Captures the essence of an unintelligent person desperately trying to sound just and poignant and coming off as pompous and out-of-touch.

I wanted to read this book when I was a libertarian, but I never got around to it, and even avoided it upon learning that the climax was a loooooooong ass speech. One of the silly aspects of the book is the community of geniuses, businessmen, and artists living together in the ultimate society. Did they mention how they got food and other basic resources without farmers and laborers, or did they just survive on pure objectiveness smugness?

The rich geniuses in their community of course had no problems doing menial labor, and were perfect at it and enjoyed it. Then they left their valley and all the parasites were dead, while the uncreative but easily led class would immediately serve their new masters.

One of the striking things about the book is that while it claims the "heroes" are "withdrawing their labor", the "heroes" actually steal government resources (land, oil, gold mines, etc) and burn or destroy them to trigger economic collapse and mass starvation. Galt steals plans from his employer he contracted to give them, Wyatt burns the oil fields he got from the government in exchange for refining it, Francisco does the same with his gold mine, Dagny built her railroad on free government seized land, etc. They don't walk away, they take from others and destroy, to make the most vulnerable willing to submit to their dictatorship.

A young girl's wealthy father was killed by communists, so she wrote a series of self-insert fanfics where she and her dad killed the baddies and had sex with each other. Like most such fanfics, it degenerated quickly from an actual story, into rants that go on for hundreds of pages.

"Hello, I'm John Galt. I'm better than all of you, all the time, even the people who think I've let them into my secret invisible dome of capitalism, because I'm still milking even them for every nickel they've got."

There's hoards upon hoards of people who take this as the gospel.

Cena_mark - 2014-12-20

And like most followers of the Bible I'm sure most followers of Rand have never read the book.

I read this speech at least once a year just to remind myself what is truly important

Rodents of Unusual Size - 2014-12-26

I know a guy who is poor as fuck and worships this book.

Maggot Brain - 2014-12-20

I keep telling people a Atles Shrugged movie is redundent because purple Rain. At least Prince had the decency to play one song and get our rather than ramble on like a crazy person.

bopeton - 2014-12-20

I don't even care about the message, which can be debated endlessly.

Just... that awful writing. Ugh.

The whole book is just a clumsy sermon with random sex scenes.

Maggot Brain - 2014-12-20

I know most people like to harp on Rand's writing style but I personally enjoyed her descriptions of architecture and engineering. However, the moment any one starts talking it turns to shit pudding.

Maggot Brain - 2014-12-20

Fuck! I didn't want to star this!

SteamPoweredKleenex - 2014-12-21

Is a man not entitled to the stars from his brow... ser?

Oktay - 2014-12-20

Nearly every single video I watch these days comes with one or two Ayn Rand This or Atlas Shrugged That recommended for me. And it doesn't seem to be based on the type of video I'm watching -- could be a music video, a cartoon, a 70s movie, you name it, 9 times out of 10, Old Shifty Eyes is staring at me from somewhere on the page. Somewhere near the top of the page in fact.

Thanks a lot PoeTV. Thanks a LOT.

Old_Zircon - 2014-12-21

Hey, at least you aren't getting MRAs and ghost farts like me.

EvilHomer - 2014-12-21

It's bad enough listening to Emmanuel Goldstein bleat for two minutes; there's no possible way I could pay attention to him for two HUNDRED!
