I like the angle they took with the in-universe show, combining ponies with 80's sci-fi/fantasy action shows like He-Man and Thundercats.

infinite zest - 2014-04-12

I think the new MLP universe kind of ties in with 80s tropes like Thundercats and He-Man. Correct me if I'm wrong: I've never seen an episode, but it sure seems a hell of a lot more liberating than the 80s cartoon, which really made it look like My Little Ponies sit around and comb each others' hair all day, while the boys get to play with GI Joes and He-Mens.

Nominal - 2014-04-13

He-man had to Greco-Roman wrestle with guys named Fisto every episode.

I think the ponies got the better deal.

The New Meat - 2014-04-13

Have you guys actually seen the 80s MLP, where the ponies had crazy psychedelic adventures fighting giant flower monsters, shadow-stealing cloud demons, and penguin dictators that shoot ice lasers out of their eyes?

The new MLP meanwhile is a bunch of horses talking about sharing and feelings.

EvilHomer - 2014-04-13

Excuse me, the new MLP has ponies fighting chimera, Graboids, and Aztec death gods with ferocious house cat henchmen. They rarely dwell on their feelings (although they're not afraid to show them, when appropriate) and the ponies don't talk about sharing, because they already know that sharing is a nice thing to do. The show has a very light touch when it comes to having messages; it does not preach, but rather lets it's lessons emerge organically over the course of the ponies' adventures.

Old MLP may have had a few exciting moments, but the vast majority of it was just a bunch of vapid, nondescript girly-girls playing with bubbles and fussing over their hair. Find me some good episodes of TOS and prove me wrong.

EvilHomer - 2014-04-13

In fact, the only instance I can think of where one of the FiM ponies actually *talked* about sharing was when Pinkie Pie tried to defuse the imminent race war between the buffalo and the settler ponies. She sang a completely condescending song about Sharing, which would have fit right in with TOS... and without giving away too many spoilers, it actually made the situation WORSE.

While the buffalo and settler ponies did eventually come to understand the value of sharing, it was a lesson hard-learned, as it always is in real life.

Kid Fenris - 2014-04-13

The '80s My Little Pony was all over the place. One episode would be about the ponies raising a big lost puppy. The next would be about an ancient ram-wizard warlord who kidnapped unicorns with his netherworld fortress. Heck, the original My Little Pony special has a hellish centaur king who turns ponies into giant mutant dragons.

Of course, everything wrapped up cute. There might be a huge golem dog who petrified ponies into statues frozen in pure terror, but he'd be mollified by a magical crystal of feelings.

Kid Fenris - 2014-04-13

That said, I will put Wind Whistler up against any current-series pony.

Xenocide - 2014-04-13

If anything, the buffalo episode was a shot at the "let's resolve everything with a song about sharing" style of writing that people expect from MLP. In that episode, a song about sharing CAUSES A WAR.

Shoebox Joe - 2014-04-13

The thing is, the MLP movie I saw with the Satan centaur was pretty dry with details. There was no pacing to really let any of the situations be anything other than just showing what/who the characters are and the only one that seemed to be immediately enjoyable was an awkward wizard/comic relief character. Kind of sad when all the characters meant to push the story forward get out shined by a passing turd. It was really cool I've never really seen any other episodes/movies of the previous generation to really compare it, but I wouldn't be surprised if they were horribly condescending just due to marketing having their say in what works and what doesn't.

The new MLP is actually pretty awesome with the more relevant thoughts it has. You don't have to understand people to be friends with them (though typing that out seems a bet "eh" to me.) Your friends are the ones who best represent you as a person, etc.

The one that really sticks out to me has to be Dragon Quest. A very subtle bit of gender roles considering all of the dragons were boys and all of the ponies were girls (Note: They do have a sense of continuity, but they're pushed to make the series stand alone episodes.)

The New Meat - 2014-04-13

"Excuse me, the new MLP has ponies fighting chimera, Graboids, and Aztec death gods with ferocious house cat henchmen. "

Why the hell are graboids in this show? Oh, right, I forgot, gotta pander to Internet manbabies.

"Old MLP may have had a few exciting moments, but the vast majority of it was just a bunch of vapid, nondescript girly-girls playing with bubbles and fussing over their hair."

Typical brony response to dismiss 80s MLP because it's just FOR GIRLS. Oh I'm sorry, I guess it's not a manly show for manly men like this new primary color Flash bullshit.

"Find me some good episodes of TOS and prove me wrong."

This demand makes no sense because the only possible response is ALL OF THEM.

