paging SolRo

That guy - 2014-11-02

btw, watch the monologue from this episode if you want to see a terrible one

Rodents of Unusual Size - 2014-11-03

I want to hear SolRo go off on me again because I dared to criticize Islam and he thinks I must be a Christian now.

PS I'm not.

PSS: the majority of Muslims hold abhorrent beliefs.

Nominal - 2014-11-03

SolRo is busy going after rape apologists for giving Bayonetta 2 higher than a 7/10, after which he has an appointment with Baleen over Israel. He'll get back to you as soon as he has an opening.

bongoprophet - 2014-11-03

Maybe it is just because Rodents made 10 or so comments on this post, but are we suddenly not thinking that Maher is a generalizing toad?

5 stars for smug

also:

"PSS: the majority of Muslims hold abhorrent beliefs."

don't go down that road

That guy - 2014-11-03

Nominal made me laugh. For that, I thank him.

bongoprophet- yeah, ROUS may have stated that too strongly, but I bet you if he pulled up the facts on the punishment for being gay in every majority Muslim country, he might have you reconsidering a little bit, too.

infinite zest - 2014-11-02

I think I'm getting the context here: Maher, as an atheist (and kind of an asshole atheist if you as me) said something about how fundamentally all of Islam shares the same ideologies as radical factions like Al Qaeda and Isis? This is the first I've heard of this and I don't watch the show, so if someone wants to clue me in that'd be great. On a different note, I never took Maher seriously, any more than I would Stewart, Oliver, Colbert or even Kilborn. If Colbert said what Maher said, it would've been of his character. If Stewart said it, it's because he's a self-deprecating Jew. Oliver can tell the world to fuck off and people would still applaud and laugh. I don't know, at its heart this is still a comedy news show, correct?

Rodents of Unusual Size - 2014-11-03

No, that's pretty incorrect.

The argument was over polls taken about what Muslims believe and a majority of them believe, in various countries, that you should jail anyone that offends Islam ie drawings of Muhammad, as well as the majority wanting homosexuality to be illegal, even in Britain and the US, as well as the majority in Pakistan, Iran and Egypt thinking its okay to stone women to death for adultery, etc etc.

So the fact is Bill Maher is right about this and Ben Affleck called him racist because Ben Affleck is a stupid twat.

Also I got called racist for defending him and also posting that Islam is filled with stupid twats, which it is.

Rodents of Unusual Size - 2014-11-03

And basically Bill is right that Muslim countries do not have democratic societies and that Democrats don't stand up for rights in those countries because they are a bunch of pussies.

Rodents of Unusual Size - 2014-11-03

I think the best reaction was from the idiot who went on MSNBC that compared Bill Maher to the grand dragon of the KKK

spikestoyiu - 2014-11-03

Are people so quick to defend Islam because the conservative-types hate them so much? Is that the deal? Because I know we generally have zero problem laying into the Christians, the Catholics, and all of their assorted bullshit.

Thanks Caminante. Your hashtag saved me a couple of paragraphs.

Bort - 2014-11-03

You two assholes really love short Muslims, don't you.

EvilHomer - 2014-11-03

You know, I just realized something. There's a surprising lack of Muslim pony OCs. I can find a few pics of humanized ponies dressed as Muslims (mostly humanized Fluttershy), but the only Muslim pony OC I've been able to dig up is this one:

What's up with that? You'd think that MLP would be very popular with Arabs, seeing as the region is famous for its horses and all.

So first you complain about the Islams (always blowin' things up!) then you pivot into "these opinions are dumb because they came from the online internet!"

With this rant, Bill Mahr has officially entered his cranky grandpa period.

EvilHomer - 2014-11-03

Bill Maher has always been a cranky grandpa. I believe at this point he's entered his "dangerously violent grandpa who keeps a stash of meth and CP under the bed" period.

