Can't it be both? They've got every right to do this to themselves, and if this is what makes them happy, then that's really all that matters. But they're still tragic clowns and you can still be disgusted with them, if that's what feels right to *you*.

I think the bitterest irony here is that these people were rather good looking to begin with. With Catman, for example, he was a recluse who wanted to turn himself into a hideous freak, and through plastic surgery he accomplished that goal. These people were fairly attractive socialtes who wanted to become even more beautiful, and wound up becoming lumpy monsters. What I'm wondering is, are they aware of the irony? Or do they genuinely believe they look"better" this way?

I think in an ideal world, what's on the outside would match what's on the inside. In this case, these good people have taken it upon themselves to correct natures mistakes and make the two identical. They are now exactly what you think they are.
