Is Bill Cosby the US's Jimmy Saville?

yogarfield - 2014-11-20

Not really. Cosby didn't go for the kiddies, nor does he have ties to any higher-ups in politics. Also Saville wasn't hawking Jello, or whatever sweetened gruel they for dessert in the UK.

5 for Cosby's rape face, clearly evident at :01.

Bort - 2014-11-20

And check out how he's shaking his junk like a Jell-o Jiggler around 0:48. Recontextualization, you've done it again!

Maggot Brain - 2014-11-20

Is a "snake doctor" a kind of Plautdietsch rapist?

gravelstudios - 2014-11-20

I feel the need to point out that Bill Cosby has not been convicted of anything yet.

TeenerTot - 2014-11-20

What does that mean?

il fiore bel - 2014-11-20

It means he hasn't been convicted of anything yet.

He's only been accused fifteen times.

Bort - 2014-11-20

It's a fair point that he hasn't been convicted, but (and of course there's a "but") there's also the small matter that a rather large number of women all seem to be telling the same or similar stories, with little hope of financial gain, and at least one or two are professional types who stand to lose far more if they're lying.

There aren't too many possibilities when a woman accuses a man of rape:

1) He actually raped her.
2) She's scared of someone else and is lying about her activities to protect herself.
3) Hopes of a financial settlement.
4) Desire to ruin the man.
5) She's literally insane.
6) There is a conspiracy organizing the whole thing.

I have trouble believing all these women are 2 thru 6.

infinite zest - 2014-11-20

Pardon my pun, but the proof is in the pudding, and that's through Cosby's silence on the allegations and the cases settled out of court.

StanleyPain - 2014-11-20

It's true that Cosby hasn't been convicted of anything, but the evidence thus far is not particularly in his favor, especially the pay-offs through his agency to one of the women for reasons that are a vague at this point.

I'm sure it's also not helping Cosby's case that over the years he has been an infamous douchebag of the highest order to members of the press (especially those who have not covered his career kindly).

Sexy Duck Cop - 2014-11-20

As a person without any critical thinking skills, I would like to remind everyone that Bill Cosby is innocent until proven guilty. Yes, over two dozen women have come forward with extremely similar stories. Yes, virtually none of these women wanted any form of publicity or financial compensation. Yes, they cite specific details that corroborate with the stories of others. Yes, those details were unavailable to the public. Yes, he based a stand-up routine about how date rape is hilarious and normal. Yes, the wealthy and powerful have innumerable resources to obstruct the legal process and ensure there is virtually no chance he'll ever see a trial by jury.

But remember: innocent until proven guilty. Unless he literally walks into a courtroom and a man in a powdered wig slams a gavel and sends him to jail, these women are all liars.

infinite zest - 2014-11-20

You're right. I knew a high school choir teacher who got accused of sexually abusing 2 students, which turned into 4, etc. and to this day I still believe his innocence but he damned himself by not hiring a Lawyer and defending himself out of pride. I guess I'll never know because he died in prison. Cosby's silence could be something similar, and he was caught off guard on his book tour when he was asked questions that nobody had really thought of asking until Burress brought it up and it went viral rather quickly.

il fiore bel - 2014-11-20

On the one hand, I hope none of these women are lying. On the other, I also hope Cosby isn't the piece of shit predator they're making him out to be. No matter how you look at it, fifteen people coming forward all at once is not good news. If any of the stories are true, that means this guy has been hurting a lot of people for years, not counting the ones who don't come forward. But if none of the allegations can be proven, then they put an innocent man through hell for no good reason, and I fear no one is going to believe the next woman who accuses someone else of rape.

Bort - 2014-11-20

"but he damned himself by not hiring a Lawyer"

Cosby's got lawyers.

There is the question of why the alleged victims didn't go to the police, but there's a pretty good one (on top of all the usual ones): when you're an aspiring actress, the last thing you want to be known for is accusing the lovable Bill Cosby of rape. Being raped is a terrible thing, but destroying your own career afterwards is a self-inflicted wound. I suspect Cosby knew this, and was counting on it.

Bort - 2014-11-20

"but there's a pretty good one"

There's a pretty good REASON, is what I meant to say.

il fiore bel - 2014-11-21

I'm disappointed in the amount of people asking "well, why did they wait so long?!"

If anyone has to ask that question, I'd say that answers the question.

infinite zest - 2014-11-20

Schlangendoktor literally means "snake doctor" but it's more commonly used as something more of a pejorative I think. From what I can tell this was the original German intro.

snothouse - 2014-11-20

I recently read "Furious Cool" the biography of Richard Pryor. There are a lot of very odd instances of Cosby showing up at points in Pryor's life when things were especially unstable. He doesn't come across as an especially calming presence.
It's also widely speculated he owns a workprint of Uncle Tom's Fairy Tales, the unfinished Pryor movie. No real reason to share that last bit, but when this man passes on, he, along with every other entertainer of his era, will die with a lot of untold secrets.

ShiftlessRastus - 2014-11-20

That reminds me of Eddie Murphy's story about Cosby and Pryor. Near the end, Pryor had the perfect response to Cosby's moral sanctimony:

You're in good company, Hannibal.

il fiore bel - 2014-11-22

Don't be trying to spread that filth flarn filth here!

Sexy Duck Cop - 2014-11-21

Just to be clear, I was being sarcastic earlier. This man is a fucking serial rapist.