That guy - 2014-11-03

"the Islams always blowin' things up" is a pretty lame strawman of Maher's thoughts, and I don't even like Maher much

Bort - 2014-11-03

In general I wouldn't want Bill Maher to speak at my commencement; I'm not sure he has anything to say.

But about that original interview that sparked all this. The problem with what Maher and Harris is that they keep wanting to say that the abhorrent stuff we associate with Islam (such as misogyny and intolerance) are central to Islam, and the problem with that is, as soon as you say that, you're also saying that there is no such thing as a good Muslim. And that's most certainly bigoted.

I don't have a problem saying that misogyny and intolerance are big problems in the Muslim world; there are certainly a lot of Muslims with beliefs that do not jibe with my (Western secular) view of how things should be. That said, I am not about to say that all Muslims subscribe to those beliefs, or that a Muslim who doesn't subscribe to them is somehow a less earnest, less devout Muslim.

I'm not misreading Maher and Harris here. On the original Affleck interview, Harris described those Muslims as "nominal" Muslims who don't believe in killing apostates -- in other words, if you don't subscribe to the apostate-killing interpretation of Islam, then you are at best a Muslim in name only. (For Maher's part, his role in things was mostly to nod along to Harris, and to cite statistics that "prove" that Islam is given to evil or to read quotes from the Koran.) The point where Maher, Harris, Affleck, and I could all come together is: where misogyny and intolerance are practiced, it's wrong, including big parts of the Muslim world. I don't think we'd disagree as far as that goes. Except that Maher and Harris aren't content to leave it at that; they seem hell-bent on making Islam itself the problem.

Maher made mention of that Aslan fellow claiming that he (Bill) is not a bigot; he would have also done well to repeat what Aslan said about literal readings of religious texts, and there are only two groups of people who believe in literal readings: fundamentalists and atheists. Everyone else reads their texts (if they read them at all) with an eye to reinforcing the values they already have, and working their faith into their lives in whatever way seems to make the most sense. And as for whether Mohammed called for slaughtering infidels and rode a horse to heaven, that was then and this is now.

EvilHomer - 2014-11-03

"In general I wouldn't want Bill Maher to speak at my commencement; I'm not sure he has anything to say."

LOL, that's a good point.

EvilHomer - 2014-11-03

In regards to the Berkeley petition, Bill Maher is correct. As always with Bill, I am having trouble gauging his sincerity, as well as his commitment to the arguments he's putting out there (question to Maher listeners: has he commented on speaker-bans before? What does he say in regards to figures like the Ultimate Warrior, Karl Rove, or Anne Coulter?). I would also like to point out that liberalism no longer exists in any large-scale, historically meaningful form, and that respect for freedom of speech is at an all time low, not just on college campuses but in American society as a whole. But character issues and cynicism aside, he's spot-on.

If he's wrong about Islam, that's all the MORE reason to have him go to Berkeley, so he can be engaged and refuted.

That guy - 2014-11-03

"liberalism no longer exists in any large-scale, historically meaningful form, and that respect for freedom of speech is at an all time low, not just on college campuses but in American society as a whole"

....and so how do you think that battle gets fought? Or maybe I don't get what you're pointing out...?

EvilHomer - 2014-11-03

"In regards to the Berkeley petition, Bill Maher is correct."

The section you quoted was specifically addressed by: "But character issues and cynicism aside, he's spot-on." I am simply being cynical. More specifically, I am calling into question the sincerity of Mr Maher's attempts to ingratiate his audience with the old "you kids are freedom-loving free-thinkers, give yourselves a hand!" routine. BUT! I am not saying he is wrong. On the contrary, I agree with him, at least as far as the Berkeley issue goes.

EvilHomer - 2014-11-03

I'm serious about the question to Maher listeners, BTW. If anyone can provide some prior statements by Mr Maher in regards to similar issues, I'd appreciate it.

That guy - 2014-11-03

I can't say that it's easy to feel comfortable that Maher is ever sincere. No thanks. Sincerity is not a shining facet of his charisma.
