The perfect blend of childish innocence and psychotic rage.

bias - 2014-12-14

man, i don't to be mean about a movie that people liked but goddamn this was some middle of the road bullshit (a wise cracking animal side kick HOW ZANEY!!).

It really bums me out that people seem to be so into it. I feel like mainstream movies have gotten so terrible and bland that a movie that isnt 100% shit looks fantastic by comparison.

Maybe i just don't get it, i dunno.

Chocolate Jesus - 2014-12-14

Nah, you're right.

Binro the Heretic - 2014-12-14

It was fun, so fuck you.

infinite zest - 2014-12-14

It's fun, but I'd seen James Gunn's previous films before. Much like Sam Raimi, there's a lot of his old school stuff incorporated into a movie made for all-ages. And they have a lot in common. Sam always gets Bruce Campbell in Spiderman somewhere and James gets Lloyd Kaufman in all of his. There's many other things that may be spoilers but it's a nice wink to fans of their R-rated movies. In the comics, Rocket is a lot more vulgar than wiseass, but they had to tone that down obviously. And in a way, I'm glad he did. If you haven't seen Super I won't spoil anything there either, but it goes from really fun to not fun at all, sort of the feeling you get when you leave a Carnival and then realize you're stuck in traffic along with everybody else.

As for the movie itself, I think I liked it for a different reason. I promise this isn't a spoiler since it's at the very beginning, but I interpreted it as more of a 12 Monkeys premise throughout.

Binro the Heretic - 2014-12-14

Okay, that was a bit harsh, so let me expand upon it:

Sometimes, people like predictable things. It's a big part of storytelling. We WANT to see the heroes save the day. We want to see the two characters we know are in love get together. We want to see the bad guys lose.

You want to know what pisses me off? Movies and shows that do the opposite of what's expected just for the sake of not doing the expected.

When they pull bad guys win/hero dies/couple doesn't get together out of their asses just to pretend they're all different and "edgy" it makes me want to strap them into the Clockwork Orange chair and force them to watch the works of Frank Capra back-to-back.

To reiterate: It was fun, so fuck you.

infinite zest - 2014-12-14

Spoiler Alert for some other movie so I'm doing this: don't scroll down if you don't want to see.

That was my problem with Super, but it also worked in a way that it didn't with Kickass. Guy loses girl and guy wants to get girl back. And by the end of the movie, I'm pretty much rooting for Kevin Bacon's druglord character because the protagonists have been pretty bad. Crimson Bolt's (probably) killed several people for very mild disturbances, and Boltie (totally) raped him. So when Boltie died I didn't really feel much compassion. And I was kind of glad that Sara left in the end even though he "got her back." That's what he deserved. I'm glad she's off drugs again, and Dwight from the Office is back being Dwight from the Office.

And that's realistic storytelling. My theory stems from the fact that the beam-up thing at the beginning is right after a very emotional scene, similar to the ones in Super. But it also happens in like 2 seconds. The soundtrack represents everything the kid dreams about to cope with the traumatic event at the beginning. So just like 12 Monkeys, everything's just being manipulated by a child's mind. To me, that was something I haven't seen before. Movies either take place in a galaxy far far away or in your own world, and for whatever reason GotG was the perfect mix of the two. It's not the best movie I've ever seen or anything, but it was the last time I felt seriously excited at a movie, laughing and crying a lot more than all the kids in the theatre.

Aelric - 2014-12-14

Farscape was doing a similar mix, Zest. You might like it.

infinite zest - 2014-12-14

Ya Farscape was pretty much my favorite show growing up.

Hooker - 2014-12-14

I'm with you, bias. I really wanted to like this movie but it was just one derivative superhero and/or comedy cliche after another. This scene in particular is just the Hulk "puny God" scene from Avengers. I just don't see what other people seem to see in this movie.

fedex - 2014-12-15

To me personally, it was like the torch-carrying successor to Battle Beyond the Stars, a cheeseball Sci-fi comedy/drama I saw when i was young but which had a similar emotional impact on me at the time, akin to "...this is like seeing the pages of Heavy Metal (metal hurlant) come to life!"

Oscar worthy? Not really, but certainly did what it set out to do, for me at least.

fedex - 2014-12-15

I'm also counting on you guys to make "inappropriate smiling" a linked tag soon!

