but this shit is whats on tv now? really?

That guy - 2015-02-05

What? You don't want to bone that hot mom?

Prickly Pete - 2015-02-05

This shit was always on tv. Do you think Gilligan's Island was any better? By and large the television of today is the best it has ever been in the history of tv.

kingarthur - 2015-02-05

So, this Hollywood depiction of Asians is pretty much every bad stereotype we knew it would be, even though they had an actual real-life Asian to talk to and consult about it. But fuck that, gotta make those crackers laugh at those funny yella people!

It's All American Girl all over again.

gmol - 2015-02-05

Saw it today....felt like EHC and MitM. The mom's accent sounded completely fake.

chumbucket - 2015-02-05

Another show that thinks to be successful it only needs a script that delivers jokes intermixed with some vanilla family drama.

SteamPoweredKleenex - 2015-02-05

Vanilla? Is that a slur against honkey-American humor?

spikestoyiu - 2015-02-05

Haven't watched. How many bad driver jokes are there? Because I'll only watch if there are SO MANY!

oddeye - 2015-02-05

Fuck you guys, this is EXACTLY what being Asian and moving to America is like.

Rodents of Unusual Size - 2015-02-05

Wait, are you serious? I can't tell.

I grew up with a lot of Asian immigrant kids because it was Orange county. I was always jealous of their school lunches because they always looked so delicious. I don't know what the fuck that one kids problem was. Fuck that kid.

infinite zest - 2015-02-05

My best friend in elementary school was Korean American and got made fun of all the time for what he ate (yeah jerks because Bibembap TOTALLY SUCKS compared to Lunchables and Handisnacks) and I got made fun of for what my mom packed me, usually hummus and Pita, and fruit leather for desert. So we'd trade lunches a lot and sit by ourselves. But secretly, I think we both wanted to know what Lunchables and Handisnacks tasted like..

SteamPoweredKleenex - 2015-02-05

Gangnam Style, the Series?

The Wonder-san Years?

And what is it with the portrayal of white boy hair? If it's not a goth-like anime style, it's practically a perm for some reason.

oddeye - 2015-02-05

Riving Yerrow

Scrimmjob - 2015-02-05

Fresh off the boat isn't the best name for the show, but I'm glad they dropped the working title "Just a couple of gooks".

SteamPoweredKleenex - 2015-02-05

Odd thing: "Fresh off the Boat" or "FoB" was only something I heard from Asian students my wife had in her class, often referring to other Asians if they'd done something stupid.

It was the same place I learned there was such a thing as Laotian Gangsta Rap.

SolRo - 2015-02-05

I use fresh off the boat for Indian tech workers that still expect women relatives to do all the cleaning for them, even when those relatives are on the other side of the planet.

StanleyPain - 2015-02-05

Tonight's Episode: NO SOUP WITH BUFFET

Rodents of Unusual Size - 2015-02-05

Amy Wong's parents from Futurama are less stereotypical.

Cena_mark - 2015-02-05

So did Eddie Huang have some role in this other than writing his memoir? Did he sell it to ABC? If so he has no reason to be a hater.

kingarthur - 2015-02-05

If you wrote a memoir, sold it, and they turned it into this and still out your name on it? Yeah, he has room to hate. Looooooots of room.

CornOnTheCabre - 2015-02-05

Denounced is a strong word. "Was skeptical of the idea for the obvious reason of every network sitcom being dehumanizing, worthless pablum" fits more, but he seems to have made peace with it, because yes, pablum has its place in making a more tolerant consumer.

Rodents of Unusual Size - 2015-02-05

I read he'd denounced it but it's more like he's just complained about them for general shitty writing. And he's angry about them hiring an Iranian writer, for some reason.

CornOnTheCabre - 2015-02-05

Eh, he's angry about them not hiring a Chinese-American writer, which I can understand from both sides with the exact same reason: I do not know a single Chinese writer currently writing for television.

infinite zest - 2015-02-05

So in other words it's like "When the Whistle Blows" in "Extras?" I haven't read the book so I wouldn't know, but this doesn't seem that different or offensive to me than the Asian family on King of the Hill in Texas or Life With Chris, whatever that show is that Chris Rock did. A lot of it seems to be in the kid's head, with normal fish-out-of-water kid situations spiraling into disaster like in Malcom in the Middle.

What sucks though, and once again I haven't seen the show, is that "Selfie" starring John Cho (or Sulu if you will) got cancelled so quickly, and from what I can tell doesn't really pull out the race card all that much. It's just Sulu and Hot Chick From Dr. Who in a quirky comedy of sorts. So this is a bit of a step back but what're you gonna do? It's an ABC family sitcom.

dairyqueenlatifah - 2015-02-05

"Fresh off the Boat"?

You may as well have called it "Too Many Gooks".

Rodents of Unusual Size - 2015-02-05

starring a cast of hundreds...

SolRo - 2015-02-06

Cast of hundreds played by 3 Asian actors

oddeye - 2015-02-06

I don't want no trouble!!

Rodents of Unusual Size - 2015-02-06

I was thinking of an Asian version of "Too Many Cooks" but yeah you get the idea

Jet Bin Fever - 2015-02-11

Randall Park is fine, but my god is the hot mom terrible.
