The blimp launched at 1:22 is literally hoisting a banner of Reddit banality.

dairyqueenlatifah - 2015-03-20

Yeah, I saw "Success Kid" at the top of it.

Jet Bin Fever - 2015-03-20

I love this show, but I don't see how Amy Goodman can handle doing news like this every single day.

kingarthur - 2015-03-20

I think it takes its toll on her appearance. But God bless her, thank whatever gods don't exist that she does it.

StanleyPain - 2015-03-20

DN lost all credibility with me when they took up their irrational anti-GMO nonsense, having Chris Hedges on to discuss every issue with absolutely no counter-argument, and their misinformed and dishonest reporting about depleted uranium causing health problems in Fallujah (with it's predictable "the US is the worst thing ever and all Americans should be ashamed of themselves" presentation) despite the lack of any scientific evidence that DU is responsible in any way for what was being reported.
TPP is probably a bad thing (similar to GATT and NAFTA), but I'd rather a more level-headed analysis of it.

SolRo - 2015-03-20

I'd like to know your theory for the huge spike in birth defects and cancer rates in Fallujah after the US invasion, was it the massive DU/Phosphorous shelling, or maybe Iraqis have this reaction because of too much freedom?

http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2013/03/20/iraq-war-anniversary- birth-defects-cancer_n_2917701.html

Jet Bin Fever - 2015-03-20

Yeah, I've thought for years that DU lead to big swaths of radioactive soil and sand in the region, which can then be inhaled or eaten, producing the problems. Are you saying that's not the case?

Doomstein - 2015-03-21

@StanleyPain

https://wikileaks.org/tpp-ip2/

On the left hand side are the links to the leaked documents. Unfortunately until all this cloak and dagger shit is over with, these leaks are the only documentation to base an educated opinion on. So in the meantime expect a lot of bias and speculation.

fedex - 2015-03-21

"Current TPP negotiation member states are the United States, Japan, Mexico, Canada, Australia, Malaysia, Chile, Singapore, Peru, Vietnam, New Zealand and Brunei."

With the exception of Brunei (Brunei??) they are all Pacific Rim countries, no EuroZone or Africa etc accounted for.

fedex - 2015-03-21

NVMND, for some reason I thought Brunei was in the Middle East. They are all PacRim countries.

fedex - 2015-03-21

I guess my point is, what incentive will the rest of the world have to deal with this organization? I cant see them all being strong-armed into it.

baleen - 2015-03-21

I'm not a fan of DN either, but if both Stiglitz and Krugman are against this thing I kind of wish it would die. We don't need to rattle sabres with China over who can work the cheapest, we need to relocate our supply chain back to North America. A lot of businesses are saying that the advantage China has as a home for manufacturing everything cheaply is waning.

It will probably take some kind of massive federal subsidy to convince manufacturers to come back.

Oscar Wildcat - 2015-03-21

I'm a big fan of the show: yes, it can be reflexively left wing and indulge in identity politics, it's a media outlet after all. At those points I usually tune out. But for actual capital N news she's Cronkite with tits, I tell you! One of the last credible reporters with the head concussions to prove it.

I do take issue with the claim that opposing voices don't appear on the show, they often do ( always invited, occasionally showing ) and the results are always illuminating ( last week, she had two people dicussing the pros and cons of corporate personhood. Check it out. ) But really, the whole of the rest of the news sphere gives an unending stream of the "opposing" point of view. Have you ever watched the News Hour on PBS? How about a round table discussion of three right wing jews discussing Palestine? Or an oil executive and a petroleum engineer discussing fracking regs? Then there is the commercial news. Do I even need to go there? They're just cold making it up at this point, from what I gather.

All that said, I don't actually _watch_ the show. I listen to it on the radio when I'm cooking supper.

Void 71 - 2015-03-21

We can't bring the factories back to America until we have enough Mexicans to compete with China's surplus of peasant labor. Those pesky western wages are the only thing standing in our way, but that will fix itself if we continue to drive them down by keeping the border wide open. In the meantime, we have no choice but to sign a trade deal with overpopulated asian countries that are willing to exploit their human 'resources'. Who else is going to make our cheap plastic shit?

baleen - 2015-03-21

We have the technology to replace even those factory laborers who would work for pennies in the endless "race to the bottom," we just use it as the ace in the hole to stop wages from going up.

