Jesus, fuck. I shouldn't have watched that.

Even after its companion got shot, the other one wouldn't run because it thought the human was its friend.

Fuck that asshole with a chainsaw.

Old People - 2014-10-22

Do we know what these innocent dogs of peace did to deserve such treatment? The description on the youtube video is noticeably vague on that point.

infinite zest - 2014-10-22

Ugh. It gets worse. Reading a few youtube comments, I sort of assumed it was past of a stakeout, like the dogs were trained to protect the suspect and were behaving violently, etc. but NOPE. A neighbor called 911 because two pit bulls were loose. And the one that was shot was 6 months old.

I mean, correct me if I'm wrong, but I thought for cases like this they wait to get animal experts. I understand the potential fear for two big dogs roarming around, but it's not necessarily like "there's someone in my house with a gun right now" sort of call. In fact, I thought that in animal emergencies, cops or fire department or whoever weren't allowed to carry standard firearms, just tranquilizers. I don't know. I'd like to see the whole video released. As hard as it was for me to watch this, I'd like to see if there was any earlier provocation, because this isn't any different than me killing an outdoor house cat because it started following me.

EvilHomer - 2014-10-22

Not watching this, but it's pretty standard procedure for cops to murder dogs in cold blood for no good reason, from Ruby Ridge clear on up to that dog who recently got shot in Chicago in front of her six-year-old owner. It may even be a law at this point: if thou art a cop, thou SHALT shoot every dog thou seest, for verily they might elsewise bite thee.

Old People - 2014-10-22

I don't know the story that led to this incident, but I do know that users of this site seem to have a knee-jerk resentment of law enforcement. Google "dog attacks on police" to get a sense of the other side to this coin.
I was on a routine job with the Fire Dept, a CO alarm & odor of smoke at a suburban residence, when the owner's German Shepard lunged at me in a corridor. It tried to bite my leg and got a mouthful of my turnout gear. I was carrying the irons, and gave the animal a smart bop on the head with the butt of the axe. It retreated and its owner managed to retain control of it; the man then called me a "coward" and threatened a lawsuit. I told him to go right ahead and report me to the officer on scene, but I guess he never got around to it. I was shaking like a leaf afterwards, and I'm damn glad that I was effectively armored when this innocent and helpless animal decided to give me some love nips.
Dogs are like people in that they have a range of personalities, usually dependent on how they've been raised. As with a person, if they display aggressive behavior they should be dealt with accordingly. I'd really like to know the backstory around any shooting before I go calling for the cop's head.

The Great Hippo - 2014-10-22

Old People, if people here seem to have a knee-jerk resentment of law enforcement, that might just be because law enforcement regularly escalates to violence -- up to and including fatal violence -- in situations when violence is not necessary.

It sucks that that happened to you; it sounds very shitty. That's not what's happening in this video, though, and no background beyond 'the dogs had rabies' is going to be sufficient to justify it.

EvilHomer - 2014-10-22

That dog *bit* you, and you *didn't* kill him. If a fireman, who actually does have a statistically dangerous job, and who is not presumably trained to handle situations like that, can implement an effective non-lethal solution to an actual attack, then surely a cop should be able to deal with a harmless puppy without escalating the ROE and shooting it in the face?

infinite zest - 2014-10-22

Yeah. I used to live next to this guy with a big rottweiler and she scared the shit out of me: all through the night I'd just hear "bang bang bang" on the door (protip: Don't own a big dog if you live in a tiny apartment.) Anyway I'd be out in the hallway as we had community showers and sometimes the dog was just out there, barking away at me until the owner came. If the dog had charged at me and I was cornered, I honestly can't say what I would've done to protect myself. If I left the community door open or something and she went outside, I probably would've called the cops too, A.) because it was a busy street and B.) because there were a lot of children around too.

And that's all that happened here. Two pet pitbulls got out and were roaming the streets and a neighbor called the cops. Like I said I'd like to see the whole thing, and any prior incidents that may have led to the officer's decision, but this seems pretty cut and dry: if the dogs were aggressive, they would've made a move immediately after the officer made the sounds. They were just walking into what looks like a pretty good spot for their capture and return.

urbanelf - 2014-10-22

I don't understand.

jreid - 2014-10-22

MY GOD, IT'S COMING RIGHT FOR US!

Old People - 2014-10-22

Reminds me of Guy Young from Eastbound and Down: "LOOK at me!"

BHWW - 2014-10-22

More on this:

http://www.myfoxdfw.com/story/26818734/dog-owners-dispute-offi cers-account-of-shooting-pit-bull-to-death

“I raised my duty weapon to the ready position – pointed at the growling dog’s head. As soon as I lifted my pistol, the dog began coming up the hill, continuing to growl and display its teeth… I fired three shots at it.”

fluffy - 2014-10-22

yes, because dogs know what firearms are and what it means to have something pointed at them

Adham Nu'man - 2014-10-22

Not defending this guy's actions in any way, but when I was a kid I had a toy gun (which didn't shoot anything) and I pointed at a non-aggressive dog that was about 20 meters away and that fucker went batshit insane and came right for me.

That guy - 2014-10-22

I'm not defending the cop who's probably lying but, fluffy:
What?

Billy the Poet - 2014-10-22

Feed that fucking pig to a dog.

yogarfield - 2014-10-22

Yep, fuck this. Once again calling out to Boomer: DON'T WATCH THIS BUDDY

Pillager - 2014-10-22

What the fuck do you have to do to get fired as a cop?

Beside ratting on another cop.

oddeye - 2014-10-23

That's pretty much it.

crasspm - 2014-10-22

No, come on, this doesn't happen.

chairsforcheap - 2014-10-22

their fucking tails were wagging...

Ryo-Cokey - 2014-10-22

Tail wagging in dogs is a sign of excitement, not friendly intent. Watch a bit of YouTube's wonderful assortment of dog attack videos and you'll see plenty of them with dogs wagging away as they maul the living hell out of someone.

EvilHomer - 2014-10-23

It depends on the posture; stiffer and higher can signify aggression, limper and lower signify fear or submission. Happy dogs are usually somewhere in between, but you have to look at the whole body posture.

takewithfood - 2014-10-22

Walking while Pit Bull.

dairyqueenlatifah - 2014-10-22

Not watching this. :-(

Are you legally justified in shooting a man if it's to protect your dog from being murdered?

Nominal - 2014-10-22

How as the cop supposed to know the dog didn't have a gun?

American Standard - 2014-10-23

Refuse to watch this. Cops are trash.

Cube - 2014-10-23

Well, the dog was brown.

oddeye - 2014-10-23

Case closed, go back to your homes. Officer Dogkillski, 2 weeks paid vacation for your brave and heroic actions.

Gmork - 2014-10-23

I hope that cop gets his fingers chopped off in a car accident.

jimmyboblahey - 2014-10-23

Gangsta as fuck, but why would you film this?
