Growing up, I was basically conditioned to hate Haggard because my parents were basically who the song criticized. Even though my dad was drafted, he still protested. Anyway they went to see Bob Dylan and Merle Haggard co-headlining, maybe 10 years ago, and I guess they did this song together. It's kind of like imagining Biggie and Tupac doing Hit 'Em Up together.