Karl Marx predicted this would happen, and that it would lead to the collapse of capitalism. It's one of his most prescient predictions and one of the few things he got truly right.

memedumpster - 2015-03-21

How dare you question the Emperor!

Bort, have these people executed, I'll be in my Ready Room.

EvilHomer - 2015-03-21

Did you see that episode of Jimmy Kimmel, where Big O came out and read all those Mean Tweets ppl wrote about him?!! lol so funneh

http://tinyurl.com/bestestpresident

Plz don't execute RoUS. He's learned his lesson, he'll be good from now on. :(

memedumpster - 2015-03-21

Not since the Nazi Council laughed at the itemized letter from America asking them not to genocide up the Middle East so we could have their oil have I been so amused by a war criminal's mirth!

I also like Jimmy K, he does his show with a spice lost on a lot of talk shows.

Bort - 2015-03-21

I'm not a fan of TPP; I have yet to see any reasons at all to support it.

So yeah, I think Obama's wrong on this one. I am nevertheless generally supportive of his decisions.

Nominal - 2015-03-21

For someone mocking identity politics followers, meme, you're knee-jerking and blanketing an awful lot like them.

Nominal - 2015-03-21

(plus I can specifically recall at least 3 separate instances where Bort specifically said Obama isn't an emperor)

memedumpster - 2015-03-21

When you both stop supporting life slaughtering monsters by dehumanizing actual people into numbers to be reduced to the base mathematics of your imperial comfort, I will stop doing tests to see if I can predict your responses with 100% accuracy.

I'm not interested in changing your minds. You're vote-cattle, you'd vote for Hitler if he had the right letter next to his name, and defend him with your lives and souls. I just want to see if you're useful to actual progress using the same easily predictable stimulus-response actions that politicians use to ensure you'll vote for them. You're hard-cases, so any success here will transfer easily to the faaaaaaar more malleable general public.

It isn't even about me.

Bobonne - 2015-03-21

You're why I quit going to 54evil.

EvilHomer - 2015-03-21

Hey, you know who else hates memedumpster and doesn't go to 54evil?

HITLER.

Bort - 2015-03-21

"When you both stop supporting life slaughtering monsters by dehumanizing actual people into numbers to be reduced to the base mathematics of your imperial comfort, I will stop doing tests to see if I can predict your responses with 100% accuracy."

Meanwhile, today there was a mosque bombing that killed 137; ISIS has claimed responsibility. But it's a non-event in your mind because the US didn't do it, and any efforts to stop ISIS are a reprehensible matter of "imperial comfort", amirite?

Half the Left is completely full of shit. I suppose that's better than the Right, which is 100% full of shit top to bottom, but it's nothing to be proud of either.

Bobonne - 2015-03-21

I don't hate meme.

I just couldn't put up with being around him anymore, for my own temperament and sanity.

So it was my weakness, but...

Bort - 2015-03-21

I like meme as well. But if he's gonna go after me, I'll go after him too; it's only fair.

Plus, he never did tell us why Batman sucks.

kingarthur - 2015-03-21

You're assuming the DNC is the "left". Stop doing that.

memedumpster - 2015-03-22

You're all the reason I will never vote Democrat again.

I didn't expand the prison system 1600%. I didn't bomb seven countries with drones. I didn't prosecute more whistleblowers than Nixon. I didn't deny the American territories the right to vote sighting a WHITE SUPREMACIST legal decision. I've never executed an American citizen with or without due process. I didn't militarize the police.

I'm not Obama.

You're not politically responsible. At all.

I don't care what you think of me. It's about the people of the world being treated like seven billion niggers on your fucking American white Democrat plantation.

I have no respect for your blindness, your delusion, and your partisan idiocy. I never will.

memedumpster - 2015-03-22

And, believe it or not, the rest of the planet doesn't share your delusions of superior American fuckingidiotness and they know you'd watch them all die with pride in your smug goddamned horseshit.

