Dude with the tank shoes.

sasazuka - 2014-09-23

Now I know what the REAL GHOSTBUSTERS' cartoon Egon Spengler's tubular pompadour would look like in live action. It's rather disturbingly phallic for a hairdo, to be honest.

I was djing an event for an organization I work for, and stumbled across these guys. It was mostly kids, so I was looking for Rednex/Captain Jack/Aqua type material. Most children won't know that Tubthumper is a song about alcoholism or that Cartoon Heroes might be encouraging cartoon reincarnation via suicide, but some of Cartoon's lyrics are incredibly fucked up (1:43 or so is a good example, but it gets a lot weirder than that)

infinite zest - 2014-09-23

Also am I the only one who just hears "We're the bears who sing for Duke?"

>>Cartoon Heroes might be encouraging cartoon reincarnation via suicide

Really?! Please tell me you can confirm this!!! Cartoon Heroes is my favorite Aqua song (at least tied with My Oh My) and I was working on a piano arrangement just last month. As you know, I'm really fascinated with Otherkin/cartoonophile crap, and the idea that people can transport themselves to the magical world of Toontown/Cool World/Equestria or wherever, through suicide, is one of the most consistently amusing pieces of bizarro New Age nonsense that you find in those circles. If the song was really about that - or even if it's just non-confirmed speculation that is sufficiently convincing and potentially endorsed by members of the band -, oh holy shit that would be so awesome!

I said "might." the line "Be original and just remember that but what we do is what you just can't do" is implying transfiguration. All I was saying is it's lyrics have a deeper meaning, and aren't necessarily for the children I was putting together my set for. But no, the song doesn't encourage suicide or reincarnation any more than Eminem's Stan "might" encourage people to do what Stan does. Growing up, there was this house in my neighborhood we called the "Hell House" (its address was 7734, no shit) and this depressed housewife gunned down her three kids and then herself, because New Age person told her that she was a queen in another life, so maybe that effects my opinion on that Aqua line, but as far as I know, you have to read pretty deep into it. Other than that it's just a fun song.

SteamPoweredKleenex - 2014-09-24

How does "Be original and just remember that but what we do is what you just can't do" imply transfiguration? The whole song is about being a cartoon superhero and how their abilities follow cartoon physics/reality and not real life.

If anything, the song's message is "we can do this shit because we're cartoons, so don't try this at home."

How does someone saying that what they do is something you can't because they're not real a call to be transfigured?

infinite zest - 2014-09-24

I think that was also because I just watched The Congress (video's in the hopper) when I posted that. I won't give anything away and you don't need to vote it up or anything cuz it's just a trailer, but I have a feeling you'd like it as much as I did :)

infinite zest - 2014-09-24

SPK it depends on the person. W/r/t my comment above, no person should do that, and you're right: it isn't saying "come join us." But for me, anyway, every time I'm at a show, I picture myself on the stage. Same with movies: I try to find myself in the protagonist's shoes. It's almost like a challenge for a struggling musician like me. If a therapist told me to blow my brains out and I'd be reincarnated into someone who could learn a more practical instrument, not get married too young, etc. I'd call bullshit. But we're not all so level headed. Again, I have no evidence that this song condones transfiguration via suicide- it's just an innocent song. But hearing Cartoons, Aqua etc. at the thing I was djing was kind of weird to me, because that's just the way my mind works.

EvilHomer - 2014-09-24

Well shit, you got me all excited for nothing.

I don't care, though. I choose to believe.

infinite zest - 2014-09-24

me too :)

EvilHomer - 2014-09-24

Maybe you do turn into a cartoon if you kill yourself? But the catch is, you come back as *these* guys, and you're forced to sing crappy Eurodance songs in a D-list Rednex knockoff-band for all eternity. Your macabre yet kid-friendly performances provide psychic nourishment for the members of Aqua, keeping them forever young. Lene Nystrom is actually a three-thousand year old pagan sorceress; all Eurodance bands are actually her servants, bound to her by the black arts.

THEIR VIDEOS ARE REAL DOCUMENTARIES AND WARNINGS! WAKE UP PEOPLE!

This needs to go into that videogame somehow.

BlisteredButtress - 2014-09-24

Well I know if you're killed by a cartoon you become one...

memedumpster - 2014-09-24

Holy crap, you guys, for a moment I thought there really were people who thought killing themselves would cause metempegatosis (I am working on the pun, okay, this is a rough draft) and I thought the sungazers just got outcrazied.

You cut ten years off my life.

EvilHomer - 2014-09-25

There are. I can't think of any dedicated communities offhand, but I have observed ideas like that in various ASHer/otherkin communities.

EvilHomer - 2014-09-25

Actually, you know what? It's interesting, because earlier today I was watching one of Aqua's newerish music videos, My Mamma Said, from their late, depressing period. THAT song is all about dying, and makes *explicit* reference to transfiguration - not necessarily through suicide, but still.

Pay particular note to the rapper guy's chorus: "she crossed to the multiverse".

!!!

You can find a similar theme in another of their goth-period songs, Playmate to Jesus. Supposedly that song was originally about space travel, but the *video* is obviously about death and transcendence (it even ends with a metaphoric transfiguration scene).

Woah shit. I was working on a project for this band that's more-or-less about funerals on interstellar vessels. It's a beautiful show (the song Unicorn in the 73q is one I nepotoistically submitted,) but I had no idea aqua was so far ahead.

infinite zest - 2014-09-24

They do get a million points if that beer tapper's also a pickup for the saxaphone, but we might never know the truth.
