This is how governments get people to do things like going to war.

Old_Zircon - 2014-09-17

Pop music can be good but serious, adult pop music fans are THE WORST.

infinite zest - 2014-09-17

I submitted this at the same time, but was looking for "Kanye West." My dupedar is a little off. Plus your tags are better than mine. This is really too much: "misunderstanding" my ass. I've been to shows where skinheads, complete with swastikas, protected someone who wanted to get a better view but got close to the pit. This is just.. I don't know. It's not like this is the first time Kanye has performed in a large arena, all of which have ADA (I'm assuming it's ADA in Australia too) seating. I'll give him the benefit of the doubt that he probably didn't know where those seats were, but he should've let it go about a minute in, not asking "is he in a wheelchair?" but something like "oh shit sorry he's in a wheelchair," then telling the audience to shut the fuck up so he can start the song.

There was something similar when I was working at the Opera, which got less than a positive review from a reviewer who noted that at the standing ovation, the "back row was certainly not standing but luckily they were closest to the exits" or something to that effect. THOSE ARE THE ADA SEATS YOU IDIOT! He got fired over that comment. Both should've known better. I can't even fathom the humiliation these poor souls must have felt, not only from Mr. West himself, but the ensuing audience going along with it.

oddeye - 2014-09-17

This guy is shit. Everything about him is shit. He is a shit.

Harveyjames - 2014-09-17

He's a fucking genius. ...Who does dumb things sometimes.

EvilHomer - 2014-09-17

He's a fucking genius in the field of being total shit. He is the world's leading expert in he is a shit.

EvilHomer - 2014-09-17

I will never forgive him for ripping off both AKIRA and Daft Punk at the same time.

Harveyjames - 2014-09-17

He sampled Daft Punk. Hip-hop has always been the art of recontexualisation. Plus, Daft Punk starred in that video and they also worked with Kanye on his Yeezus album. I'm pretty sure they don't feel ripped off!

Did you read Lou Reed's review of Yeezus?

http://thetalkhouse.com/music/talks/lou-reed-of-the-velvet-und erground-talks-kanye-wests-yeezus/

Kanye is probably the most exciting musical artists in America, whose incredible music is overshadowed by his public image.
I'm a huge fan.

Harveyjames - 2014-09-17

...that's right, "artists"

(no, that's a typo)

EvilHomer - 2014-09-17

Lou Reed is one of the few musicians more shit than Kanye. The only thing saving Lou from being the Arch-Duke of Shit is the fact that Kanye is by far the bigger asshole of the two. He's the harmless, dodering grandpa; Kanye is the moustache twirling supervillain.

infinite zest - 2014-09-17

Yeah. I never bothered with listening to him, but I'm sure I've heard that song. Never noticed the AKIRA before. I dunno, he's a bit of a conundrum. This incident pisses me off, and really makes me question him not as an artist, but as a human being. He was kind of popular in college with the backpack crowd, but I always prefered Cannibal Ox, Hymie's Basement, stuff like that. There's nothing "genius" going on here that he's not just ripping off. And that's fine; the same argument could be made for Radiohead's popularization of IDM.

But so what. What's just a facepalm, or a "should've thought of it first" thing. I didn't really care with the whole interruption that got everybody's panties in a bunch: if my favorite movie didn't win the oscars, I'd probably say that too. And in a way I did: Wolf of Wall Street was a much better movie than 12 Years a Slave. I wasn't presenting at the Oscars, and his six words about Bush post-Katrina were frankly something that everyone was thinking but wouldn't say out loud. But this.. this is just insanity. It's more celebrity news that I like to read about, but his "apology" is so insincere: say I tell an offensive joke and the person says "hey my brother was _____." "sorry man, really I am, didn't know" (etc.) Like I said above, West could've dropped it when he had the chance, but I can only imagine how loud it was in there.

But here was Kanye's response:

“At my concerts I make sure everybody has good a time as possible. So all this demonizing me, it ain’t (sic) going to work after a while. Pick a new target, pick a new target. Cause I’m not one of these dumba— artists that you’re used to.”

Anyway, fuck that guy.

infinite zest - 2014-09-17

Reed put out some amazing material with VU, and Transformer is still one of my favorite albums, but I think we can all agree that Metal Machine Music was shit, sort of like we can all agree that Robin Williams' best role wasn't in Flubber. Difference is, Reed never did shit like this.

EvilHomer - 2014-09-17

The AKIRA references were in the video for his Daft Punk ripoff song. Reed was a nice enough guy, so I can't really say I hate him, even though he had an awful singing voice and I never liked his music (even VU). Kanye, though, Kanye is just one unending stream of douchiness, entitlement, and unwarranted self-importance. He's a mediocre rapper at best, a poor artist, and a downright horrible human being.