This country is a global embarrassment, and you're the clowns who lead the parade.

memedumpster - 2015-03-22

There is this thing you never heard of called the Universal Declaration of Human Rights. Obama has shat up and down it with pride and you all defend this. You're the same kind of monsters.

The same.

Why don't you go tell Jimmy Carter, who has spent years now calling out Obama's human rights violations, what a terrible fucking person I am, Bobonne, and how I made you sad.

Fuck.

memedumpster - 2015-03-22

This really is a nation of savage goddamned cowards.

Except kingarthur.

User name ideological synergy!

Bobonne - 2015-03-22

I'm not even a fucking American, you crazy piece of shit.

What the fuck is wrong with you, man?

What the FUCK is wrong with you?

Bort - 2015-03-22

I don't want to turn this into an all-encompassing fight -- if I want to yell at the far Left there are a million other sites to do so at, and I'd rather not shit where I eat -- but I decided to research your 1600% figure. Turns out the imperialist running dogs at aclu.org say that it's a 1600% increase from 1990 to 2009 (which is a hell of a lot to pin on Obama), and they also made this observation:

"Ohio recently announced that it will become, on December 31, 2011, the first state in the nation to sell a publicly operated prison, Lake Erie Correctional Facility, to a private company, CCA. Notably, the head of Ohio's corrections department had served as a managing director of CCA. The claim that prison privatization demonstrably reduces costs and trims government budgets may detract from the critical work of reducing the state's prison population."

Well imagine that, when you let Republicans take over like non-voters did in 2010, they pull exactly the shit you hate the most. And then you blame it on the Democrats.

asian hick - 2015-03-22

I voted for Obama in 2008 and if I had been able, I'd have voted for him in 2012. Having said that, I'm under no illusion that he's a great or even good president. The fact is that our single member district electoral system gives us a choice between two horrible alternatives. With the prospect of a Romney presidency and a radicalized right, I chose the least bad.

The country desperately needs proportional representation so we don't have to settle for the Obamas or the Clintons and our main motivation to vote is based upon voting for someone rather than against their opponent. Sadly that will never happen.

I suppose this makes me a part of the problem in meme's eyes but it's not like my vote counts, right?

Syd Midnight - 2015-03-25

While I don't think President Not Mitt Romney is going to go down in history books as one of the greats, I don't think he'll go down as a bad one either, and I'm rather fond of Vice President For The Love Of God Not Sarah Palin.

Caminante Nocturno - 2015-03-21

Keep fighting that fight you lost decades ago, far left.

EvilHomer - 2015-03-21

Normally I'd agree, but according to Wikipedia, the TPP is suspected to contain intellectual "property" provisions which could jeopardize both the doujinshi and the cosplay industries.

First they came for the communists, then they came for the trade unionists, and when they got to the cosplayers, there was no one left to help me.

Caminante Nocturno - 2015-03-21

The state of the Doujin Industrial Complex is too strong for anyone or anything to topple.

dairyqueenlatifah - 2015-03-21

I wish I had saved my stars for you two.

Nominal - 2015-03-21

Blame the boomers clamoring for the destruction of unions.

Fuckers were born into the most prosperous worker environment IN ALL OF HUMAN HISTORY, decided they needed MORE and that those pesky dues and taxes for infrastructure were in the way.

Bort - 2015-11-25

Months later ...

Hey memedumpster guess what? Turns out I am in favor of the TPP, at least nominally, now that I've had a chance to look at the text. Here are the aspects I like:

- TPP member nations must provide a minimum wage.
- TPP member nations must legally allow unions.
- TPP member nations may not employ child labor.
- TPP member nations may not practice slavery.

So it looks like the TPP may actually do a hell of a lot of good in nations where the local governments have not had much incentive to give workers any rights before. Hmmm, am I gonna be for that, or against it? If I followed Leftie conventional wisdom, I would continue to hate the TPP because a great many Lefties are fucking retards. But I am suddenly seeing that the TPP may actually do a fair amount of good, and if that makes me a running dog of that imperialist Obama, I think I can be proud of that.
