I skate and I'm not very good at it- it's just a fun mode of transportation for me- my friends who are much better than myself (some of which are sponsored) hate nothing more than the Tonyhawkinization (if that's a word and it's not) of modern skate culture, which is exactly what happened back in the 80s with Gleam the Cube, so it's happened twice in the same way, ironically with the same posterboy, only the 80s had somewhat better music.

It's a high production romance/intrigue-at-court drama. At least it's aimed at adults, albeit retarded, undersexed adults with no taste. It has soft-core porn of the faintest erotic value and the odd awkward sword fight. Also some boring, transparent plot about a white foreigner freeing some brown slaves. Wow, how subtle! So highbrow.

It is shit. You could do a lot worse, like wrestling or Walking Dead but ultimately it is shit.

It's caught in a limbo between entertaining intentional trash like True Blood, and trying to be profound intrigue full of complex plots and meaningful monologues for dummies.

To me, the series ended at the end of season 3. Shut it off forever, knowing that there would never be a more perfect ending.

I probably would've started watching it from the beginning if I knew what it was (I actually thought it was a historical drama, somehow not seeing ANY videos throughout the first season) and when everyone was going apeshit on Facebook with "OMG RED WEDDING OMG" I watched that clip, which at least spoiled a lot of things up to that point, so I never invested.

I love the LotR movies (not the Hobbit ones) but I think the market's a little saturated with fantasy stuff right now, even though Game of Thrones is probably the best of the bunch, I'd rather watch stuff like True Detective if it's live action. If I want a great fantasy drama, I'll stick with Attack on Titan.

True Detective started slow and steadily became brilliant. No denying that, it was REALLY good.

Then after a key event the show turned into Nancy Drew with two middle aged bromosexuals. The case is then cracked in the most retarded manner possible, rendering pretty much the entire series before it a huge and incompetent waste of time. Subsequently ends on an extremely disappointing note.

Overall grade: C+

I'd rate "True Detective" more favorably, because I think its failing was in not prepping the audience for the type of conclusion they were building towards. People have come to expect SHOCKING TWIST ENDINGS THAT WILL BLOW YOUR FREAKIN MIND on mysterious suspenseful cop shows, but the ending they were going for here was closer to the "Law and Order" style of "okay we've done the police work and picked a suspect, now to bust him".

The green ears and spaghetti face were weak clues too. And, I didn't like how the Yellow King's "castle" was apparently wired up with cameras and loudspeakers.

That's all my major complaints. All in all, I do not feel that my eight hours were wasted.

I just caught up a couple weeks ago, and I'd say yeah, with the caveat that you're willing to put the time in. It's not something you can watch while waiting for pasta to boil. There's tons of characters, many of whom look really similar, and it's often hard to tell who's going to be a bit player and who's going to become the focal point of the story. I had to rewatch several episodes because an important plot point hinged on a character I'd dismissed as "Bearded Man #45781".

That said, it's incredibly rewarding if you do follow it. The plot is complex but organic, and the show very rarely takes the sort of narrative shortcuts you'd expect; the story unfolds with the chaos of actual history, and it's nice to have your intelligence respected. Also, the characters, even the repulsive ones, are charismatic and well-drawn. For all the flack George RR Martin gets, he's brilliant at inducing empathy with someone we've known for five minutes. Everyone has their own value systems and voices. Even during the slowest parts, there's usually someone interesting or likable you can focus on.

If you're the sort of person who watches shows for the "HOLY SHIT" payoffs, Game of Thrones definitely has that. The most recent season in particular is full of them. I think that's a huge part of the appeal. Every character and every plot thread is fair game. There are so many shocking acts of violence and thrilling plot twists I'd recommend at least watching the best moments online, even if you don't commit to watching the entire series.
