Serena looks anorexic now.

ALSO WHO THE FUCK IS USAGI

John Holmes Motherfucker - 2014-07-06

USAGI is probably the original Japanese name of the character. I thiink I read somewhere that SAILOR MOON actually comes from Japan.

Xenocide - 2014-07-06

Even when I was a kid and didn't know they had different Japanese names, I hated the name Serena. It's far too fancy and dignified a name for someone as goofy as her. It sounds like something someone pulled from the list of rejected names for Barbie's less interesting friends.

il fiore bel - 2014-07-06

USAGI IS YOUR GODDESS.

WORSHIP THE BUNNY NOW.

EvilHomer - 2014-07-06

But wouldn't "rejected Barbie friend" be the perfect thing for Usagi?!

I wasn't totally please with Serena either, though. I would have probably named her Bambi or Cristal.

John Holmes Motherfucker - 2014-07-06

I don't actually watch the show, but lately I've been watching the transformations on the internet, and this seems more elaborate, but not more artistic or beautiful..

EvilHomer - 2014-07-06

You shut your face, John.

EvilHomer - 2014-07-06

Awww man now I read the comments and it looks like you've got a lot of company. :(

John Holmes Motherfucker - 2014-07-06

Well, there's another video comparing the old and new transformations, and I have to admit that it looks to me that what's different about the new version is that it backs away from the weird eroticism of the earlier version, which was commented on by The Nostalgia Critic here:

http://youtu.be/mziTsgji7to

I know all you hipsters hate the Nostalgia Critic, but I'm posting this here so you won't be able to pretend that I'm the first person ever to come up with the idea that the old Sailor Moon is kind of sexy,. Oh yes, this is kind of disturbing considering the supposed age of the characters. I'm now watching Inuyasha, and all the bathing and nude swimming that 15 year old Kagome does is both sort of lovely and sort of horrible. The fact that it's a cartoon ought to count for something. If this was a real 15 year skinny dipping, I don't know how I would feel about it, except that I wouldn't fucking watch it.

The newer version seems more sanitized, and is that a good thing or a bad thing? The artist in me and the moralist in me have two different opinions, but Evil Homer prefers the new version, and so it turns out that evil Homer may not really be all that evil. Who knew?

EvilHomer - 2014-07-06

Don't get me wrong, I don't think I "prefer" either version. I love the classic transformation as much as anyone. I am simply happy this exists!

And please, please don't get me started on the eroticism of Sailor Moon.

EvilHomer - 2014-07-06

Like for example, the original anime series got a flak from certain critics because they deemed it's art style to be too "boyish". The manga was drawn in a very distinct shouju-style; the characters were very slender, elegant, waify. Everyone looked like long-legged fashion dolls. The anime took a different approach: the characters were more voluptuous, with proportions closer to those you might see in popular male-oriented series, like Ranma 1/2 or DBZ. Many manga fans claimed the anime Scouts looked like Sailor Moon as envisioned by Japanese men.

Now, I actually liked that. Shoujo style doesn't really appeal to me; I preferred the anime designs to the manga ones. These new designs, though? They look like a nice compromise. I can definitely see the manga influences, but it's more subdued, less frou-frou than Naoko Takeuchi's original art. It's not what I would have done if I were in charge of the art direction, ooooohhhh no no no not by a long shot, but you know what? I think this will please the widest cross-section of fans, and that's for the best.

il fiore bel - 2014-07-06

"so you won't be able to pretend that I'm the first person ever to come up with the idea that the old Sailor Moon is kind of sexy"

I'm afraid you're about 20 years too slow, my porny friend.

The perverts were everywhere when I was RPing as Mars in the 90s, men ten to fifteen years older than me were drooling over the anime, and people would sign up at the Yahoo clubs just to link to their hentai websites.

Nikon - 2014-07-06

> I preferred the anime designs to the manga ones.

[What follows is my opinion. It's no better or worse than anyone else's opinion.]

Same here. There are a number of reasons why I liked the original anime more than the manga it's based on. Reason one is the character design of the anime series, reason two is its Japanese voice cast, and reason three is that unlike the manga, the story isn't so compressed. The slower pacing of the anime series allows us to spend time with the heroes and villains and care about them more as a result.

I guess this new transformation is okay, but it really doesn't do anything for me. The original anime is so iconic to me that I don't see the need for a remake.

BiggerJ - 2014-07-06

How the hell did Viz Media get the rights to Sailor Moon? According to this, when the licenses expires, they were non-renewable, ensuring that no Sailor Moon episodes could ever be released in the West ever ever again ever. Did someone opposing such a release die? Or is this simply a sign of the apocalypse, and we can look forward to a bunch of smug Christians vanishing and Nicolae Carpathia falling down in a plane?

