RT is a reaction: in the article above, RT's founder says it's an effort to "establish a news channel that would counter CNN and BBC -- with a Moscow spin". It's like a logical conclusion for any country or region that gets bad press from anywhere.

The Fox News comparison is probably closest, except RT indulges both left and right-wing conspiracy nuts. They have gimmick guests for publicity and for passive recognition of people who buy into their paranoia, just like other news outlets, especially Fox. But I'd say Fox goes on record as having the most blatant propagandist: Glenn Beck.

RT is shitty but you have to take it on a case-by-case basis. I mean, look at what they air on the history channel; mass media isn't about informing people.

RT is just as government-owned as the BBC, and often goes out of it's way to compare itself (favourably!) to the British state media. You clearly understand some of the problems inherent with the BBC's structure; now you need only examine the other side with that same skepticism.