"In fact, the only instance I can think of where one of the FiM ponies actually *talked* about sharing was when Pinkie Pie tried to defuse the imminent race war between the buffalo and the settler ponies. She sang a completely condescending song about Sharing, which would have fit right in with TOS... and without giving away too many spoilers, it actually made the situation WORSE."

Please don't give away the secret twist ending in a children's cartoon.

EvilHomer - 2014-04-13

TOS IS just for girls, though. And not even that, it's just for girly-girls; smart girls, like Twilight Sparkle, and tomboys, like Rainbow and AJ, get left out in the cold. Again, prove me wrong, if you can.

FiM is all-inclusive, and has stuff for fans of any gender orientation. That's not a bad thing.

Xenocide - 2014-04-13

THANKS FOR STOPPING BY, JOHNNY MATURITY.

The New Meat - 2014-04-13

"TOS IS just for girls, though. And not even that, it's just for girly-girls; smart girls, like Twilight Sparkle, and tomboys, like Rainbow and AJ, get left out in the cold. Again, prove me wrong, if you can."

No shit it was a show for girls. Apparently it's now a bad thing for a show to cater to girls. And apparently being overtly feminine and being smart are now mutually exclusive.

BiggerJ - 2014-04-13

What have I done. WHAT HAVE I DONE.

oddeye - 2014-04-13

You wanted this to happen, J, don't pretend that you didn't.

Shoebox Joe - 2014-04-13

What are you even doing, The New Meat? You fell right into BiggerJ's hands.

The New Meat - 2014-04-13

While I'm on the subject, Nelvana Carebears are better than Dic.

WELL THEY WERE

infinite zest - 2014-04-12

I haven't seen enough of this show as I should have. I don't have a TV so I can't be part of the Neilsen thing, if they still do that, but it's good like early Simpsons was good, and I love every episode of it I catch.

Ironically, the related "brady bunch" 9 videos surrounding it at the end are all either Family Guy or American Dad :(

StanleyPain - 2014-04-12

BB is pretty consistently good, much more so than most other network TV crap.

sasazuka - 2014-04-13

The problem is that FOX moved BOB'S BURGERS to 7pm, when hardly anyone's watching television, because of COSMOS.

I don't want to decry Seth Macfarlane's vanity project, I certainly believe the promotion of scientific literacy is laudable (even if it's up against some pretty tough competition in the form of GAME OF THRONES and, before that, THE WALKING DEAD), but I have to admit I find myself resenting the COSMOS reboot a bit because of the severe ratings damage that the rejigging of Fox's Sunday night schedule is doing to BOB'S BURGERS, which has had an absolutely terrific run of new episodes since coming back from the long February hiatus that are only attracting a single ratings point or less of viewers in the key 18-49 demogaphic because it's on too frigging early. And the worst part is that COSMOS isn't even in BOB'S BURGERS' former timeslot, but Fox moved FAMILY GUY to 8:30 because of COSMOS.

I rather wish that Fox would have put BOB'S BURGERS on hiatus for the duration of COSMOS's run and then have shown them as summer originals instead.

sasazuka - 2014-04-13

^ "Demographic", not "demogaphic", sorry.

fedex - 2014-04-13

are you the show runner or something?

sasazuka - 2014-04-13

No, I'm just the show-watcher-who-doesn't-want-it-to-get-cancelled.

Although, IIRC, I think BOB'S BURGERS was actually renewed for a fifth season before the fourth season even started airing, so there are at least a few episodes already in the can for next season by now regardless of the 7pm-addled-ratings.

BiggerJ - 2014-04-13

I wonder if the next season will contain a jab at Cosmos. It probably wouldn't involve Neil Degrasse Tyson's horrible death, of course; this isn't South Park.

sasazuka - 2014-04-13

I think they're only showing the first minute of the episode in this preview, but the promotional art shows adult men in horse costumes so you'll be getting the full pseudo-Brony experience (that they can show on television, but I wouldn't be surprised if they at least throw an allusion to clopping in there).

RedHood - 2014-04-13

I really don't like this show. I tried. I really fucking tried. Everyone I know loves it but I just can't. I feel like after every joke I can hear John Roberts voicing the mom character in my head going "Look we made a funny, see how we made a funny?" Anyway while I don't watch it, don't like it; I hope it is still around so you jerkies can. Here is 5...now no more clips for a while ok?

Nominal - 2014-04-13

I'm here to hug you in your support group, buddy.

In related note of being embarrassed for not being into a cartoon, Netflix just got season 2 of Adventure Time and....it's really not that great. Season 1 had me constantly giggling at all the clever stuff it was crammed with while managing to keep it an innocent TV-Y7 kid's show.