Gmork - 2014-12-14

It does irk me that anything that is slightly above mediocre is hailed as cinematic genius these days, but I genuinely enjoyed this movie.

Rocket didn't annoy me as much as I expected, but it's still kind of silly.

Say, do these guys ever run into Lobo? Or is he DC? I can never remember.

takewithfood - 2014-12-14

Lobo is DC, yeah.

Binro the Heretic - 2014-12-14

Who the fuck is hailing it as "genius"? I have yet to hear anyone refer to "Guardians of the Galaxy" as genius.

Lots of people told me, "It's fun, you'll like it." but nobody ever said it was high art or anything.

RockBolt - 2014-12-14

Yeah, the general consensus has been "hey its a superhero movie that is fun and colorful!" as compared to the dour, 9/11 fest of Man of Steel perhaps- nobody is clamoring for a Best Picture nomination.

infinite zest - 2014-12-14

Well, the first Star Wars was nominated for Best Picture, and Birdman sure seems like it'll be in the running. Birdman's a tad more cerebral but I think I liked GotG more as far as a Superhero movie (and yes I believe that Birdman is a Superhero movie but you have to see it to find out.) Wild will probably be in the running too, but I can't think of too many other movies that deserve it. Oh I'm sure Boyhood will be in there too, much to certain peoples' chagrin. I won't know because I don't ever plan on seeing it. I was a bit surprised that Avatar got nominated since it was just a pretty CGI fuckfest with decent acting and predictable plot, so who knows?

infinite zest - 2014-12-14

Oh wait and Interstellar. I haven't seen it yet but it seems pretty predictable. And Inherent Vice.

So those are my predictions for best picture nominee.

Interstellar, Birdman, Wild, Guardians of the Galaxy, Inherent Vice, Theory of Everything.. probably a few others.

Toy Story 3 was nominated as well as District 9, which were nothing but popcorn movies, so you never know with those crazy Hollywood types.

StanleyPain - 2014-12-14

Interstellar was a fantastic movie, I thought, but I seriously doubt it will win anything except maybe effects and sound or something. Gravity took all of the token "intelligent sci-fi" awards last year, Interstellar is probably late to the party.

Gmork - 2014-12-14

I was making a general statement, I wasn't calling this genius. I'm sure someone else was paid to, somewhere, but I haven't heard it called that myself either.

infinite zest - 2014-12-15

Yeah. Hollywood has a tendency to not nominate (or award) the same kind of movies. For example, I thought that Zero Dark Thirty was better than Hurt Locker, but it didn't win because modern warfare movies. In a way I think it's ontologically based. What America (and the rest of the world) has needed was good fun escapism like GotG. I'm not much for oscar talk but next to Birdman and Congress, it was my favorite film of the year.

DerangedGoblin - 2014-12-15

I think there's a weird thing going on here, and it's the same thing that happens with Rotten Tomatoes. Rotten Tomatoes, doesn't rate films, it gauges how many people liked it. It's binary. A film with 89% doesn't mean it's 89% perfect, it means 89% of the critics liked it.

I don't think anyone is saying Guardians in a revolution in the medium and should be hailed as the day film changed forever, it's just that everybody came out and said "Yeah, that was fun in a well-made and deliberate way."

More people like Sharknado than Requiem for a Dream, but that doesn't mean they think it's a better film.

Maggot Brain - 2014-12-15

Saw it, liked it at the time, can't remember a thing.

infinite zest - 2014-12-15

That's kind of what I liked about it. The first time I saw it as a caregiver so I was completely sober, and the second time I just went alone and snuck in some whiskey (don't tell) and in both cases, sober or kinda in the bag, I still couldn't give you a very decent synopsis. I think that was sort of the charm for me. I'd liken it to being a kid in the 70s and watching the first Star Wars. You're not interested in all the mechanics, you're just thinking "damn this is really fucking cool! Wait, what just happened? I gotta see that again."

John Holmes Motherfucker - 2014-12-15

Forgot most of the movie, but I can't say the words "WE ARE GROOT" out loud without getting all weepy. Wish I was kidding.

John Holmes Motherfucker - 2014-12-15

You know, it's not like no one has been releasing dark, angsty comic book movies.

infinite zest - 2014-12-15

I know what you mean. I never thought I'd tear up a bit to The Runaways' Cherry Bomb.