A recap of the insane shit Viz Media is doing:

Western release and dub of Sailor Moon Crystal (the remake)
Western release and new dub of original Sailor Moon series including:
More accurate script including original character names
Sailor Moon Stars, the season that was never localized because of transgender character transformations
SAILORS URANUS AND NEPTUNE BEING LOVERS AND NOT COUSINS

WHAT HAPPENED WAS A FANCIFUL TALE OF CORPORATE HUBRIS!

1- Toei is the anime company that owns both Sailor Moon and Dragon Ball Z, and thus never has to produce anything else, ever. OR SO THEY THOUGHT!

2- So ten years ago, they made a weird-as-hell live action Sailor Moon TV show, with the intention of getting it dubbed and on American TV. Because America has such a long history of putting dubbed live action programming from Asia on in prime time.

3 - America responded by pointing and laughing.

4 - Toei got pissed, and rescinded the North American rights to the Sailor Moon anime from the US companies translating it.

5- Knowing that Sailor Moon was still a valuable property, Toei basically held it for ransom, telling companies that they could only have the rights to the anime if they committed to buying, translating and airing the live action show.

6- At this point I should point out that no one in Japan liked the live action show either. Sailor Moon's talking mentor cats were played by plush toys that someone just waved around, their hand barely obscured by a table or whatever. This is what they actually did.

7 - Since the live action show was box office cyanide, no one wanted to buy the rights, so the property just sat there in limbo for a decade.

8 - Then later, the 20th anniversary of Sailor Moon rolled around, coinciding with another exciting event: Toei being in serious financial trouble due to some economic Japanese stuff I don't know or care about. And neither should you. Why are you reading this?

9 - The 20th anniversary was actually two years ago. This remake was announced in 2011, then delayed a half-dozen times. It was the Half-Life 3 of anime for a little while there. Except not really, because this show exists.

10 - So with the remake in production, and a need for new revenue, Toei finally accepted that live action Sailor Moon was a money pit they were never going to dig out of. After quietly having all the actors killed, they let Viz buy the rights to the anime alone.

11 - I don't know why I know all this.

il fiore bel - 2014-07-06

Didn't know they had plans to release the live action series over here. Good move by America, that thing was hilariously stupid. I got through like half an episode and just about died when Luna "rained down" from the sky.

I was happy to hear that Viz Media jumped on both full, uncensored translations.

dairyqueenlatifah - 2014-07-06

The live action series was hilariously bad, so bad it was good at points. The story actually wasn't bad, and stayed far truer to the manga than the old anime did. Too bad they didn't want to spend any money and just hired random people off the street to do the acting, a guy with poser 3d and an Apple II to do the CGI, and filmed and directed the thing with all the production qualities of Detroit public access. Hell. daytime US soap operas rivaled that shit in terms of quality and budget display.

Of course, I watched all 49 tv episodes, as well as the special 50th wedding finale and the Birth of Venus special.

This new series is supposed to be faithful to the manga though, they swear this time. If the first episode is any indication, they're telling the truth, not that the original first episode was much different from the manga to begin with. Also, there's only 26 episodes this time around, so it'll be interesting to see how Toei handles a lack of time for filler episodes.

John Holmes Motherfucker - 2014-07-06

Well, of course this is no surprise, but I wanted to cover my ass.

poorwill - 2014-07-06

cg? ewwwwwwwwwwwwww

Nikon - 2014-07-06

Yeah, the CGI isn't doing anything for me either. The animation bank of the original still looks better because it's a set of drawings.

EvilHomer - 2014-07-06

So a few years ago, I was reading this doujin about a lonely middle-aged Japanese man who came across a "desperate housewife" personals ad for Sailor Moon. Having long since retired from being a celebrity superheroine, Usagi was now in her late 30s, overweight, and working as a call girl. The whole thing was profoundly depressing. It kept playing on this idea of Usagi and her fanbase being well past their prime, desperately trying to recapture some sparks from their lost youth. He's all smelly and awkward, she's trying to send a text to her daughter and plan out what she'll cook for dinner when Mamoru comes home from work, all while getting pounded in her barely-fitting old Scouts uniform. There's no future for either of them. No present. Just the past. It's sad.

So it's wonderful to see that this is not how the fandom will die out, at least not now, not yet. I'm glad the franchise is getting a new lease on life!

Oscar Wildcat - 2014-07-06

Five usagi rolls for the train wreck this thread was destined to be.

Nikon - 2014-07-06

Oscar was walking on a lonely street, only with a Sprite bottle, and a WWF magazine. His toughts were racing on why he was so depress, he had always spyed on the sailor scouts, ever since luna caught up with Usagi, but most of all, when Artemis joined the group. He always tought "Why am i obses with that cat?" he than realized he had a crush on Artemis!! , even tough he was a boy, even tough Artemis was a cat.But not an ordinary cat that is. He then squeezed the bottle so hard, it blew up, soaking his shirt, his pants, and his
tennis.

