I think we can add "being gay" to the list of things Ben Carson doesn't understand.

I have a feeling that this list is going to become very long before the primary season finishes.

Rodents of Unusual Size - 2015-03-04

Unless he does understand and decided to go straight after that wild frat party back in college.

Killer Joe - 2015-03-06

He has since (like a day later) bravely flipflopped on the issue and bravely declared that he won't talk about gay issues ever again.

erratic - 2015-03-04

at 1:45 is basically "So I can clearly not chose the cup in front of me... (smug smile)"

Sexy Duck Cop - 2015-03-04

You forgot to preface every reference to Ben Carson with the word "doctor." Remember, this man is an intellectual learned figure of letters. By Republican standards.

Oscar Wildcat - 2015-03-04

Of course being black is a choice. There's Bill Clinton. And Vanilla Ice. Come on Ben, you're not going to sit there and deny Vanilla Ice are you?

Cena_mark - 2015-03-04

John Cena from 2003-2006

Maggot Brain - 2015-03-04

I got, co-ed prisons!

Nominal - 2015-03-04

Off topic, but hearing O'Reily go off how the federal government can't force laws on states TRIGGERED me.

The whole libertarian and gun nut view that individual states are bastions of liberty to oppose the tyrannical federal government kills me. There has been ZERO historical precedent to back this up, and countless examples to the contrary where the federal government put a stop to local tyranny. From the Antifederalists to the Civil War to the Civil Rights Act, "states rights" has been invoked to defend nothing but horrible actions.

Cena_mark - 2015-03-04

Gun nuts talk highly of the weapons being used to stop tyranny, but they never did. Where were the gun owners when Native Americans were being slaughtered? The rednecks with the guns doing the slaughtering just as they were the ones lynching blacks. None of them stood up for the Japanese Americans when they were being rounded up. And when the Black Panthers wanted to use guns in their fight for civil rights the NRA and Governor Ronnie banned the practice of open carrying in California.
All guns have done is up hold the status quo... eh, maybe with the exception of John Brown.

Bus_Aint_Comin - 2015-03-05

most of the weapons john brown planned on using were sharpened sticks, actually. they only had a few dozen rifles.

dairyqueenlatifah - 2015-03-04

It never ceases to amaze me how much of the black community is anti-gay.

spikestoyiu - 2015-03-04

And yet they're the number one transmitters of HIV.

TeenerTot - 2015-03-04

I'd like to know where he got his data about degrees of gayness pre- and post-incarceration. Was there a survey?

Cena_mark - 2015-03-04

I think his research is based on prison films, TV shows, and jokes about prison rape.

oddeye - 2015-03-04

cite your sources Dr. Smartypants! I've no doubt you believe your statement but unless you can back it up with credible evidence everone should just ignore you.

kamlem - 2015-03-04

So anti-miscegenation is fine, because people can just stop loving that person of a different ethnicity and choose someone of the same ethnicity? Is that this guys moon logic? I mean, even in the case of bisexuals that can be said for certain to have a choice, how can he reconcile this nonsense of the state limiting which unrelated consensual partner they can marry from racial civil rights issues?

Bootymarch - 2015-03-04

Bisexuals don't choose to be attracted to both sexes.

erratic - 2015-03-04

Right, Bootymarch, but i think Kamlem's point is that they can only choose to marry one at a time.

kamlem - 2015-03-05

Right, and at the moment I can't see the distinction between anti-miscegenation laws and anti-same sex marriage laws in regards to this "choice" argument being made. Just because a bisexual is attracted to both genders doesn't make a case that an individual should be prevented by law from marring the same gender person they love, any more than telling a mixed gender couple that they can marry different people within their race.

Jet Bin Fever - 2015-03-04

As a medical student, I can say flat out that some of the most brilliant doctors I know are horribly ignorant, inept, and all-around terrible people. Being a doctor means you're smart but not necessarily wise or correct in your views. Carson is a perfect example.

oddeye - 2015-03-04

Some of the dumbest fuckers I've ever know have been highly educated yet profoundly stupid Doctors of various medical fields.

Fuck people that follow every damn word someone says regarding matters outside of thier respective fields based soley on how many letters after their name they have.

gravelstudios - 2015-03-04

Being a brilliant surgeon requires a great depth of knowledge, but very little breadth of knowledge. It's possible to be really good at cutting people apart and sewing them back together without really knowing a lot about very many other topics. Apparently Dr. Oz is a brilliant heart surgeon, but obviously his baloney detector needs some fine tuning.

Jet Bin Fever - 2015-03-04

It's a good point about breadth of knowledge. I find that as I go along in medicine and things become much more focused on how to deal with this or that day to day and less the sort of foundational, big picture type of stuff, it is actually easier to perform well and stay in medicine. The hardest part was getting in to school. After that, you just put in a lot of hours, memorize what you need to, and fudge when you have to.
Anyone of normal intelligence can be a doctor really. We're not smarter than anyone, we just work really damned hard. I'm not trying to insult my profession by any means, I just hate it when people assume that the white coat I have to wear means I'm more respectable or wise than someone working a blue-collar job. It's bullshit.

oddeye - 2015-03-04

I should add though and I really can't overstate this enough but a good doctor that gives a shit and you can work well with is something that you should treasure and hold onto.

Jet Bin Fever - 2015-03-05

Oh, I completely agree. I'm being cynical, but I've also met some of the best people I've ever known in medicine. There's a spectrum, just like any profession.

Cena_mark - 2015-03-04

I really don't get why Republicans keep fighting this. They've pretty much lost not just legally, but culturally. They're losing much of the young people over it, while I doubt they'd lose much of their base by giving up on it. Its not like the pissed off homophobes would vote Democrat. Some would stay home, some would throw their votes away on 3rd party candidates, but the GOP could at least save some face.

Shanghai Tippytap - 2015-03-05

Mark, their whole political philosophy centers around the fact that they *don't* change. When they 'give up' on a position, they don't outright refute it; They just stop talking openly about it as part of their platform, and prefer to subtly reinforce it through a series of wink-and-nods from the podium. Hence how these dinosaurs can make snide remarks about science in order to subtly deny evolution, can make snide remarks about public schools in order to subtly support segregation, and can make snide remarks about the importance of family and in order to overtly deny rights to gay people. Subtlety to come on that issue.

Rodents of Unusual Size - 2015-03-05

I think the Meghan McCain generation will just accept it when they have majority power but by then it will be totally legal and no one will give a fuck.

I hope.

Rodents of Unusual Size - 2015-03-04

Well since marriage covers thousands of different legal benefits it would be way, way easier to just make gay marriage legal so nice try, fuckhead.

fluffy - 2015-03-04

"I don't think so." QED.

MurgatroidMendelbaum - 2015-03-04

America has fought exectly one war about Federal vs. States' rights.
The Confederacy lost. Get the fuck over it.