I can't really think of any pop musician I dislike more.

infinite zest - 2014-09-17

What's funny is early Lou Reed (back when he was writing for Tin Pan Alley and trying to make it big in pop music) actually had a pretty good voice. I mean, he's no Mike Patton (who I'd argue has the best voice in modern music, opera singers included) and a lot of that was abandoned for the Warhol aesthetics that surrounded VU. I mentioned it before, but my brother got to meet Reed, as his wife was somehow opening for his band. Like Patti Smith, likes to keep a low profile and play at little bars for little known bands. Reed just came along and was chilling backstage.

West is more like a young black Woody Allen for me. Yeah, I like some of his movies and Yeesus is a pretty interesting album if nothing else, but douches are douches.

Sputum - 2014-09-17

The irony of complaining about Kanye sampling an act like Daft Punk whose entire schtick is also sampling other musicians.

As far as I can tell the over the top bravado character Kanye West does is mostly for publicity. He offers himself up for your hate. He is a modern day christ figure.

Seriously though I think Kanye is a generally good producer and a generally bad lyricist/human being.

Harveyjames - 2014-09-17

Lou Reed was a famous asshole, actually. He had a different personal assistant every year.

"From John Cale to Andy Warhol to Bob Quine to Mike Rathke, the New York streets are littered with those who will be happy to tell you just how much of a douche bag their former friend/collaborator/bandleader is."

Point being, someone's personality has no bearing on how good their art is, and Kanye is certainly a great artist. If you want to delve deeper into Kanye's music you ought to watch his appearances on Def Poetry Jam, his performance of "Mama's Boyfriends" at the Facebook headquarters, and the last two tracks of Twisted Dark Fantasy ("Lost In The World" and "Who Will Survive In America"). But there is much, much more out there. No other rapper has such a deep, rich and varied body of work, and I can think of no other current artist whose development I'm more interested in.

EvilHomer - 2014-09-17

There's nothing ironic about it at all; we all know Daft Punk is guilty of ripping off songs, too.

Of course, there is a difference there; namely, when Daft Punk rips off songs, the results are usually pretty good! Kanye has a grand total of no good songs, and every song he samples is made the worse for it.

And Harvey, Lou Reed was a farm-league asshole. He may have been a douchebag to his personal assistants, but by pop musician standards, he was practically a saint. You're quite right in saying that one's personality has no direct bearing on whether one is a good artist or not. It just so happens that in Kanye's case, he is both a bad artist AND a bad human being.

oddeye - 2014-09-17

I don't like his music and I don't like him. They are shit.

SHIT

Azmo23 - 2014-09-18

Look, I'm happy for ya, and I'm'a let you finish, but West is the hackiest most overrated poet of our time.
calling him a genius is laughable

Spaceman Africa - 2014-09-18

Kanye West is rated just right. The guy is the embodiement of Wagner's "total art."

infinite zest - 2014-09-18

Yeah I'm aware of Reed's behavior, but that's work. I've been kicked out of bands before, and have run into said band members at a bar and it's like "no hard feelings." Even if we were at the bar, got drunk, and I was publicly, I'd probably get an apology. That's all Kanye needed to say, which he was happy to do with the (unfortunately) much more publicized Taylor Swift "incident." And you read about these little wars all the time: twitter's made it that much easier. Look at Cee Lo for example, who made a tweet that cost him his judge position on the Voice: rape is obviously much worse than what Kanye did, and his tweet was horrible, but he's done nothing but backtrack since that. West just doesn't seem to care; he's "bigger than that" and that doesn't just piss off two people at a show, but an entire community, one large enough to fill every arena in North America.

EvilHomer - 2014-09-18

Speaking of Twitter, question for the Kanye fans: is Mr West really a barely literate imbecile, or is that just an act? If it's legit, how can he be considered a genius rapper, and if it's an act, then why does he do it?

Scrimmjob - 2014-09-18

People really like to throw the word genius around, so much so that I think it has lost all meaning. Do you think that in 50 years people are going to look back and say "Kanye was such a groundbreaking and original artist, he completely changed the way we, the people of 2064, think about music and art." ?

I fucking hope not.

Stars for JHM's Lou Reed song I like that one a lot.

Spaceman Africa - 2014-09-18

Scrimmjob I can guarantee people will be saying that about Kanye

chumbucket - 2014-09-18

People spending a boatload of cash to get into a show to listen to a crowd of people sing songs while lights flash on a stage.

misterbuns - 2014-09-18

Liking Kanye West is just another part of our culture's obsession with ironic interest in terrible things. It makes perfect sense he married Kim Kardashian.

Oscar Wildcat - 2014-09-18

I thought Yeesus could heal the crippled? So much for this latter day saint.

Kid Fenris - 2014-09-18

I wonder if Kanye West still thinks Akira is better than Spirited Away. I like Akira, but c'mon.

dairyqueenlatifah - 2014-09-18

Beyond that "Jesus Walk With Me" song being kind of cool and diffrent, I can't think of a single likable thing about Kanye West or anything he's done.

His kid also has one of the most unfortunate celebrity baby names ever. Which goes perfect with the unfortunate set of parents she has.

Jet Bin Fever - 2014-09-19

Yeezus could've made them walk.
