This is just about my favorite style of current music.

Father Avalanche - 2014-06-04

If im not listening to Randy Newman, I'm listening to this.

Old_Zircon - 2014-06-04

For me lately, if it's not this it's a three way tie between Hawkwind, Gerry Rafferty and Miami Vice era Jan Hammer.

Baron_Von_Bad_Beaver - 2014-06-04

I been playing a lot of Lazerhawk recently. His latest album is pretty damn good, here's a cool kids track: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UanSNzXb7GM

Oh and Powerglove is pretty good too.

CrimsonHyperSloth - 2014-06-04

Powerglove did the FarCry 3: Blood Dragon OST and I listen to that a lot.

Old_Zircon - 2014-06-04

Powerglove is pretty great.

Caminante Nocturno - 2014-06-04

You guys should totally look up Carpenter Brut.

CornOnTheCabre - 2014-06-05

I recommend just about every single video on this guy's channel for people who dig this. Miami Nights 1984 and Judge Bitch are favorites.

Does this count as retrowave? It sounds like it to me, but classifying electronic music is like identifying mushrooms to the lay person.
Cool as fuck, regardless.

Old_Zircon - 2014-06-04

I think so but I don't really pay much attention to classifications.

Jet Bin Fever - 2014-06-04

Yep, Retrowave or Outrun Electro music.

Old_Zircon - 2014-06-04

I see it called Synthwave a lot, too. Or at least Synthwave sounds exactly the same, far be it from me to pretend to understand the arcane, aspergy nuances of electronic music genres.

Gmork - 2014-06-04

Com Truise-y goodness and some great art. Insta-five.

Sudan no1 - 2014-06-04

Very cool, I also enjoyed Perturbator's contributions to the Hotline Miami soundtrack.

badideasinaction - 2014-06-04

Nice, more to add to the soundcloud stream.

yogarfield - 2014-06-04

Love it. On a pretty unrelated note, has anybody played Kentucky Route Zero?

jreid - 2014-06-04

Yes. Quality stuff, that. And this.

CrimsonHyperSloth - 2014-06-04

Not only have I played it but I'm friends with one of the creators. Awesome guy.

yogarfield - 2014-06-04

Send him compliments, and tell him to do a horror game next. Those dudes make a great atmosphere.

Old_Zircon - 2014-06-04

I'm just going to go ahead and pimp my dumb soundcloud side project here, even though it's on hold for a while while I produce an album of completely dissimilar music for some friends.

EvilHomer - 2014-06-04

Oh hey, cool! You keep alluding to your music, and I've been really interested in hearing it.

Is this stuff you produced, or stuff you actually played on?

yogarfield - 2014-06-04

I dig it OZ. That first track has shades of the Spoorloos ost.

jreid - 2014-06-04

This is fucking fantastic OZ. Thank you. You filled my night with happiness.

Old_Zircon - 2014-06-04

This is a total departure, alast year when I had some good paying editing and mastering work, I bought a bunch of cables and a few more synths and started making it. It's all done live (most of the actual sequences are prerecorded but they're all arranged and triggered in real time) to two tracks, no real mixing done. I don't even have a proper mixer in the setup anymore, just a little 90s line mixer to sum everything and have one send for reverb.

After the album's done I'm going to get more serious about writing stuff in this style, though, these are pretty improvised, mostly first takes some second takes. I've got a vocoder now, too.

Old_Zircon - 2014-06-04

Most of what I do has been kind of heavy space/psych stuff with a bunch of people (I've been in TWO bands that sometimes had four guitarists at once). This is more like a much more competent version of stuff I was doing in high school.

Old_Zircon - 2014-06-04

Thanks for the compliments, I don't really dig self-promoting in general but especially on here, so I'm glad some of you like it.

Old_Zircon - 2014-06-04

(The oldest track on there is about driving a 1984 Ford Bronco through the center of the earth, FYI).

Old_Zircon - 2014-06-04

Yogarfield, this is all me.

Old_Zircon - 2014-06-04

http://www.54evil.com/

I usually bump a thread on here when new stuff goes up.

yogarfield - 2014-06-04

I know its all you, I dig it. Just saying that first track reminded me of the soundtrack for Spoorloos. Amazing flick, amazing soundtrack. All compliments, homie. Keep up the good work.

Old_Zircon - 2014-06-04

My bad, that should have been a response to EvilHomer not you.

I haven't seen that movie I'll definitely check it out!

Old_Zircon - 2014-06-04

Oooh, I didn't realize that was "The Vanishing." Heard of it but haven't seen it yet.

Old_Zircon - 2014-06-04

*the original The Vanishing

yogarfield - 2014-06-04

Oh man. Watch it, it does not disappoint.

EvilHomer - 2014-06-05

Killer, OZ. The second one and the last one are probably my favorites! And don't worry about self-promoting; I'm the same way with my paintings and stuff, but if people aren't interested and want you to shut up, I'm sure they'll tell you.

Do you have any tips on making drum beats, for non-drummers? I'd like to do some solo stuff like this, too, but I'm a pianist and I know dick about drumming, beyond "get someone else to do it".

Riskbreaker - 2014-06-04

This sub-genre of 80s theme synth music has been named "Outrun" music, based on Sega's game Outrun.

Jet Bin Fever - 2014-06-04

I don't really like the title, though I know people have been using it. I guess it implies the movie driving montage, chase scene theme or something.

sosage - 2014-06-04

I dig this vid, love video games, and absolutely adore Outrun...and I think that is one of the worst names for a musical genre ever.

Old_Zircon - 2014-06-04

I call everything that sounds like this "Fake 80s soundtrack music" even though most of it isn't at all.

Old_Zircon - 2014-06-04

Actually lately I've been calling it "Fake early 90 soundtrack music."

I'm also a big fan of fake late 80sworkout video music:

Riskbreaker - 2014-06-04

WELL, I LIKE IT

Caminante Nocturno - 2014-06-05

Perturbator is excellent.

EvilHomer - 2014-06-05

"Caminante Nocturno favorited 'She Is Young, She Is Beautiful ... "

Heheh.

The Mothership - 2014-06-19

This is pretty good.

somedongus - 2015-01-08

Bad ass track. These guys also had a track on the Hotline Miami soundtrack.
