I have fought engine room fires on warships at sea and I'll tell you right now this thing is 100% bullshit.

It seems like a biped on a ship dealing with waves and maybe water in the halls is about the worst design you could have come up with. Ditto for the drone, but its at least mobile. A little box on tank treads maybe? I dunno, there's a reason most robots are boring as hell to look at.

Joe, it's also got to do with Murphy's Law. If something can go wrong, it will go wrong and at the worst possible time and place.

Fires don't tend to break out in offices or messes or cabins that are down nice clean empty flats in ideal situations. They're generally in spaces with overused and overworked hydraulic gear, HP air lines that have been dieseled to god knows what because you're working these machines with a million idiot junior sailors (not actual idiots, just new), lubrication pumps that run forever and who knows what else. And of course the fire is going to be in a hard to reach area in an awkward spot where you have traverse low hanging pipes and negotiate every square inch of crap space that wasn't built for a human (let alone a bulky, awkward robot.)

Of course, some admiral somewhere is going to see this thing demonstrated in the perfect situation and setting where all the conditions of its best use are met and he's going to think, "yes, that will put out the ashtray fire in my luxury double-wide cabin quite nicely; we'll order three million of these."

Then, as these things fail horribly at their jobs and people get killed because these worthlessness robots they took forever when a proper fire attack team could have put out and overhauled a zone blaze in the space a few minutes, that same fuckstick admiral will be long retired, counting his kickback money and playing golf in between photo ops at ...

...you know what, I can go on but it's a LOT of rage along these lines.

stairs, hatches, etc.

there are reasons a humanoid robot (or at least one that can navigate stairs and operate latches) is needed rather than just a tracked robot.

A quadrapedal robot might be better, for stability and whatnot.

But that's all meaningless until computer science figures out how to make these things self-balancing and fast moving in chaotic conditions.

Talk about baby steps.

I've never seen a robot that looks like such a pussy.

This summer, from Michael Bay...

"Okay, who turned on the firefighting robot?"
"I AM HERE TO SUPPRESS FIRE."
"Go back to your recharge station, Ensign Roomba. There's no fire."
"THERE IS FIRE OR I WOULD NOT BE HERE."
"Can someone turn this off?"
"HUMANS ARE FIRE. I WILL SUPPRESS."

The re-imagined future thriller fused with the award-winning firefighting drama. It's "TERMINATOR BACKDRAFT!"

Also: Why not BIG DOG? You could kick it in the ass as it's on its way to fight the fire and it would self-correct!

Maybe it's too long for tight corners?

Jet Bin Fever - 2015-02-13

Pfft, one small modification away from going from fighting fires to starting them.