Season 2 seems like it's replaced all the clever stuff with inappropriate stuff like it's trying to be the next Ren & Stimpy. Every single episode so far is character being bombarded with snot, scrunching up their faces in pain and/or being tortured via electrocution. If I had a kid under 7 I don't think I'd even let them watch it anymore.

Plus it'd be one thing if it still managed to be funny, but it's just...not.

I'm sad. Hug me back, RedHood.

EvilHomer - 2014-04-13

You wouldn't let your kid watch Ren & Stimpy?!

EvilHomer - 2014-04-13

I'm sorry, I know you're not suppose to be judgmental in a support group, but... jesus, man. Kids love snot and electrocution. Depriving them of the natural outlet for their grossness is practically child abuse.

Nominal - 2014-04-13

Ok first off the grown man who's still learning basic little girl toddler social interaction lessons from a cartoon pony show can't criticize anyone.

The grossout stuff is in place of anything funny and clever. It used to be a clever show about a kid's adventure in magical realism. Now it's barely better than a Garbage Pail kids card. They can't think of jokes or gags so they just cut to closeups of snot and drool.

And it's not Loony Toons electrocution, it's extended torture scene electrocution.

It's just such a huge dip in quality from the first season, like the show got taken over by someone who missed the point. I'm talking the difference between season 1 Twin Peaks and season 2 Twin Peaks.

EvilHomer - 2014-04-13

You know, Nominal, maybe the reason you can't stomach Adventure Time anymore is because, unlike MLP, it actually IS for kids? I hate to play the grown-up card, for obvious reasons, but it never fails to amaze me just how un-self-aware certain Adventure Time fans can be.

My Little Pony is a show for all ages, one that can be watched by kids or adults, in a family unit or individually. This is by design. This is why the writers carefully avoid "kid subjects", like school, boogers, or being disrespectful towards adults.

Adventure Time is a show for children. Full stop. If potty humor and childish sadism makes your monocle pop... well, perhaps you should stop watching a show that was and always has been meant solely for boys under the age of ten?

I don't look down on you for watching Adventure Time, Nominal. I can't get into Adventure Time myself, but I know a lot of adults like it, so there's clearly something there that resonates with a small minority of people well outside the show's intended age range. But it's also pretty obvious that you're projecting, projecting like your life depends on it, and I would suggest that you look at yourself before passing judgement on anyone else.

The New Meat - 2014-04-14

This whole time I thought Evilhomer was an actual brony, so now imagine my surprise to find out it's actually all been an elaborate troll. Boy is my face red!

EvilHomer - 2014-04-13

Alright, alright, fine, I'll watch it. It's been sitting in my Netflix cue for ages, and now that I'm finally finished with the Clone Wars, I guess I can give it a shot.

Do they stream current episodes anywhere, or is Bob's Bronies something I'll need eztv for?

NancyDrewFan123 - 2014-04-13

The most recent episodes usually go up on Hulu the next day. I don't know how far back it goes, though.

Shoebox Joe - 2014-04-13

Usually the five most recent episodes.

oddeye - 2014-04-13

This looks like a combination of King of the Hill and Family Guy, two of the shitest cartoons ever made. Wish it was more like that Home Movies or whatever, that was alright.

NancyDrewFan123 - 2014-04-13

lol

EvilHomer - 2014-04-13

You're really working this troll angle, Mr Eye. But interestingly enough, it's made by one of the producers from King of the Hill, Jim Dauterive (the guy Bill was named after).

Wish I had of known that before; it's pretty good so far.

oddeye - 2014-04-13

So I am a troll by pointing out that it looks like King of the Hill when it's made by one of the producers of King of the Hill? How does that work? I am legitimately clueless as to your reasoning.

EvilHomer - 2014-04-13

It's OK. I'm not going to pressure you to break kayfabe. I enjoy new outrageous Oddeye, who compares KotH to Family Guy while praising Home Movies; like you said, sometimes trolling is art!

sasazuka - 2014-04-13

I have no issue with people not liking BOB'S BURGERS, but, to be clear, any comparison to FAMILY GUY is invalid. BOB'S BURGERS doesn't do cutaway gags, BOB'S BURGERS episodes have a cohesive narrative and all comedy is organic to that narrative, and it takes place in an exaggerated cartoon version of the real world where nothing too impossible in reality happens (although that mechanical shark episode stretched believability a lot). A lot of implausible stuff that would probably be easily BUSTED on MYTHBUSTERS, but nothing outright impossible.

