip the conflict..

The screenwriting software program Dramatica was available from the early 90s on and it was used WIDELY.

The early version does the whole Joseph Campbell / Star Wars Hero's Journey thing.

Still, I wouldn't mind seeing Schwarzenegger make an attempt at honest dramatic indie films. Maybe he can take a turn back to comedy? That's what he's really great at.

Woah weird! And kinda cool, I guess. But that actually seems like more work than doing it yourself, especially if you want to avoid said Campbellian cliches. Just having two people working on a screenplay if you're stuck (or even just talking to a friend) seems a lot easier. My only problem is getting little cues like "INT" "EXT" etc. etc. down, which would help a lot, even if I think they're unnecessary for the kind of stuff I'm writing. But they apparently ARE necessary, if you want anyone to actually read it.. arg.

Yeah, I'm interested enough to at least see the movie, although this image change was semi-attempted with End of Days.. Arnie's not funny nor does he do his normal action-packed stuff.. ok that movie was unintentionally hilarious. Hollywood's surprised me before: I really didn't see Viggo Mortensen going anywhere; he was a good asshole as Master Chief in GI Jane and then he was just Aragorn, and I figured he'd just continue down that path with his accent and whatnot, but all of a sudden he's Cronenberg's best friend! A Cronenberg Crony if you will.

I assume that you have to, or at least are supposed to, credit Dramatica in the writing credits? I wonder if there's little things people can find if you don't, kind of like T.As who boast that they can always tell when Wikipedia was used instead of the assigned reading..
