Good night, sweet prince.

OxygenThief - 2014-03-20

He is going to be so pissed when he is greeted in the afterlife by Freddie Mercury and all his cats.

GOD HATES GOD

SteamPoweredKleenex - 2014-03-20

"When the time comes, I will leave my old body. My new body will be a part of God."

I rather hope it's a part involved in defecation. Maybe an anal hair follicle on Gawd's bum?

Caminante Nocturno - 2014-03-20

Good.

Azmo23 - 2014-03-20

the WBC doesn't have funerals, but he was supposedly excommunicated so there may be picketing yet

Sanest Man Alive - 2014-03-20

He was excommunicated for not being a big enough asshole. No, really.

I don't think WBC will be losing steam just because Papa Jupe's gone.

oddeye - 2014-03-20

Not happiness but certainly relief.

Nominal - 2014-03-20

First day of sunny warm spring where I am. Coincidence?

Nikon - 2014-03-20

Hope they crank the thermostat in Hell for this guy.

Jet Bin Fever - 2014-03-20

Sadly, there are still members of his family that haven't been deprogrammed yet, so there is still time until the world is rid of their terrible church.

Pillager - 2014-03-20

My mind boggles at the amount of urine the Kansas aquifers will have to accommodate.

takewithfood - 2014-03-20

What a miserable, shitty life.

Born in the RSR - 2014-03-20

He was a lawyer fighting for equality during the Civil Rights movement, he subsequently had a mental breakdown or something. So, ups and downs on shittyness.

CIWB - 2014-03-20

Wasn't the whole civil rights lawyer schtick just some way to earn money from lawsuits? I thought I remember reading an article quoting him saying how happy he was getting money "from all those niggers", or something along those lines.

Binro the Heretic - 2014-03-20

Well, it's a start, I guess.

cognitivedissonance - 2014-03-20

He spent his entire life angling for a martyrdom, and was denied that nominal honor.

Spaceman Africa - 2014-03-20

Damn I was expecting Pat Robertson to go first.

Rodents of Unusual Size - 2014-03-20

Well these things happen in threes, deaths of famous people roughly in the same industry. So here's hoping.

Born in the RSR - 2014-03-20

Can't find anything negative about his civil rights days, but i did find that Phelps sued Ronald Reagan over Reagan's appointment of a U.S. ambassador to the Vatican, alleging this violated separation of church and state.

Born in the RSR - 2014-03-20

sorry, that was meant as a reply for CIWB.

SolRo - 2014-03-20

GLAD he's gone!

il fiore bel - 2014-03-20

ding dong, the closeted buttfucker of a queerhater is dead

And while gay people everywhere (well, almost) are getting married and continue to get married and spread the love, he will soon be forgotten, obscured by all the things he tried to demonize. The sooner the better. Thank even a faghating god there will be no funeral, so that this is so.

Cena_mark - 2014-03-20

Fred Phelps missed his true calling as a heel manager in professional wrestling. He was charismatic and had a great talent in drawing heat.

EvilHomer - 2014-03-20

Fred was Best Troll.

Cena_mark - 2014-03-20

If he went into wrestling instead. He'd have put over monster heels with no mic skills. Even The Great Khali would have even been half way interesting with Fiery Fred Phelps in his corner.

EvilHomer - 2014-03-20

Yeah, it's a shame Vince never reached out to him. And his granddaughter Grace would have made a great valet!

Sexy Duck Cop - 2014-03-20

It's spectacular that people gave him all the attention he craved, even when it was patently obvious literally zero people on the planet took him seriously as anything but a philosophical experiment on the limitations of free speech.

EvilHomer - 2014-03-21

People took him seriously because, as Cena says, he was obscenely good at what he did. I found him extremely funny, like an evil Kaufman or Borat on a grand scale, so it was hard to ever truly get mad at him. And yeah, he was a very important test case for free speech, perhaps *the* most important test case in recent memory. Freedom of speech is a meaningless concept unless the speech being put to question is so unpopular, with the masses and with the state, that it actually NEEDS protection. I'm glad that, legally speaking, Fred consistently won his battles, even if socially speaking it's becoming depressingly apparent that people are forgetting the true cost and value of free speech.

(assuming society at large has EVER had a true appreciation for freedom of speech; it's entirely possible that liberalism has never been the default state of society, and has always been more or less a legalistic imposition by the wiser heads on top.)

As for why he got attention, we've got to remember that most of Fred's infamy was a direct result of the media's constant coverage of him; they covered him, I think, because he was *useful*. Fred was a ready-made pantomime villain. He was easy to despise, which got eyes glued to the TV, and he represented an extreme version of the sort of people most media outlets of the time were waging an ideological war against, which was handy for the narrative. Most of all, his appeal was universal. He could be hated by liberals, for his shocking social and religious views, he could be hated by conservatives, for his anti-Americanism and harrassment of soldiers, hell he could even be hated by fellow Fundies, for declaring that precisely everyone was going to hell 'cept for him and his family (some of his funniest work was directed against Baptists and Evangelicals!)

Fred was a straw man twirling a black cape, perfectly cast for our Two Minutes Hate, so is it really any wonder that people gave him the attention he craved, far beyond the attention his two-family fringe group actually warranted?

gambol - 2014-03-21