Xenocide - 2014-04-13

I am an unabashed PoeTV Walking Embarrassment so I will freely admit to being a fan of My Little Pony. But I totally understand and respect if you don't care for the show or have no interest in trying it out.

But not liking Bob's Burgers is fucking unacceptable. I'll kidnap your dog and replace him with an aroused goat.

Shoebox Joe - 2014-04-13

Oddeye wasn't comparing KoTH to Family Guy. But it really perplexes me why he can find those two terrible and only mildly likes Home Movies.

Are you on some sort of bender, Oddeye? Seriously, god damn. Either find some hole to start working on something or just shut up you angry, angry mofo.

I like Bob's Burgers. I warmed up to it, but I've come to this point where I'm just tired of being entertained and tired of entertainment in general.

I literally checked out Kurt Vonnegut's "Galapagos" but never even picked it up before I had to return it. I fucking love Vonnegut when I've gotten tired of everything irrelevant, yet I just couldn't get myself to open to a page one despite how much I've been in the mood for Vonnegut.

So yeah, what I'm saying is, maybe Oddeye needs a break. Maybe he needs to find something to bring to the world that could be more than characters shooting their mouths off and getting into odd situations. It just might be the time to do it.

sasazuka - 2014-04-13

Speaking of warming up to BOB'S BURGERS, it happened with me. I wasn't too impressed with the first couple of episodes and really only started liking the show with the episode when Bob started painting buttholes on Gail's animal butt paintings while Linda had that DUMBO Pink Elephant dream parody.

For me, it was probably just a combination of needing a few episodes to get used to the style of comedy and also that I don't think the episodes they started with were the strongest.

EvilHomer - 2014-04-13

I just finished the fourth episode of BB, and I really like it so far. I was worried it was going to be just another cheap edgy sitcom, but the delivery and the timing make it. Louise made me choke on my lunch, twice, and the other characters seem to have a nice chemistry.

The guy who does Bob, he also does the voice of the fat movie store kid from Family Guy, right?

Shoebox Joe - 2014-04-13

Yeah, that guy. He also does the badminton Coach from House Shorts. I found that out through one of the storyboard artists for The Equestranauts. Her name is Mibsy I think.

EvilHomer - 2014-04-13

Oh wow, OK, I'm in the middle of the first season's Bed and Breakfast episode. There's a guy's beating up a room full of furries, AND there's a portrait on the wall of the eldest daughter with Pinkie Pie. That's awesome.

EvilHomer - 2014-04-13

Are there many MLP references? I know the eldest daughter is supposed to be obsessed with horses, and that's CLEARLY Pinkie Pie in the picture.

oddeye - 2014-04-13

I am working on a video, Shoebox. About a great many things. No one will watch it and the unfortunate few that do will immediately forget it but compulsions and compulsions.

Shoebox Joe - 2014-04-13

Eh, don't go that way oddeye, even if you're being humorous. I wouldn't mind seeing what you got.

Shoebox Joe - 2014-04-13

Evilhomer: Not that I know of. I wouldn't be surprised if they had Tina get into the cloppers with all of her hormonally enraged awkward sex fantasies.

Xenocide - 2014-04-13

Every time Fox gets a new animated show that isn't from Seth McFarlane and survives for more than a season, Fox rewards its success by banishing it to die a slow death in the 7PM Sunday slot. Where, for half the season, it will get pre-empted by football in most of the country anyway.

They did this to Futurama and King of the Hill, which ended up killing them both. What did Bob's Burgers do to piss them off? Not enough rape jokes?

Nominal - 2014-04-13

Kinda like Firefly getting strangled in the crib while Lexx gets multiple seasons.

oddeye - 2014-04-13

Firefly was a non-animated show that was cancelled due to it's monumental shittiness. It was on Fox.
Lexx was a shit show of undetermined shitiness because I haven't passed judgement on it yet. It was on sci-fi and channel 5 which are 2 low budget shit magnets.

Taking all this into account, how then does the swift and just cancellation of Firefly correlate with the renewal of Lexx for a few seasons on (a) completely different network(s)?
All of this, and more, you imply in your post Nominal. If that even is your real name, coward.

BiggerJ - 2014-04-14

They were moved because of Cosmos. Apparently it'll be back in its old slot next season. Be patient. If it isn't, THEN you can set Fox's building on fire.

BiggerJ - 2014-04-14

*building

Apparently Fox isn't based in a single monolithic pure-black monument to its own unspeakable power.

Jet Bin Fever - 2014-04-14

Oh god, look at all those comments. I don't think I can read all those fucking comments.

Gmork - 2014-04-14

2 birds 1 stone

Shoebox Joe - 2014-04-14