Oscar Wildcat - 2014-07-06

Car after car, most laden with Canadian tar sands oil, great mushroom clouds of chocking black smoke and bright flashing shockwaves as each car detonates.

memedumpster - 2014-07-06

Needle teeth and black blazing eyes of the Alleydwellers struck out at Oscar's senses as he walked past the dark shadows of the side streets. They were a cross between opossum and law men with small dicks, all knew the Alleydwellers were lethal. Oscar knew better than to lock eyes with their kind, not because he feared for his tender flesh, but because he had pressing business in the real world.

Oscar put on his mask and placed the rose gently between his teeth as he rounded the corner. There were nine girls with magical powers from the very fabric of the light universe itself who still needed a man to save them every episode.

Today was Tuesday, he would kill the Alleydwellers tomorrow, today he wanted to keep the tuxedo clean for the girls. They loved that tuxedo.

Riskbreaker - 2014-07-06

Turns out there are many Sailor Moon fans here, which is not surprising and nothing to be ashame of. Considering all the weird stuff that can happen at good ol poetv. Let us roll and have some fun!

Cena_mark - 2014-07-06

Fuck that. This show has always been one of the worst things ever and this new one looks just as dumb. I see they still have the looooooong transformation sequences that will certainly save the animators a lot of time.

il fiore bel - 2014-07-06

CENA MOON YOU'RE BACK

HAVE YOU SEEN THE FIRST EPISODE???

Cena_mark - 2014-07-06

No I haven't. Why would I watch a stupid girl show..... Yes, I know. I watch MLP:FIM, though it may look like a stupid girl show, it isn't.

EvilHomer - 2014-07-06

It's the same way with Sailor Moon. Think of the manga like G1, and the anime like FiM. Sailor Moon used to be really girly and non-badass, but then it got good, and it's totally OK for guys to be into it, as long as your favorite Scout's not ChibiUsa or some shit (Caminante...!)

It's got monsters, lesbians, girls who can cut demons in half with lighting bolts. A bunch of characters die, there's all sorts of kung fu action, and it's like wall to wall hot chicks in miniskirts. Plus, you'd really like Jupiter, because she acts like Applejack.

Caminante Nocturno - 2014-07-06

My favorite Sailor SENSHI is Mars!

Riskbreaker - 2014-07-06

and so it begins...

EvilHomer - 2014-07-06

Mars was one of my least favorite SCOUTS. She's too much of a bitch, like all the worst aspects of Twilight and Rarity. How could you possibly like her over, say, Saturn?

Cena_mark - 2014-07-06

Nothing is beginning. This ends now.

Caminante Nocturno - 2014-07-06

Wow, EvilHomer. You never struck me as the sort of person who was afraid of assertive women.

Cena_mark - 2014-07-06

There's a difference between being assertive and being a bitch. And that's not a sexist thing. There's a fine line as well with males between being assertive and being a dick. Like Jupiter is assertive, but is far more tolerable than Mars.

Caminante Nocturno - 2014-07-07

Whether it's pony or senshi, you guys clearly don't know a fine lady when you see one.

EvilHomer - 2014-07-07

Mars isn't assertive, she's just mean. Like Cena said, Jupiter is assertive. Mars is a fratbro in a skirt.

And I might not mind so much if it weren't for the fact that Mars clearly has it in for Moon. She's always making Usagi cry! She must be super jealous of Sailor Moon (best senshi). Picture Rarity, only Rarity's stuck in Rarihick mode 24/7, constantly being mean to her friends. Or Flutterbitch - naw, screw that, I won't even dignify Mars by comparing her to Fluttershy. Rarihick will do.

That's your favorite senshi. Sailor Rarihick.

Nikon - 2014-07-07

One thing I liked about the original series was Mars/Moon's arguing back and forth. They argued like a married couple.

My favorite Senshi is still Mizuno Ami/Mercury.

il fiore bel - 2014-07-07

It's true the first season is a little rough (I also blame the English dub, it wasn't kind to anyone), but Rei and Usagi eventually become close friends. Rei is the last one with Usagi before the battle with Beryl and the possessed Endymion, and is a source of comfort for her in bad times.

Aubrey McFate - 2014-07-06

I have little to no opinion of that animation (looks just fine to me, for what it's doing), but that background music is FUCKING GREAT!

Caminante Nocturno - 2014-07-06

The music for the whole episode was beautiful.

Aubrey McFate - 2014-07-10

...and the audio has been muted. Goddamnit.
