A fun game. Although the final boss is a bit difficult to say the least. There is nothing like pumping up your ship over the span of a few hours to such a point that you easily can crush any enemy, only to have the rebel mothership throw you around like a rag doll.

teleporters, yo.

rhombus - 2014-05-16

Yep. Likewise, I have found that if a teleporter cannot be obtained then the use of fire bombs to take out the weapons and a cloaking device to increase evade is also a winning combination.

I like hacking, boarding drones, and mind control a lot too.

this game is so good.

This sounds great. If I hadn't just blown on a vintage Ernest P. Worrell tee shirt I'd get it.

Seriously, though, how could I resist this (even though Screen Stars shirts run small so I probably can't fit in it without losing 15 pounds)?

Was fun for a bit.

Yeah this game was fun for a bit until you realized there was only one setup that could kill the boss, then it was just a matter of the random number generator giving you that stuff.

What irked me was the expansion content. Not a single improvement to the game, in fact a lot of it made it worse. Hacker drones are just ion guns, the mind control station is just an annoyance with no defense against it, and the electric pulse hazards just drag fights out forever. The biggest beef though is that instead of fixing the boss, the #1 criticism about the game, they doubled down on it to make it even more annoying. They incorporated all the new annoying systems (mind control) into it, and now it's totally random how close the Federation base starts off to it. You might jump into the final sector with only 3 turns to beat the boss, meaning no time for repairs. Bullshit.

Mind Control can really change fights, by making the enemy attack their buddy. The upgraded versions convert the mind controlled guy into the incredible hulk, tearing them apart. I haven't had luck with cloning yet. Lanius are really fun too. I kept the human captain they give you locked on the bridge with the entire rest of the ship depressurized. They would try to board, but they would not last long.
Also, the Vulcan cannon is ridiculous, and the charge weapons are great for charging shots and launching them all at once to get through a tough shield.
I think it was a pretty damned solid addition. And it was FREE to everyone, which is goddamned generous in this day.

The best is using Mind Control to teleport enemy crew onto your ship. Ordinarily you can't teleport enemies, but while under Mind Control they count as your crew. So if you have rockin' defenses you can siphon them off one at a time to be murdered by a team of Mantis. Good times.

The game is pretty crazy hard, but if you accept that the odds are badly against you, losing doesn't feel so bad. And yeah, when I occasionally DO win on Normal, I know that the RNG probably played a big role - but I managed to capitalize on that success, so at least that's something.

It isn't perfect, but well worth the like I spent on it. Sadly, Steam crashed and lost my whole save file, and I don't yet have the heart to go about unlocking everything again. Bleh.

Ive never beat the flagship. I don't care. I'm done with that. I saw someone with a really sneaky setup take it apart piece by piece, but I do NOT have the patience to accumulate what he did and do what he did.
