Un animal mágico maravilloso.

No hay amigos ganar con ensalada, No hay amigos ganar con ensalada...

This is one of my favorite episodes. Everything from Lisa's "wonderful, magical animal" to the Troy McClure film to the barbecued pig chase is just perfect, and the ending resolution between Homer and Lisa is a stern reminder that primetime animated sitcoms could be, you know, NICE and not just 22 minutes of mean spirited sociopathic shit.

I agree, great episode. But unfortunately this did start the spiral where Lisa stopped being a fun kid who would cooperate with Bart on his hijinks and instead became a naggy, pushy, pretentious downer.

It's funny how, at least when I used to actually WATCH the Simpsons, let's see.. up until 13 years ago.. Lisa was always everyone's least favorite character, yet the Lisa-centric episodes (Lisa Needs Braces, the one where she tries to change her look, Malibu Stacy, etc.) are usually everyones' favorites.

I'm due for a Simpsons binge, but I can't remember too many episodes where Lisa would straight-up help or go along with Bart unless he really needed it, like the one where he breaks is leg or the one where they make their own Itchy and Scratchy.

People single out this episode for Lisa being a downer, which is weird because there's an entire episode revolving around that idea in the very first season. And another one in season three highlighting exactly how different she and Bart are. Lisa was only Bart's accomplice in the Ullman shorts; when the show itself began, one of the first things the writers did was give her an opposite personality to Bart's, because in her original personality she was just redundant. The vegetarian episode has her acting like she always has; I think people single it out because Lisa never eats meat again after this ep, so people mentally categorize it as some kind of huge turning point, which it wasn't (the only difference it makes in 90% of episodes is that the ill-defined mush she eats during dinner scenes is now green instead of brown.)

I can't support the idea that this episode "ruined" Lisa, considering that the very next Lisa episode is Summer of 4' 2'', which is the best Lisa episode, and arguably the best Simpsons episode, ever made.

And really, even in the current episodes, Lisa is a far less obnoxious person than Bart the selfish vandal or Homer the family-neglecting drunk.

Plus this episode ends with Lisa learning a valuable lesson about not judging people based on her own ideologies. She's a bitch to everyone at the BBBQ and ruins the party, but luckily finds Paul and Linda living upstairs from Apu.. how come sporadic cameos like that used to be funny and now they seem so forced?

I think I was in 7th grade or something when this episode came out, when I was toying with becoming vegetarian because it was a cool thing to do. I had a similar experience at a petting zoo actually where I pet a cow and the cow licked me.. anyway I pretty much equated "I'm not going to eat meat at the dinner table" with "hey mom and dad guess what I'm running away from home."

Oh yeah and I've been openly vegan ever since, even though my father-in-law was a butcher.

EvilHomer - 2014-04-28

*I* liked Lisa. She wasn't my favorite character, but I was about her age when the show first came out, and I could always identify with her more than any other character, except perhaps for Moe.

I think of the Mane Five, Marge was my least favorite character.

EvilHomer - 2014-04-28

I was going to say that I've never heard anyone say this episode was a low point for Lisa, but now that I think about it, this may have been the episode where I stopped marking for Lisa as much, and turned more towards Bart, Nelson (who I'd warmed up to a couple years prior, thanks to "Nuke The Whales"), and Milhouse for my peer-group fanning needs.

I didn't stop liking her character, but I was proud of being a meat-eater, and I think I may have resented my mother's vegetarian New Age douchebag friends.

Xenocide - 2014-04-28

My feeling has always been that Lisa is the most important character on the show. She's not usually allowed to be the focus, but even when she's not, she's either helping drive a plotline or underscoring the other characters' quirks with her relative sanity. She's the one who throws everyone else into contrast and reminds us what a messed up yet disturbingly familiar place Springfield is. Lisa is one of the primary factors that kept the Simpsons from sliding into mindless, Family Guy-level joke-afer-joke idiocy for its first ten years.

Quad9Damage - 2014-04-29

Agreed, on all points. Could still do without any scene of Lisa singing, though.

Riskbreaker - 2014-04-29

Too bad the show sucks these days and should die a quick death already.

oddeye - 2014-04-29

Jesus Christ, it's just a stupid kids cartoon for fucks sake.
