My grandma had a borzoi. It bit my mom, it bit my aunt, and it bit me. It even mauled my grandma, but she was too senile to care, and the rest of my family was just as dysfunctional as she was, so the dog stayed, and kept right on biting people.

I love dogs, you know this, but I have serious issues with borzois. They are assholes and you're probably better off without them.

I wonder if there are issues with inbreeding/ overbreeding causing problems in the Borzoi? On Wikipedia it's not stated, they are seen as mostly gentle Dogs, "They are gentle and highly sensitive dogs with a natural respect for humans, and as adults they are decorative couch potatoes with remarkably gracious house manners."

Your grandma's pooch could have been mental, or maybe he had some unknown stress.

Refer especially to the notes on Socialization amd Emotional Sensitivity. Reading past the author's attempt to put a positive spin on the little beasts, the picture that is painted is clear: borzoi are moody, temperamental psychopaths who will respond to all but the best owners by going full Norman Bates.

Certainly, not all borzois are bad, and a good owner might well be able to turn his vicious, murderous borzoi into a perfectly non-murderous, just cold and standoffish, asshole. But it takes a lot of training to ensure that borzois "work" around people, more so than most breeds, and my grandma just didn't have it in her. She should have bought a sweet little pitbull instead. :(

I should say, her FIRST borzoi was nice, at least as far as I recall. She had two, a male and a female, but the female died when I was only two years old. The impression I got from the stories, however, was that while the female was fine around humans, she had a lot of horrible neurotic quirks herself, mostly stemming from the fact that the male would bully her constantly - another facet of TBB, Typical Borzoi Business.

Lots of breed descriptions seem to be at odds. When I got on line, the site I liked back then was Purina's Dog breeds, I thought they were pretty good, but they could be at odds with some others. Before online I'd always refer to the Simon and Schuster book of Dogs, that seemed to be accurate for the breeds I knew about, and close to what Purina had.

One day I hope to meet a Borzoi just to see, I never seem to meet sighthounds, my first favorite would be an Afghan, I'm taken with their long locks. Yes I've been to pet shows, but only local animal shelter ones that have just mutts in their shows.

I feel lucky right now that I'm not a Borzoi!
