I'm sure I'm not the first one to say this, but I liked Metal Gear when I was a kid, when Psycho Mantis would tell you to switch controllers and read your memory card, or giving up on the first game because I was ten and WHY DOES THAT DOG KILL ME IN ONE HIT (should've read the description of the gameplay.. didn't know it was stealth I thought it was like Contra) These graphics are amazing and the story seems cool but it seems like they should just make movies out of this stuff now. A movie I might actually go see.

"Raiden, turn the game console off right now. The mission is a failure. Cut the power right now."

infinite zest - 2014-05-23

Raiden go outside and ride your bike around. It's a beautiful day. The whole "videogames are telling me not to play them," or at least questioning why I do it thing is kind of why I stopped playing videogames. The last game I played religiously at home was when I was trapped in Wisconsin winter and it was MGS3. I love the story of MGS. But I spent the whole time setting up mousetraps underneath a house.

Also when did the timeline change to incorporate current affairs like Guantanamo Bay? I sat through enough cut scenes to know that Gitmo had nothing to do with the original Foxdie project, or something like that. Maybe that was because I played it well before Guantanamo Bay was established. If they're changing the whole timeline around that's OK I guess but I dunno. Is MGS just trying to be a big metaphor for how we've fucked up the world and not a fun game where you set up mousetraps underneath a house? I promise, Konami, I'll change.

> Is MGS just trying to be a big metaphor for how we've fucked up the world

Yes, and it's been that for a long time.

infinite zest - 2014-05-23

Sounds like the intro to some Joan Baez song in the credits. Great metaphor Kojima. Change the world by buying a whole bunch of shit that won't decompose.

@infinite_zest

The USA has had that area for a while -
they assumed territorial control over the southern portion of Guantánamo Bay under the 1903 Cuban–American Treaty.

One of the things that needs to happen in this timeline is some sort of explanation for how Big Boss became the man who led the Outer Heaven Uprising in 1995. The easiest way to do that is to put him through utter hell until he becomes a man living for vengeance, like Ahab chasing his whale.

Because each Big Boss game has roughly followed a ten year or so break between games, MGSV will take place around 1984, which ties into the global dominance/total information control that Cipher/The Patriots seek.

Oh cool! Thanks! I kinda remembered that but I was just thinking of the name associated with the detention camp in 2002 or so. I've pretty much stopped following the plot since the 3rd MGS, because, well mousetraps. I also would put C4 by the mousetraps. Does that make me a monster among men?

Nikon - 2014-05-25

I never liked killing the guards and tried (whenever possible) to knock them out/tranq them/sneak by them, but in MGS 3 I'd destroy their food supplies and then leave out rotten food for them to find and eat.

Gmork - 2014-05-23

Glad I stopped at 2. The ending to that was ridiculous.

"Directed by Hideo Kojima"

see that's your problem right there

bongoprophet - 2014-05-24

I might actually play this in a few years but I don't get the whole "Hideo Kojima sucks" shtick, I found the stories of the first four MGS games to awesomely over the top and downright insane.

with so many trite game stories these day I more than welcome crazy shit

bongoprophet - 2014-05-24

*I might actually play it so I am not watching it

Nikon - 2014-05-24

I think you'll enjoy this one.

Sudan no1 - 2014-05-25

I was completely on board for MGS1-3, but MGS4 was really his "George Lucas" moment when it was clear he couldn't reign in his fanboy wanking. Revengeance was one of the better MGS games of recent years because Kojima didn't write it.

Aelric - 2014-05-24

I really enjoy these games. I really do. I used to be invested in the fiction, not so much anymore, I just like the spectacle. It's the idea that something so goofy takes itself so serious. Apparently this one is really, REALLY "serious guys about serious stuff so shut up, guys and take me seriously, for serious" and I LOVE that. the Trailer last year has a flaming flying whale in it. A fucking flying fire whale! But it wants to be taken seriously. It's like the gothy kid in High School that brings a knife to school and then goes home and watches my little pony and doesn't understand why no on takes him serious. It's sooo terrible it passes great, loops back to terrible and comes around on great again.

If they stopped at the first Solid game, I could have taken them seriously. These games have gotten so batfuck insane, It's like an MST3K marathon of glorious, hilarious awful. I hope Kojima never dies.

Nikon - 2014-05-24

For me it's the mixture of both the ridiculous and the serious that makes me love them so much. But I'm also right there with you.

Binro the Heretic - 2014-05-24

They're not actually going to show her being cut op-AAAAAAH! FUCK! FUCK! FUCK! STOP! FUCK! DAMN IT! SHIT!

infinite zest - 2014-05-24

I'm not one for bloodlust but I do think it's kind of cool.. at least when I was a kid Mortal Kombat was the big one.. so we found Time Killers at the 7-11. So really bad graphics of people getting their arms ripped off and heads chopped up was kind of why we played it. Maybe you don't want to watch it but the newest Mortal Kombat fatalities are EXTREMELY violent, much moreso than this scene, which is not meant for bloodlust but for the story. It kind of reminds me of the scene in the Hurt Locker (no spoilers if you haven't seen it) but that scene would've been pretty un-moving if they just panned the camera away or faded to black.
